Riot is sampled from a song by Earl's uncle Hugh who also passed away this year, he alludes to him on Peanut. Think it was meant as a cathartic release and homage

BlacKyd I’m sure he’s not comparing lmao the album isn’t the greatest only the hardcore earl fans think this album is very good it’s bad to be honest it’s like an abstract painting that you have to be in the same mind space of the artist to understand it and find the beauty in it. The album doesn’t appeal to the mainstream nor should it, there are albums that do that like KOD, TABOO, and DiCaprio 2 all do this well but Earl took some very out there beats and put some personal lyrics in it and released it.

@@keithwhitson6597 Damn didn't know most people thought this was one of Earls worst albums. I fucking love pretty much every song on it. The more I listen to it the more I unravel, like hidden gems everywhere in his lines. It's almost impossible to take in everything and translate every "metaphor" even after hearing it over 10 times. All his criticism of the album is pretty much that he's saying so much that it's hard to take in. I find it intriguing, so many deep thoughts to explore and connect.

"Some rap songs" feels more like an abstract art piece experience showing the steady decline of Earl's mental health and battle with depression through music more than it is an album. Sonically, the glitchy, minimalistic production feels like it's a representation of his sporadic thoughts, sounding as distorted and turbulent as his deteriorating mental state; and as the album progresses, the more muddy and chaotic the instrumentals become -- mirroring his mental downward spiral. It's heavy

Artistically, as in just a form of expression. This album is beautiful. Earl’s lyricism, flow and cold delivery over these very dirty, raw and glitchy beats. Like everything in this album is a pure sonic representation of his mental state. Like he’s very depressed, just out of touch with everything in his life including himself to the point of him of just being in the border of insanity. This album works as a form of art and that alone.... NOW if you’re looking as an album to be entertained or hear Earl just Spit Crazy bars than this is album is not for you. As a matter fact this album is not looking to please ANYBODY and Earl is clearly aware of it. This is an album worth looking at as not only an important point in Earl’s life of where he is physically and mentally. It’s also an important album when it comes to talking about Mental Health in Hip Hop.

I feel like this album will spit Earls fanbase in half. The people who were expecting old Earl from 3 1/2 years ago are most likely going to be disappointed and those who were watching him grow and change will be ok and or love it. Also the best selection are definitely an acquired taste, this type of experimental beats aren't for everyone. In all honesty I love these type of beats. That plus Earl rapping over them just makes the album all so much better for me. But definitely and acquired taste for this one.

I’m fully aware this album is getting praised regardless, it’s just that I believe its being a tad bit under-appreciated right now. 2). Just because it’s 2018 don’t mean a goddamn thing, music has no boundaries and just because the tone of a song is odd or not normally produced don’t mean it’s bad... 3). This a KZfaq comment section about a fucking artist and his latest release. Shawn please understand, I don’t think this album is meant to possess replay value and Earl knows that. With Earl’s father passing away his depression, drug use, loneliness and suicidal thoughts - this is album gives us a feeling what it is to experience all and still be existing. The album sonically feels all over that place because that’s the whole point - it represents his state of mind over the last 3 years. The use of old soul and jazz samples (with distorted mixing) adds beautifully to Earl’s attempt to find his roots and his place in the world. It’s a culmination of abstract ideas and feelings. Just like all of us.

The reason Shawn brings up the replay value of an album is because that plays into how you receive it. Can you really say you loved an album if you only listen to it once ever? Personally, I don't think so. A truly great album has you revisiting it due to its enjoyment factor.
@rushiljain23
@rushiljain23 5 жыл бұрын
Zuri Fair enough, I completely get your point. But this is a different kind of artistic expression. Just because an album does not have replay value doesn’t mean it’s not a great piece of music. I mean I can’t even look at this album cover for too long otherwise I start getting a headache. It’s meant to be repulsive and abstract.

Had this shit on repeat since it came out last night and God damn it's incredible. The production to me is incredible. Grainy and dusty samples that have been manipulated to perfectly to convey the emotions that Earl spits in his bars. While the flows aren't anything crazy or technical he spits what the tracks need to create this hazy, dark, yet bright and beautiful mood. There isn't a single bad track in my eyes and even Red Water which is just a looped old 8 bars says a lot to me artistically and highlights some of the important topics of this record. The lyrics are a huge step up from what came before (most likely since Earl is older now and has more to talk about, along with the events that have happened in his life) and there isn't a bad or corny bar in here. It's short and direct to the point but there's so fucking much that with every listen it just gets better. Ngl it's gonna be one of the best of the year along with KSG in my eyes. 9.5/10

This album is great. SRS has this dark but content feeling to it. The sampling is masterful, the beats are smooth but dirty, and the lyrics are powerful. If you dig alchemist, Marciano, Muggs, Westside Gunn than this will be right up your alley. I can see why people won’t like this as it’s different from the rest of his albums but it’s beautiful to see Earl grow and attack the demons he’s been facing.

It kind of feels like the hip hop head's hip hop album of the year. Each instrumental uses such a simple loop that grows more complex with each listen. Each verse is deeply contemplated, and the structure is circular. I wouldn't blame someone for bouncing on it after the first listen but it's definitely an album designed for replayability. Personally I love letting the whole album wash over me and I get fully invested with each listen.

Bryan He hangs on replay value to much, not in the context of the album but on tracks. When this video came out I had a problem with his criticisms of it. He tries to review this album based on how many tracks are good rather than what it meant, how the songs make the album. He is reviewing the album not the songs. It just seems lazy or at least not how an honest reviewing would go about criticizing it. You made a great point.

After like my 50th listen of the song Playing Possum, after months of its release, while it was playing in the background, as i was cleaning my room and for a split second my mind went completily into the ideea of the song, like his parents being kind of honored and given praise to, i randomly began crying like full on, but with my mind also into the chores that i was doing. I was still crying when i actually realized i was crying. It was a weird and beautiful moment for my own personal reasons and i think it was the first song from the album that i cried on. That's why i love Earl. I feel like talking or just listening to some deep buried part of me that always wants to get out and live and experience shit, but stays most of the time down there because of its fear of failure/hard work without quick results or hard work without the expected result and just overall hopefull state of my mind. Shit has been good lately, even tho i feel like i'm standing in the exact same spot everyday and not evolving in any way, a lot of the times. I kinda went on a tangent here, but that's why i like Earl, he shares his stories taken outside of his own box and i feel like that's also how he deals with the shit in his life.

I don't think it's purpose was to grab a huge audience(hence the title), I just believe he really did go through all that trauma of realization that he was mentally dismembered. The ending track represents him coming to a sort of coping mechanism which is why that track is so melodic and more pleasing to the ears compared to the rest of the album. I do get why you wouldn't necessarily return to a lot of these tracks, I think it was just an honest representation of his literal coming out of the burrow he was in and finding a kinda peace IN MY OPINION

for me this album feels more like an album for earl sweatshirt himself, as if hes just trying to get his life out for the past 3 years on some tracks. it uses heavy distortion and lofi elements on a new level that isnt common in this generation of music, i believe that the distortion represents earl sweatshirts disconnection from the rest of the world. as if hes been so focused on his life that he forgot to connect with everyone else outside. I also did notice as you pointed out the phrase "why aint nobody tell me i was bleeding" i believe this represents him leaving behind his old friends because they didnt tell him that he was dying on the inside. anyways thats my thoughts on earl sweatshirts album, also im aware that this is a late comment, but i just never watched the full vid here so ehh

For me this album is a 10. It hits really deep, it reminds me of something i was just able to overcome, my addiction. At the beginning of the album earl lost himself, the beats in the first 3 songs all have these crazy hypnotic vocal loops, it was really scary for me thinking abt it how it reminded me of the intrusive thoughts that come with addiction, they become distracting of how you’re able to present yourself and organize any thought in your head, for the first 4-6 songs on this album it’s like the beats are controlling his vocal performance. On December 24th he talks abt mead acid ruining his mental, thus reminded me of the spiritual interaction i had that helped me go cold turkey, being able to identify that by letting yourself be addicted to things you let them control how you adapt to environments, it fucks with how you’re able to interpret any sense completely. The mint is almost like a fresh breath of air for earl, he literally says he’s in control now of the substance in hand. Azucar is the sweet moment for earl, it seems like this is where he’s able to get back into his groove again, and eclipse is where he’s finally one with his self again, and it’s the best feeling ever bc once you’re able to find yourself you can understand other people’s feelings and how you can help them. It seems like the track Riot! is actually the opposite of a riot in that the instrumental is like what you’d hear when you’re reaching the white light at the end of a tunnel, it’s as if he’s finally able to settle down the riot in his head and sleep well. I feel like earl specifically doesn’t give a fuck what he titles this work bc he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks abt this album bc it’s a really deep moment for him, this album seems like it’s more for him and his health rather than for his fans.

Riot is like finally finding your way out of hell and instead of arriving to a party you just walk around a city watching everyone live their normal life and even though some would says it boring and mundane you can't help but think how much sweeter a normal way of life is

This album is hypnotizing. I’ve listened to this album all the way through countless times and still can’t decide if I enjoy this or not. There’s just something about it’s atmosphere that keeps me coming back.

This is one of those albums you have to listen to quietly in a dark room not talking at all in between it and let the instrumental sink into you

The way I see it, the title embodies that slumped and hollow attitude of a depressed person and the kind of vocabulary they use. The dis-jointed and scattered production takes you on a journey of depression kind of like the stages of it through out life as you grow. The ending track solidifies this for me because it is a bittersweet celebratory track to close out the depressive experience as you learn that it'll forever be with you but you just learned how to handle it better with stuff being better in life but still no fulfillment. An interpretation of a depressed person
