Working Horses With Jim

10 күн бұрын

Today Earl, one of our young Suffolk Punch horses, is on his own and he and Jim are doing some training! We are also revealing the winners of Lady's weight contest!!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Brenda, after Earl had his moment of unease with the shafts. You went to his head and gave him a rub and pat. He really calmed down from there. Jim isn't the only one doing great with the colts. All your time brushing is also building a good relationship. Respect to all you both do.

I whole heartedly agree with Jim, I’d rather an animal get shocked, scared or anything rather than hit by a car. My blue tick thought he’d say “hi” to the horses eating next to an e-fence, he got snapped, he howled for a 1/4 mile all the way to the front porch where he stayed for the next 8 hrs. That dog hasn’t crossed a fence line or roadway in 9 years. I’m ok with that.

Hi Brenda and Jim. I think Pansy will catch on to the grass eating after she spends some time with horses and cows who eat it. She just doesn't know ❤Earl did awesome for his first time alone. Nice to see a horse still listening when very nervous about a new situation. Keep up the good work 😊

Good boy, Earl!! He did very good being single hitch! One thing for sure, he doesn't have Baron's beautiful prance though! He and Duke are just as handsome as their brother and half-brother, Baron, though! Poor Pansy, she looked so lonesome. I'm glad you put a steer with her the second day! She even began eating grass by watching him eat!! I think she will fair better being with your other cows! I was surprised Lady hadn't gained more weight. She actually looks bigger this pregnancy than she did with Bree. I'm anxious to see if Bree gets a baby brother or sister!!!!!🥰

Jim, Brenda said about how nervous earl was when first put in the shafts but then settled down. I think his ability to calm down comes from working with other horses plus his trust in his trainer. You're ability to train and bring on a new horse takes a lot of insight and understanding.

Quite an event filled video today. Glad to see Pansy eating grass. I wonder if she wonders why she waited so long to enjoy that lush green feed. Will it increase her milk production? And Earl is doing so well. It's obvious that your experience with training horses really makes a big difference in how well they do. It's curious that none of the horses seem to react with Skippy running all around them now. I've seen riding horses react badly when strange dogs bark at them on a trail ride. Well, another fine video.

So much of Earl's lesson looked just like my weekend working with Pearl and Ruby my 4yo Percheron fillies. They've been working as a team and mixed with other older horses, both sides of the pole, and are quite calm and confident with a teammate. Ruby seems to be comfortable in the shafts after just one day. Pearl is catching on after two days. Other than time and miles, do you have any suggestions to help a young horse grow more confident and less nervous when working or driving single? I watch every video and all of your advice and ideas are greatly appreciated! 👍😎👍

Very, very good observations, Brenda. Probably 90% of keeping out of trouble with horses is self control, keeping your own emotions in check, not panicking when the horses panic, being the calm place in the storm they can depend on and turn to when they are scared. They don't want to be scared. They want a port in the storm where they don't need to be scared. You also need self control in order to keep working to get them back under control, and not give up and let it happen. If you keep fighting to maintain or regain control, most of the time you will succeed. If you drop your hands, you can end up in a world of hurt. Years ago I was breaking a half Arab half/Shetland pony for a friend. He'd had an accident in a cart years before, not hooked to the cart but got caught up in it in a field, and he was quite afraid of carts. As we were turning a corner, a wheel came off the cart and he totally lost it and took off. My passenger in the cart started screaming and everyone around me started yelling, but I tuned them all out and just got busy fighting to regain control. I got control of him within a few strides and got him stopped with no one hurt, but we did bend the metal cart shafts to about 45 degrees straight up in the air. No matter, I had a cob-size spring wagon, so we drove him in that thereafter, and he wasn't afraid of it. He ended up being a really nice driving pony, 13:2 hands, dapple grey, really pretty and really dependable. Earl is doing very well. He wasn't bothered at all by the shafts, but he has had a pole on either side, so the only thing new is having a shaft on each side at the same time. Bentwood shafts would help, because they are closer to four feet apart at the back rather than two or three, but horses can work fine in straight shafts. They just need to learn it. One of the reasons I don't consider any horse fully broke until they can ride and drive is because of all they learn from being in shafts. A saddle horse learns to cross his feet and side pass very well from being driven. They learn to be more agile and more aware of where they are in space, much more mindful and smart, from working in shafts. Getting a horse who is broke to drive to do a perfect 30 meter circle is no big deal, they are used to being limited and not falling in on a circle. Horses that are only broke to ride miss so much, and their owners miss so much. I do notice that Earl is a bit of a looky-loo about whatever is on the ground. He spooked that one time about the marks on the ground when you had harrowed the driveway, and I think the reason he kicked into low gear today was the puddles in the driveway. That said, if slowing down to look at puddles is the only problem you have the first time you put him in a cart, that is phenomenal and abnormal. Most horses are not quite this easy. One thing I fear is that your viewers will think this is normal, and get discouraged or afraid if it doesn't go this well with their own horses. Most horses take more repetition and more patience than this to get them started. Glad to see Pansy finally grazing. I guess the spring grass really shows the difference in climate between you and us. Around here, horses will founder in a heartbeat in the spring grass, and they balloon up to rolling fat. Most of the horses around here are wearing muzzles right now.

I couldn't help see the similarity between how God deals with us & how Jim was allowing Pansy to go toward the boundary & get zapped to teach her what will happen when she steps outside the boundary. Boundaries keep us safe from things that bring death and destruction. Just like that road would cause sweet little Pansy much harm. So while I'm with you Brenda about Jim not having to like seeing Pansy get zapped, Jim I can see how while it doesn't necesaarily bring you joy, you do like that it helps Pansy stay safe. Sorry if my little lesson is too much, just couldn't resist after seeing the clear example. I'd rather learn boundaries without getting zapped, but hey, whatever it takes to keep me safe.

Hey Jim and Brenda, I was only 96 lbs. too high my estimate on Lady's present weight. But I was pleased to hear that a Lady from Newfoundland Canada which part of the Atlantic Provinces of Canada and I hail from New Brunswick. Jim your really making progress on driving Earl single in the cart. It's so great to follow your training style with your calm approach , Backed up with your low key voice commands .Such as Careful Step, Gee and Yaw and of course the important one Whoa !!! At the end of the video it was obvious you had made a lot of progress with Earl today as he was quietly driving along the road like a good potential driving draft horse returning with William from your neighbor Andy's Place. In my own later years of training and driving younger horses in a high wheeled cross country cart . I harnessed and hitched up mostly working by myself . So i employed your method of tying the horse to the hitch rail outside the barn and then I brought the cart to horse. When i picked up the cart by the shaves the shaves were already approximately 3& 1/2 ft. above the ground and I was able to easily pull the cart forward with one hand and easily guide the shave through the shave loop on the harness followed by the hold back strap that I fed through under side ring on the shave. When I was ready I release the snap on the hitching rail and quickly gathered up my lines and quickly climbed aboard the cart and asked the horse to stand for couple of minutes before asking it to move. Sorry about the long winded comments. But this is why I enjoy and find "WORRKING HORSES WITH JIM "\so entertaining.

Hi Jim, as a Ex Dairyman/stockman in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇬🇧 , would you not try to scythe some fresh grass in front of cow to learn her and encourage to graze of grass.

I see you still have dandelions. In NE Ohio our dandelions usually die out by May 1. I was wondering when this video was actually filmed?

I’m just a few hours north of Jim and Brenda. Our dandelions are just coming out

@@heatherreckzin2183 - Interesting. Where I live the dandelions go away by about May 1. It comes to mind because there has been a recent push not to mow during May. One reason given is to allow the bees to feed off the dandelions. But for us that is too late. There are other reasons as well. One better solution for me is to have a flower garden that would feed the bees all summer long. Thanks for responding. I appreciate it:-)

If the cow does not eat grass, I would think that would keep parasites out of the milk.
