Boeing YL-15 - Defying Physics

Boeing built two XL-15s as proof of concept prototypes and then 10 YL-15s for evaluation as they competed for the U.S. Army Air Forces (which quickly became the U.S. Air Force) contract for a new L-bird, a liaison aircraft. Boeing ultimately lost the contract to Cessna who had developed the L-19 Bird Dog. The L-15, the last manned piston-powered airplane Boeing ever built, never went into production.

(1) Beautiful plane. It seems to deliver lots of joy flying it. (2) Change the video's title. It dishonors the presentation.

The video said nothing about its performance. What was its intended purpose? What is its max. speed? What is it's min. air speed? Max. climb rate? Ceiling altitude? What is its min. takeoff distance at 0 MPH wind? What is its min. landing distance at 0 mph wind? What is its fuel consumption? Max. range?

yeah immediately had the same thought about the crappy wording. Obviously it's not defying physics, especially if it flies decently, which it probably does.

I was waiting for him to explain what it was designed for. Obviously some sort of observation because of the rear facing seat but, given it's design it was intended for a very specific job but what?

I believe he addressed that by simply saying it was hard to get used to the low numbers, meaning stall speed, take off & landing speeds. It's an expression, nothing gets away with physics.

thisnplane looks a bit like the fieseler storch and this plane (a smal reconisance craft) was able to fly backwards (it had such a slow stall speed that if you fly against winds that are faster than that speed and stop the engines it would fly backwards.

Irobert1115HD Yes, and that particular feat of being able to fly backwards, was the same for the Antonov An-2 in certain conditions, if memory serves me correctly... Shame though didn't get to see the STOL performance, or flying backwards😉

I believe the word is clickbait, all video's have it. Now does it look like it would fly, it looks like it tried to fly and failed, of course that's on the ground. In the air it is a beautiful example of something fulfilling 100% of it's design, another example would be the A10. You and your father have done an amazing job and deserve 1000 times the credit these trolls are giving you. keep up the good work.

Dan Cutler You don't know what a troll is. Trolls are abusive and bully people just to get a reaction, often obscene and threatening violence. Mentioning the title does not describe the content is the mildest form of criticism possible. The title is misleading people into clicking on the video and the poster gets MONEY when that happens. It's not a "little bit misleading" it is nothing BUT misleading. The title is clickbait (misleading or misrepresenting the content of the video to get more views) and is a violation of KZfaq's Terms of Service and the people commenting on that fact are like reporting that someone is stealing from their employer. They are not wrong, defying physics is EXACTLY what it doesn't do. It, in fact, DAN, does not even mention physics except to say it takes off quickly, which only shows the nice man who restored the cool airplane knows NOTHING about physics. You are defending a criminal, great job dude!!!!!! If the title actually stated what was in the video, it would get thousands of more views, for example, One of 12 Rare Aircraft That You Have Never Seen Before! would get people that WANT to see the plane, instead of doubters who reluctantly click on the possibility of physics being defied (like quantum particles do) so ease up there buddy.

It's not the last piston-powered manned aircraft Boeing ever built, Boeing wrapped up the (K)C-97 line 10 years after the YL-15 was cancelled and the the B-50 was just entering production as the YL-15 was cancelled. The Boeing Stratocruiser first flew only 5 days before the YL-15 and would be produced until 1950. Also the L-19 was purchased by the US Army in its first fixed wing buy after the USAF became independent, the contract the YL-15 was designed for was an earlier USAAF contract from 1946. The Army did evaluate the YL-15 against the L-19, but that was a later procurement and Boeing was offering it's already developed aircraft against a new Cessna aircraft.

I'm just guessing but I'd think Boeing discontinued it because it only carried one man, was slow and had limited range, so somebody probably said- "Hey we don't need to build so small, we might just as well build something a little bigger to carry an observer crewman, has a higher speed and is longer-ranged."
