Eargo NEO Online Hearing Aid Review. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, reviews the Eargo Neo - Eargo's newest Rechargeable Invisible-In-Canal Hearing Aid available online.

Real Ear Measurement: • The Most Important HEA...
At the Consumer Electronics Show in 2019, Eargo revealed their NEO hearing aid which is their newest Rechargeable Invisible-In-Canal (IIC) Hearing Aid designed for Mild to Moderate High Frequency Hearing Losses.
In fact, as of right now, Eargo has the only Rechargeable Invisible-In-Canal Hearing Aid on the market.
Some aspects of the NEO have definitely improved over the previous Max and Plus versions. The biggest improvement is the form factor, particularly the flexi-palms. The new flexi-palms are significantly more comfortable than the flexi-fibers that the previous versions used. They are now almost as comfortable as a custom molded IIC hearing aid.
The hearing aid has also seen a significant upgrade as well. The build quality is so much better than before. The battery contacts are flush with the body of the aid, they've added additional microphone ports, and they made the body more cylindrical which leads to a more comfortable fit. Since less grime can get trapped in the recessed battery contacts of the hearing aid.
In terms of the fit and feel of the NEOs, they are very comfortable, and are basically 98% invisible. They are black so they vanish inside of the ear canal and the only thing outside of your ear canal is the clear removal string.
The other nice thing about the NEOs is that you don't experience the Occlusion effect which makes your voice boomy and loud to yourself. Because the device is suspended in your ear canal and allows for the passage of your own voice outside of your ear canal, it prevents this from occurring just like wearing an open fit hearing aid.
The new Charger case uses a USB-C charger instead of the Micro-USB from the previous versions. It stores several charges so you don't need the cable, and you also get 16 hours of battery life in the NEOs on a single charge.
The first charger I received from Eargo had issues with the devices not charging properly, and about 1/2 way through my first review, one of the devices failed. However, customer support from Eargo promptly replaced the faulty components.
The Smartphone App is another new feature for the NEOs. The App connects to the charger, not the hearing aids, so you can't use the app to stream audio or make adjustments to the hearing aids. The app is limited and doesn't really serve much of a purpose, but it does allow for Eargo Customer Support to upload some different preset programs into your devices. Eargo has 4 additional program settings they can send you - Mute, Flat-Response, Noise Reduction, & Feedback Reduction programs.
Contrary to popular belief, Eargo cannot customize the audio of your devices. They have the same programming for everyone, so it is on you to find the volume and program setting that you feel works best. That being said, I was able to perform Real Ear Measurement on the NEOs to see how close they would come to a Prescriptive target. They use a Linear prescription in their devices which is difficult to verify since almost nobody uses an Linear prescriptive method anymore. So I tested with a Non-Linear prescription, the NAL-NL2, but for only a 65 dB SPL input.
Basically, the Eargo struggles to meet prescriptive targets. It overshoots some frequencies and undershoots others. It is difficult for the devices to come close to the prescription for a Moderate hearing loss.
The additional Eargo programs were also measured to see how well they functioned. The Flat response program did reduce some highs and increase some mid-frequencies, but not my much. The Noise Reduction program does reduce noise by an additional 2-3 dB SPL. The Feedback Reduction Program reduces gain at around 3,000 Hz to reduce the chance for feedback to occur.
The cost of these devices is around $2,750. It comes with a 1 year warranty that you can extend for an additional year for a fee. You will have advanced replacement which means that if a hearing aid fails, Eargo will send you another one before you send back the broken one.
Overall, the Eargo NEO is a decent online hearing aid. It can't be customized, but the other benefits of being rechargeable and invisible might be more important to you.

As always, great job, Dr. Cliff! Eargo deserves respect for changing the landscape. Eargo fall short in these key areas, which hopefully they will solve and offer soon. 1) offering one hearing aid for someone with one ear with loss of hearing 2) custom programs to match hearing loss prescription 3) less important, hearing aid internal bluetooth capabilities for in the ear adjustments and audio streaming from phone or television

Here's an idea that relates to this Eargo video but could also have practical application for other online sales devices. You identified via Real Ear testing that the Eargo can only provide up to a certain amount of amplification, even at its loudest level. My idea would be for you to provide an audiogram that mimics this so that you could give the audience an idea of how much of a hearing loss someone could ideally expect such a device to work for. You clearly demonstrated that even at it's loudest setting, it's not hitting the target volume, but that was based on the hearing loss you set up your REM system to analyze. I'm suggesting you go the opposite way: Do the REM at the maximum setting, then determine how much of a hearing loss it could meet. They display the respective audiogram for this in your video, so that people in the audience can know whether or not this device -- or others that you review -- can adequately meet their needs. Just an idea!

Thanks, Dr. Cliff. Any hearing aid that can’t receive a hearing aid prescription is not worth this kind of money. Even the iPod Pros can accept a Mimi hearing aid prescription. I’m glad you did this review so I can cross them off my list.

My understanding is that because of the tiny batteries involved, BT is considered something of an energy hog. It is so problematic that Google invented a whole new low energy BT protocol just for hearing aids, but even that protocol is energy greedy enough that "in the Canal" hearing aids still have trouble powering BT. All I've found streaming available are Behind the Ear devices. Even so, the sound BT delivers is not what I would call music quality. Though it is fine for spoken words. For music, I've found the new bone conductivity headphones work well with hearing aids of all types. Amazon sells some very modestly priced bone conductivity headphones.

I certainly appreciate education on a variety of hearing aid options. If I had a mod -severe loss I could just mark these off my list because they are not intended for a mod-severe loss. Its nice to be able to know what you don’t need to help narrow down your options. It’s kind of like if I were shopping for a car and there was a great deal on a beautiful truck with 4 big mud tires. I don’t need mud tires no matter how great a deal ......so I can mark that option off my list.

Great video. I'd almost have perferred to see the comparison to a precipitous HFHL to see how it could match or overamplify that but there is enough information here to have a general idea. Could it be reasonably tested with a 2cc coupler? Considering the flexi-palms, that is. What are the inputs (presentation levels) for the noise reduction testing? Thanks for the video.

Hellow Dr.Olson; Since wearing hearing aids for three years now, I appreciated your video on Eargo Neo! because I was contemplating buying them. several issues are stopping me in my tracks! Being "rechargables, means each ear aid has a built in battery, The built in batteries have a charging life of about two and one half to three years. And on these you cant replace the batteries. So the Aids are then dead in the water! Kaput! shell out another two to three grand! The second Issue is in 2020, they offer an upgrade of the Nero, called Nero HIFI I want to hear what they sound like before spending two to three grand. And as far as i know they wont let you do that! I heard that on the more expensive hearing rechargables, The inner battery can be replaced, giving a person added time up to another two years or so.. Could you test out the Nero HIFI ones for us? As consumers we appreciate all of your professional advice! I noticed your right in your comment that they come out with something new or up graded, each year! In there add, they now say, they cover moderate, to severe loss, witch is what i have. Im wondering if thats true, or just a sales pitch because they lost business on those of us with severe loss!.

Just got a pair of Neo Hifi’s. I was very excited. I have moderate hearing lost. In short, they simply do not improve your hearing! The only way I know they are on at all is the ear piercing feedback I get anytime my hand or finger gets near my ear(s)!! I download the app. It kept giving errors and not connecting to the charger. You are prompted over and over to call support. I did. They said Sorry the app was not working with Neo Hifi’s. So all those claims about being able to change the program in the Neo. Simply not true!!!! Don’t waste your time, money, and loss more hearing to the ear piercings feedback.

While I wish the concept of "direct to consumer" was viable for hearing loss and hearing aids, it truly isn't. There are so many variables that impact how well hearing aids work for people, this eargo concept really doesn't benefit many people. This company and these hearing aids really oversimplify a complex subject and are certainly not worth the price point.... but then again, look at their focus: discreet, comfortable, easy, cheap(er). Their target demographic isn't necessarily people who desire great audibility, but rather "some benefit" while hiding their loss and saving as much money as possible. You get what you pay for.... and even then maybe you don't with these haha.

Thanks for the video, Cliff. Unfortunately, there was a lot of talk about the "positives" and very little about the obvious negatives. These amplifiers missed target on almost every test. Sure you can get benefit but I can also get benefit from a $75 Pocket Talker. Furthermore, I can get benefit by cupping my hand behind my ear. For $2500-$2700, this product is a joke. You can do much better for yourself seeing an audiologist and for the same money get real hearing aids that can hit target for soft, average, and loud speech and come with in person service from a LICENSED HEALTH CARE PROVIDER. Hell you can get a pair of Marvel M30's for less than $2500 and for a little more a pair of M50's. You pointed out the real ear results but the overall tenor of this video appeared to be a pretty positive endorsement of this product. If a pair of these Eargo's were $500 or so, they'd be a decent starter set for a mild loss but at the current price tag it's a very poor option. Just one guys opinion.

@sfrink1425 5 жыл бұрын
I agree here. For the price paid ($2,550 - $2,750), someone with hearing loss could get products and service from a locally licensed audiologist or dispenser that could more appropriately match target AND provide a lot lot more features, including a better cell phone app, more customizeable programs, true bluetooth connectivitly, etc. PLUS, and most importantly, get immediate and personalized follow-up care by someone in person. The prices Jim quoted for M30s are right in line with what I sell products for, and there are even less expensive devices available that can do a better job. The price point doesn't match up to the limited benefits.

I bought what you call "real" hearing aids at Costco, and they are a pain. The Eargo's suspended-in-the-canal configuration must certainly beat my hearing aids' jagged, wedged-in-the-canal configuration hands down. The biggest ear relief of the day for me is getting those blasted things out from under my glasses' temple tip ear surrounds, off my ears, and out of my ear canals.

Glenn Watson my friend got hers at Costco, but after trying the cheaper choice, she paid a bit more to get one she likes . The exam is free, and you can return the first one if you don’t line it.

That was my thought exactly. I work in an audiology practice and our baseline hearing aid is between $2500 & $3000 (from one of the big 5 hearing aid companies). So, I really don't understand why he would be pushing these as an option for that price.

@@kellyw1648 "Pushing". Really? Sometimes people don't want to go to an audiology clinic like yours or mine. Do we really want to alienate that group of people? I know I don't.

To the original commenter -- Yes, you can absolutely get less expensive products through a local audiologist or hearing instrument specialist. My own prices start at around $1,600 a pair for devices that have significantly more features than Eargo. To the other commenters, I don't see that Dr. Cliff is really pushing these products, as he doesn't sell them himself. I believe his goal is to evaluate the product fairly and let consumers who DON'T see him (or another licensed professional) know what they're getting. But I don't see the review as pushing the product.
