Philadelphia Eagles fans have a reputation for being somewhat ruthless and brutal if a player is underperforming. But did you ever hear the story of the time they booed a player so badly that he quit the team for a bit, and drove down to North Carolina just to escape? Well, in 1967, after a loss to the Baltimore Colts, that's exactly what cornerback Aaron Martin did

I caught the Fox network catching the sentiment of one Philadelphia Eagles fan in their loss to Arizona last season. The Eagles fan yelled "What the H-E-L-L are you doing?" so loud that the audio picked it up.

I loved Cross for his sideline reporting--among the very best. He was bright and dedicated. I never saw him play until some recent clips. In one clip, he was playing for the Rams and Carroll Dale caught a wide open pass then headed up the sideline with Cross a few yards toward the middle and about four yards back. I thought Dale would score easily but Irv ran him down. That was impressive.

This is very similar to what happened to the legendary Diego Maradona when he first joined Napoli back in 1984. Like Eagles fans, Napoli fans have a reputation for being the most ruthless fans in all of Italian soccer (heck they even assaulted their own players & coach & attempted to burn the training facility down following a loss in 1992) & Maradona knew what he was getting into because he had played for Boca Juniors in Argentina whose fans have a similar reputation. However in his first home game with Napoli vs Hellas Verona which ended in a 0-0 draw, Maradona played terribly & got booed mercilessly by the Napoli fans some of whom made it personal with Maradona by insulting his mother. Maradona was so upset after the match that he flew to Athens Greece to get away for a few days because he didn't want to deal with the media or the Napoli fans. This turned out to be a good idea as Maradona ended up being the top scorer for the club that season & justified the world record fee at the time Napoli paid for him to Barcelona. Even though Napoli finished 8th that season, the club began to build the team around Maradona & it paid off in 1987 when they won Serie A for the first time.

If you're talking about the snowballs at Santa incident, no it wasn't. The Santa that was supposed to have been in the halftime show for that game didn't show up because there was a blizzard the night before and he didn't they were going to have the parade so when halftime came and no Santa, one of the Eagles officials saw a guy in the crowd wearing an old ratty Santa suit and recruited him to fill in. When the fans saw this poor schlub in an old beat up Santa suit they thought it was just another example of the Eagles being cheap and they responded accordingly.

I agree, Philly fans are ruthless. Yes I’m an eagles fan but I do my best to try not act like other eagles fans. But I’ll say this, I find it hilarious how other nfl fanbases have such a self righteous attitude about themselves when in their own history they did things that were at the same level of awfulness or worse than what eagles fans have done. Look in the mirror nfl fanbases. You’re not innocent.

I agree, I do notice that Philly gets the reputation but I see toxic behavior from every fan base. I also have noticed that when Philly embraces you they REALLY embrace you. You mentioned Agholor, you may have meant Jalen Reagor. Agholor had a great season for us and balled out in the Super Bowl. Then he forgot how to catch. Even though no one was sad to see him go, at least we look back on 2017 with some degree of fondness. Reagor on the other hand was hands down a Dumb Decision from draft day and got worse from there. He was terrible in almost every way for Philly until we traded him two years later to Minnesota. Incidentally Minn had the next pick after Reagor, and to rub salt in it, they took Justin Jefferson. Thats why Reagor belongs on the list of hated Philly WR busts and Agholor may not.

One thing that people either forget or don't know about the snowballs at Santa game was that it was a sellout and considering it was a, at the time, 2-11 team with nothing to play for and who just blew the chance at the #1 pick in the draft on a day after a nasty snowstorm and the weather was cold, wet, and miserable for the game to be a sellout is a testament to the fans. Now IMO Eagle fans are dicks but I'll never question their passion and loyalty.
