20 February 2014: As part of a new three-year 'History of Capitalism' course, historian and former banker Benedikt Koehler, delivered an inaugural lecture based on his forthcoming book, Early Islam and the Origins of Capitalism. In his lecture, Koehler proposed a strikingly original thesis; that capitalism first emerged in Arabia, not in late medieval Italian city states as is commonly assumed. The discussion was moderated by Legatum Institute Senior Adviser, Hywel Williams. More information: www.li.com/news-events/events/...

`Amr ibn Al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when the Prophet died, he left neither money nor anything else except his white riding mule, his shield, and a piece of land which he left to charity.

@@luqmanabdurrahman2040 Forgive me, but I think you are a bit incorrect. Socialism and capitalism are 19th century western concept, primarily popularized by Marx and Weber, and these terms are inadequate to explain the reality of economics as seen through the lens of Islam (and any other sane and groumded economics thinking such as the Austrian School). The most proper way to explain Islamic economy is that the religion is a market economy protected by sharia, which is definitely do not acknowledge socialism (zakat is not the same with wealth redistribution as known to socialists), thus it cannot be said that Islam is an equilibrium between socialism and capitalism. Realizing the truth of this is the key to bring Islam back to it's proper place into civilization.

Because all his wealth has been put into trust endowment (waqf) and inherited into his family and ummah. The prophet lives a simple life but not poor as today people think in today modern terms. Many Muslim teachers taught people that the early Muslim followers were poor, I did my investigation on the life of the early sahabah and it proved wrong that they are poor, most of the Prophet early followers were instead powerful riches wise learned people, there are some poor and slaves but the stigma of being poor was not true. They are not poor in the wealth, but they live the simplest life.

Sorry to say, the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah's Peace Be Upon Him, didn't leave this world wealthy, he left it as one of the poorest people. He never tried or wanted to gain any material wealth, his wealth was spiritual. This man is the only person regardless of persuasion to say the Prophet Muhammad died wealthy and I have read very much about the life of the Prophet.

The Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him had wealth when he died. And indeed the sects of differences between the Sunni and Shia arose from the conflict in the inheritance of the Prophet Muhammad 's namely Fadak , which is a place which was captured from the Jews as spoils. On the dead of the Prophet Muhammad Fatimah claimed it to herself and AbuBakir claimed it to Aisha. Ali supported Fatimah and Umar supported Abu Bakir. And it was not settled although the Glorious Qur'an have verses in inheritance but they were not resorted by the claimants.

Holy Prophet (sa) was the wealthiest in Arabia because by the time of his death he was the leader of all of Arabia. The whole wealth of his nation was at his finger tips. Allah granted him victory and control over the whole of Arabia. Cleaely that is what he meant by wealthiest man in Arabia.

The rechist man in Arabia lived in a mosque made of palm steam and covered with palm leaves. What a joke. The idea of Taxes didn't exist in Arabia. Mohammad PBUH didn't give the so called Army a salary, because there was no such an army. It was organized several years later after his death . In Madina he made a market to counter the centralized market controlled by the Jews at that time.

This is mostly a description of capital and trade, not capitalism as such. What marx and weber described as the system for society that capitalism developed, was the legal organization that benefitted full marked to exist, the turning in of everything into tradable goods, thus marx calls capitalism Marked-capitalism, and protected by law and violence, as he also says. What capital demands for its existence is access to value beyond the normal trade-exchange, beyond what is human possible to create in one lifetime, because capital is surplus, and marked is competition, so amount must pair or over or over go in order to proceed its existence. Thus full marked-capital can only exist on a base of colonialism and extortion, wether in own lands or in other continents. In order to have this accepted a certain way of existential understanding must be promoted, since extortion demands crossing the natural moral perception. Weber described the transition from internal versus external norms (internal communism, external non-normity) to a full "external" moral (or non-moral) with a change in all kinds of theoretical explanations to uphold this way of conducts, a change in the existing order of 'protection of the family, the clan, the close society versus the stranger other/the others who holds no obligation towards one'. Thus all ways of religions and theories were needed to in reality excuse the expanded conducts of exploitation that also would hamper ones own closest associates and family, in principle. Any trade society would be in good place to develop into this, and so also any society that territorial bade for cross culture exchange, the Levant, the Silk Road areas, the Northern Africa, but also in early times the Chinese harbors. But Weber explained that the Chinese philosophies were of such strength that it countered any chance of pure markedisation of society. So this may explain that a need for some base of philosophy of social organization is present to allow for property to triumph human and natural relations. As such one could perhaps propose that islam (i do not know the theory), as well as protestantism in the way of Calvin paired with Luther (as Weber describes), works for this as they provide for the theoretical excuse for the conduct of exploitation as a plan by divine authority. In protestantism it is a kind of 'success in your business on earth is a sign of being among "the chosen ones", and a reward of god'. I think one cannot explain the existence of an empire as Koehler does, even the islamic empire collapsed, tried again several times, but failed and continued only by the way of violence and suppression, not unlike any other. The Roman empire tried by pluralism, but failed, thus perhaps the islamic found that pluralism as a governing theory was not a functioning way. But actually turned over time to limited pluralism through self governance in exchange for extra taxes and freedom from military service. Marx' s concept of 'overarching structures' covers the place of religion in economy. But it is very good to highlight the economical face of a religion as Koehler does. Even if I disagree, and think that islam did not do anything else than accommodate in to an already existing developement and praxis of exploitation and accumulation.

I think you will notice Islam is more of an all in one ooperating system for human not to forget humanity when the time for cyborgs come or aliens. IF we even get that far. Muhammad is a prophet because he was able to see this. In other words. Islam is a personal relationship with truth. Now and in the future. Because truth is so so so complicated. What if your mother was a cyborg? Muslims would still be around. The world will move, islam just uses it. Capitalism not being any different. Islam uses the best systems, letting people who arent muslim take the risk of expirement

Islamic economy support doing business but no interest. Also no hording of Wealth. Either you invest your Money to do more business or after a certain amount you have to give charity to the people who is in need. Mandatory charity (zakat) only apply on money or gold or silver, not on your house or land. That is according to my understanding.

Richest among the "original muslims" was Uthman Ibn Affan, he was of the Ummayds who were prosperous merchants that monopolized trade with Levant, as opposed to Bani Makhzom who were trading with Yemen and Abbsynia in the south. The Richest par none was probably the head of the Ummayd family at the time which was Abu Sufyan and his elder son Mu'awyia

@mwheezee
@mwheezee Жыл бұрын
to claim he was never rich is a false narrative that was advocated by the Umayyads in an attempt (among many) to tarnish the prophet BPUH reputation as a descendant of a noble wealthy family. this narrative was later adopted into mainstream literature for a multitude of reasons. Indeed, the prophet's wealth as well as the Hashemites of that time were comparatively less to that of the Umayyads ( think of it like comparing millionaires to multibillionaires of our time) but that doesn't mean that the Hashemites were poor. However, its important to note that while the prophet started out wealthy, he didnt keep much of that wealth during his later years, and there's evidence he had worldly possessions when he died, most notably the Land of Fadak which sparked a feud between AbuBakr and the daughter of the prophet.
