I mean... You can definitely look at it this way. Or it was just a funny joke. Audience matters a LOT when someone is doing a public speech/presentation - including comedy. I don't think you will like it, but you should try watching "comedians in cars getting coffee". The topic of "offensive" jokes comes up a few times and the comedians all make some very good points on it in a much better way than I can. Ultimately, I think it's something along the lines of "why watch comedy if you're just gonna get offended?". I admit - I have gotten offended at a few jokes before, but after 2 seconds of thought realised that my offense and feelings are not the comedian's problem. They are mine. We all have things we are extra sensitive about due to life experience, but I think there is something admirable about being able to find humour in almost everything. I also think that humor and activism can co-exist. Time, place, and audience are important factors in determining which approach a person takes.

In regards to the chap estranged from his sister, growing up my mother had fairly severe mental health issues that had my sister suicidal and a lot of hatred built at times because of what we went through with her but I always understood even from a fairly young age that my mum couldn't help the problems she had. I worked hard to maintain my love for my mum because she virtually alienated everyone else in her life, as time has gone on she improved for various reasons which doesn't always happen admittedly but she has managed to have relationships with my sister and her grand children and great grandchildren that I could never have believed possible. I'm not saying you should forgive her but a lot of time has passed and holding on to anger and pain for something from the past that stops you experiencing the joy of being an uncle seems such a shame. I sincerely hope you find a way to connect with your family again.

I gotta say, my first ex said pretty much the same thing to me about not feeling paid attention to enough. He made me choose between him and my goals when I was going through a rough time with health to boot. But I did not hear about any of these 'time' complaints until he was breaking up with me. Now I am with a partner who clearly communicates his needs and respects my time and needs. I'm not a relationship expert by any means but it feels like any breakdown in communication needs to be addressed. Just had to write my two cents. It did not sit well with me in a similar way to Jenna, because I've been that girlfriend. Some people need more attention in a relationship than others and if you truly love her, communicate with her and learn each other's love language. If it can't work because yall are incompatible its best to move on. Idk.

Actually, valleys do have floors. Caves do as well. As do tents. I'd propose that a floor is the bottom surface of an enclosed space (could be enclosed by a building, walls, fabric, hides, trees (trunks or canopy), rock, cliffs, man-made or natural, with or without a roof). Meadows don't have floors, as Rhett said, because they are open (not because they lack a canopy). However, if you were walking through the forest or in a valley, you wouldn't say "Put that on the floor," because when we speak of a valley floor or forest floor we are using the word 'floor' metaphorically, to paint a picture of the ground in a valley or forest in relation to the other parts of the valley or forest that enclose it.

I've always wondered why they don't make toothpaste containers in the style of deodorant sticks. Just a hard plastic shell with a screw thingy that pushes out all the toothpaste. So for the floor/ground one, i agree with inside vs. outside. If you are inside of a door, its the floor. Outside, the ground. If an Amazon driver throws your package on your porch, you'd probably say they threw it on the ground. If they opened your porch door and threw it inside, you'd probably say they threw it on the floor.

I always find that creating boundaries is hard bc of something just before (anxiety, fear, anger etc) and it always makes me feel better to think something along the lines of “the kids have to have had at least one similar experience that I did with their mom, maybe that’s why they’re reaching out?” it puts a nice deep breath in the situation.

To mike, thank you for sharing your story! Something very similar has happened in my family and is now repeating with my aunt and my dad who are siblings. I very much just appreciate you as a man for being open about talking about that and putting that conversation starter out there. Gave me a lot of respect for you and I hope you’re able to at least come to a good place with the niece and nephew. Even dealing with her for a short time will be worth it to see them and have a relationship with them. Family can be something very special when all parties respect each other and come from a place of love. It’s also okay to just be honest if you still can’t see her. Sometimes people do things that are unfixable.

I think it would be hard to approach the situation with the gf working a lot without being manipulative. Whether he means to or not, it's likely he'll make her feel guilty by bringing it up. If anything, I think he should just suggest that they do date night on her day off or things like that without bringing up that her working a lot bothers him. A lot of it is going to have to be a shift in expectations, but if he's really proud of her, I'm sure he can make it work. His wording was, as Jenna mentioned, a little questionable, and I do think this happens less with the roles reversed.

I'm having the same issue with my brother. He drinks a lot, insults when drunk, throws things, have been driving drunk and has seizures (mom used to have seizures with her Alzheimer so we believe he has it too) (the seizures). My only problem is that our house is half mine, half his, since my dad is 80 years old and mom passed away 4 years ago. So, since we live in Venezuela, is hard to find a house for each other and there's no other place to be, so I'm trying to convince him to sell because I refuse to take care of him while drinking, but he keeps saying that it was his mom's house, etc etc...

The wording in the last serious question gives me pause. Referring to someone as "not right in the head" is so. . .hurtful. What that person did was wrong and maybe they did that thing because they have some sort of mental illness but having a mental illness doesn't mean they are "wrong" in the head. What it does mean, in my opinion, is that the person with the illness did a wrong thing. The wording the caller uses suggests, to me, that they are upset with the wrongness of the person and not the wrongness of that person's action. I think that for the caller to move forward and connect with his other relatives - and set up those much needed boundaries to ensure that the relationship stays healthy - he will need to mentally make that shift: "wrong person" to "wrong action." That's not to say that he needs to forgive or accept what the person did. My two cents.

In regards to the estranged brother and sister, I think a lot of time has passed and maybe they need to sit down and talk. She could of gotten the help she needs or he doesn't know the situation as to why the daughter was upset with her father. It's possible that she struggled with mental health or there's more to it. Regardless, he was told by someone that his his niece and nephew want to be a part of his life so there's obviously a 3rd party involved that could help be the mediator. Start by going to practices or family gatherings when the children are present and go from there. It's very hard to give advice when there's no context.

In my opinion, we need common sense and integrity in our governing body. As it stands we are not going to go forward. We keep going left and right not forward. Politicians need to view their elected positions as a job. We need to get rid of a lot of the pomp and circumstance. Start making it, by the people, for the people always.

I feel like Rhetts joke was done really well. Delivery is everything. A good joke, well to me atleast, makes subversive commentary (in this case it was misogyny) and utilises other elements, like subverting expectations, by either key pauses or misleading the audience. It makes sense to make such an 'awful joke' because Rhett isn't that kind of comedian.

The wife is objectively correct on the floor vs. ground thing. I cannot conceive of how wrong the Mythical Beast is in this case.

I thought "to get to my neighbour's d*ck" was really funny to me. But doing the final punchline and THEN doing the Sean Connery one immediately after would be hilarious
