The flower farm is changing and blooming. Officially into summer and past the solstice, the long days and heat are starting to encourage a lot of growth and new flowers. Join Serina as she tours you around the early summer farm, focusing on some of her favorite flowers for this mid season, like yarrow, bee balm, lilies and more. Come and see the failures and successes so far for the flower farm this year, and spend some time among the flowers.

S C L Sleepy Creepy Leepy You should look into more flowers that bloom late spring. You have lots of filler’s. So many of my flowers are in bloom right now and it looks amazing. Can you add things like butterfly bush, balloon flowers, hydrangeas, roses, daisies, hostas, heucaras, carnations, ageratum , etc. Just a suggestion. Enjoyed the video very much and you look adorable in that dress.

After your last video, I’ve been thinking on ideas on how you can have more sales… here are my ideas ☺️ I know a few of us noticed that the red roof made the color of the flowers be off… instead of chaning it to a white roof, which could make regular clients not find you, have you thought about adding a horizontal fabric under the red roof? That way the color of the flowers will be bright and you still will have the red roof that identify you and your brand. Also, maybe you could make with, for example, Canva a poster of the meanings of the most popular flowers you use, so people could check it. Make a card with your name and logo and the text “From:” and “To:” so if the buyer want to give it as a presnet they will remember you and also the person who recieve the flowers will know you. Somehow, there should be an image you your family and the house so people know it’s a family bussines, I found so many people who prefers to buy if they know the story behind :) Finally, going to two markets, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. That’s all my ideas 🤗

I like the idea of the "To and From" business card for each bouquet. Also, I like the poster idea so ppl can know what they're buying and names of the flowers. Not sure how I feel about putting a photo of the kids for everyone to see. Ppl know it's a family farm just by the name, location, and fact they sell at farmers markets.

You can try "edible" bouquets with tomatoes on the branch, basil, dill, flowers, etc. 🤷‍♀️ I love those lilies! ❤

Have you considered selling shorter bouquets regularly at market and in the roadside stand? Not with jars, just the little nosegay bouquets that could sell for about $10 or so. That would be a way to use your abundance of shorter stems and have those stunted beds contribute to the revenue stream until they get the height you anticipate at the end of summer. Personally, I like smaller bouquets for a kitchen windowsill or in the bathroom, and I always have an assortment of jelly jars to tuck nosegays into. Might be something to try for a few weeks without extra investment or commitment.

This is just a gentle bit of constructive feedback… When you’re trying a new flower variety that you’ve never grown before, maybe don’t buy so many plugs, bulbs or start/plant out so many seedlings until you learn the tricks and growth pattern/habits of the plants. Maybe instead of ordering or planting 200+ plugs/seedlings, just do 25-50. Then you won’t be taking such a big loss in both your labor/time and the upfront costs to buy from your seed/plug/bulb wholesalers. I love your channel and both your and Ian’s positivity and your passion for the farm and flowers. I wish you both all the success in the world! 🌸🌺🌷🌻

Reasonable advice. Just an FYI most places that have plugs of varieties that flower farmers want have minimums for each variety (often 200) and minimum $ amounts as well. The varieties flower farms use are often quiet specialized and can't always be found other places in small amounts.

Have you ever thought of drying plants for herbal teas? borache,mint, lavender, black current leaves etc are very good for teas. you could dry them in an old picture frame in the sum low maintenance.

I started Rudbeckia Indian Summer inside in February, after stratifying the seeds, and planted it out early May. One plant has 14 stems about to flower.

I go to a market and the flower vendor there sells all their flowers in mason jars as vases. Very few bouquets.

Several people have short height mason jar arrangements at their desk. Looks very professional and much more interesting than a houseplant.💮

If I were a customer I would buy that, rather than a full size bouquet. Shorter stems aren't a bad thing, they are just a different thing :)

Our flower shop buys short stem ranunculus because we can use them in centerpieces for parties because we make them low so that you can see over them. There are many shorter vases that can be used for short blooms. They can also be used as a focal flower in front of a designed arrangement. So I would still check if your local florist wants some of them. There's no way they will need 1000 stems unless a massive party is happening. 😊 You should make some short stem bouquets for people's kitchen or dining room tables.

Worked in a garden center/ florist center in my early days. We used to make dried flower wreaths and those long things you hang over a doorway. We would make some and also take special orders. They sold reslly well.

For anyone looking for border flower ideas (ie not necessarily cut flowers), just wanted to mention Strawberry Seduction yarrow. I share Serena’s love of yarrow but never thought I would like the red shades. I saw Paprika but didn’t care for it myself. Ended up with Strawberry yarrow simply because I planted in my zone 6a Ontario garden all the way through the late fall and it was all that was available. Holy crap did it take off fast despite it being end of season. Flower heads still look good when browning. It’s a strong and very upright variety but not too tall, a few feet high and compact clump (manageable in the border from what I hear - some yarrow can take over) and it’s feathery foliage looks even more delicate and “plume-y” than my other varieties (moonshine and saucy seduction). I guess I should wait another year before recommending to see it’s true habit but so far, two not-so-green thumbs up.

Bells of Ireland love the cool weather. Get them established in the cool weather and you will get the taller ones. If you can get them to overwinter they would. E even taller. All cool flowers grow taller if overwinter in the ground. I find if you can get them to grow in a cool basement under lights in late winter and then get them planted in very very early spring, like Temps just above freezing to get established you are good for great tall flowers. Make sure you use deep trays.

That purple Burgamont is a wild Burgamont and it is Perennial. It blooms the second year and then every year after that so don't pull it out because you might be surprised. :)

Soledego (Goldenrod) is a native that is invasive here in VT. So is Ammi (Queen Anne’s Lace). It’s amazing what is considered a garden thug in different parts of the world.

I was just out in my yard cutting out as many Queen annes lace as I could find. It's become invasive here in my area, along with the lemon balm I have growing everywhere.

Those bells will reseed themselves. They’ve been reseeding themselves in my flowerbed for over 10 years. In fact, they are now weeds there. They are now in mostly shade after the porch we built and don’t do well.

I really enjoy these types of videos, Serena and Ian. It is very interesting the way you explain the growing conditions and the way you touched on temperatures required for seed germination. There are quite a few plants that require cold stratification in order for the seeds to germinate. I have to put some of my seeds in the fridge in damp peat choir or vermiculite if they require longer cold periods than our subtropical winter has to offer. It does work though. You have the advantage of a lengthy cold period in Canada.

My bells of ireland look te same 😬😄In Belgium we had a lot of rain in the spring and after the rain, boom there was summer. We also had a cold spring. My tulips bloomed in may, this is late for our climate. Next year! Every time a new experience 😊

Mullein is traditionally a super helpful medicinal plant (my mom is super crunchy ❤) good for pulmonary health if you drink it as a tea and good for the feet if applied topically according to her and the internets. She used to put it on my feet when I had blisters from jelly Sandals.

With the shorter varieties, you should sell bud vase bouquets. Our local Whole Foods sell out of them. I understand flower farmers need the long stems, but don't underestimate the value of the smaller bouquets; sold at a reasonable price I think an individual customer would purchase 3-7 small bouquets over one large bouquet. My zinnias are a disaster this year, between the weather and the rabbits I won't have that many blooms. Still starting a few more (along with cosmos...the love hate relationship) hoping for some late season blooms.

He does, he is a nice sweet boy outside, but inside our house he's such a grump. He growls at you if you just walk by him, then he goes outside and is all cuddles and cuteness. Lol

My glad's are popping in and the yarrow row is starting to fill in. I need to add some stuff and love your input so much. I moved Peony that DATE OVER 120 years ago. they are a treasure to me. Mullein tea is really good for coughs and respiratory issues. I allow some of it to grow in my garden. I dry it and grind it for tea. It comes in handy for winter.

I’m done 5 Pennsylvania- borage is a mainstay for me I love it so do my customers!!! I grow tons of this hardy bad boy - makes a great cocktail when muddled!

Loved seeing all your perennials, so you grow Fennel or bronze fennel or Dill or lots of other herbs as a filler/edible for yourselves. Just interested I have a mini food forest yr 1 and I want all the things 😂 Love all your flowers and video’s keep going you are inspiring and informative. And I wish I had land (UK) to grow lots of flowers. PS your cats are beautiful.

I’ve been learning that mullien is medicinal. It believe it is the little flowers u use. Also it has the nickname cowboy toilet paper. There is lots of info out there. U could make a salve to sell to supplement the farm since this year has been tough. I’m planning on getting it for my garden.

Ohhh what happened yo yout zinnias, its kinda late. 😢 thats the one thing i look forward to see on your summer flowers every year. Those big beautiful zinnias get me hooked on watching your blogs, and i started planting those ang buying all the varieties from johnny seeds. Im from Chicago, and my zinnias are tall and ready to bloom and you are always ahead of me every year. I think this year i beat you to it. 😢😊
