Early 1970s PSA About Racism - "Mixed Company" with Barbara Harris

I originally posted this not knowing the origin, but a fellow KZfaqr commented the following:
"Its not a PSA - its a 1974 B movie called Mixed Company with Barbara Harris, Joseph Bologna and Lisa Gerritson (who used to be on the Mary Tyler Moore show)"
--
This part in particular is a pretty awkward scene. The dad, especially. Wow.
--
There is an interesting back-story to where I got all these TV spots:
While working in a TV studio in 1999, I met a very strange, eclectic old man who had a collection of vintage, rare and off-color television spots that he had been collecting in his 40+ years of working in television studios. They were professionally archived from film, so the quality of these images is grainy and discolored-- but also very true to the era.
I begged and pleaded to let me have a copy, and voila -- I have a copy.
There are dozens of crazy spots on this tape. I will upload as many as KZfaq can stomach.
Enjoy!

This technically isn't a PSA, but rather a scene from a forgotten 1974 dramedy called, "Mixed Company". Check out this scene featuring a promising child actor in Haywood Nelson, who gained later fame in "What's Happening!!" (1976-79). Future "Freaky Friday" (the original version) star Barbara Harris is the mom.

I am from Chicago. I now reside in St Paul Minnesota (3 years). What a significant cultural change! Chicago is still the most segregated city! I love my city! Always will, but real is real! Some people still think like this!

I love Chicago too, and lived there for several years. Yet it’s the 1st and 2nd generation immigrants from Italy and Poland which have perpetrated these stereotypes onto others especially the African American community. Same is true with Detroit during the Second Migration from 1910-70, where many groups were competing for factory auto jobs, claiming AAs were “stealing” those jobs from whites.

Some familiar faces in this PSA ... 1.) Barbara Harris (FREAKY FRIDAY) 2.) Joseph Bolonga (RAGS TO RICHES) 3.) Lisa Garretson (THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW) 4.) Haywood Nelson (WHAT'S HAPPENING) I'd say this was from the early '70s given the ages of Garretson and Nelson ... Garretson was in her late teens when she was featured in the MTM spin-off PHYLLIS which ran from 1975-77 and Nelson was a teen during WHAT'S HAPPENING's 3-year run from 1976-79.

Being serious for a moment here, but imagining what it must've been like to be a black child back then... Imagining something like this happening to me as a child, there really aren't words to describe how shitty that must feel. I don't understand how people can be assholes over superficial things, let alone an adult doing it to a child.

This isn't a literal PSA is it? Because there doesn't seem to be any sort of lesson here. They never discover that they have more in common than they first thought or realize how painful hate can be or anything like that. There isn't even a narrator to tell us what we should learn from this awkward scene.

@Markieo Just aired on 'this' network, is supposed to air again, tho clearly it is edited for time for one thing (just because it is edited, doesnt mean racism is the first thing cut out) tho alot of language is clearly removed, from Haywood and the Asian girl to name two. But interestingly enough, the little girl's comment about locking her door was removed as was the peanuts line, even from this little clip, and the 'all the basketball players are . . . ' line likewise was removed.

This brings back allot of memories growing up in the segregated south. In 1973 the first black family moved in on our street. As children we were programed to be afraid of and hate black people. The thing is, this family had a pool table and my brother and I loved pool. This was when I began to abandon my racist views.

Oh for crying out loud! NOT a PSA announcement, was a comedy about a white couple with 3 kids who adopt a Viet Namese girl, a Native Am boy & Haywood Nelson from What's Happening. The father, Joe Bologna, was supposed to be a jerk. It was funny and ended funny. The Native American child was hilarious from what I recall. The little white girl had funny moments too. This movie airs on This network about twice in the month of March, if anyone wants to see it. It is a '74 movie

@wekwafe This clip was taken from a '74 movie about a white family who adopt three non-white kids. It is out of context as his wife wants to adopt a child, he doesnt as he is hardly home due to being a basketball coach and traveling all the time, so there is misgivings about bringing another child, black or white, into the home when he is hardly there now.

Around 1970 I was going to an all white grammer school on the Northwest side of Chicago. I remember the day the first black children were starting at our school..There were irate parents all around & police (some on horseback) We kids could not understand what was going on & thought (hoped) that the school would close..lol (but it didn't) But I did feel sorry for our new school mates!

@halcaannen A truly ironic post as this clip hardly is telling what was going on in the movie. They were adopting three non-white children. Freddie here was the first. It was her idea, not the father's. both the father and Freddie loved basketball so the hope was he would be a good influence, but unfortunately he was an absent father to the while kids, always away, he didn't want another kid, black or white, for him to neglect.
