If you could hear me now... snapping my fingers and toes in agreeance. The ear is the glue that holds everything together: technique, theory, repertoire... everything. Even if I don't talk about it as much these days, I still train my ear every damn day. Thing is, ear training is a DEEP subject. Deeper than interval recognition. Deeper than note recognition. Ear training gives you the ability to translate all the music you hear in your head onto the instrument. Music is more than notes. Ear training goes as deep as the study of music itself because ya gotta hear it and sing it to really own it.
