I had a rak miner fry last year. It was hooked up to a rooftop antenna. I didn't do my research and realize the antenna should be grounded. I think that these lightning arrestors help protect the helium miner from built up static electricity in the antenna as well.
@dancooper50
@dancooper50 2 жыл бұрын
Great job Caesar! My only critique is on that lightning arrestor you crimped the plastic part. You're supposed to crimp the metal part between that and the screw. This can be done by unscrewing that connector so that you can get your tool around it and then screw it back in and face it downward. I've been cabling for 30 years, which includes RF, Network, fiber optics and any other low voltage cable you can think of. The company I work for builds 5G for every major carrier.

Where did you get the antenna mount that holds it to the pole? I've been looking for one and I can only find them in bundles with antennas, but I already have antennas. I use a flag pole so the pole is pretty wide...
@DinoCaputo

I'm not an electrician but you'd likely need a way bigger gauge (like 2AWG or 0AWG) ground wire to carry the surge to ground vs that small wire. If you think of the size of the ground wire for your panel in the house its way larger. Just a thought if you are going to go through the trouble of installing one.

Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. Why not use a pole extender to get your antenna even higher up? Also, could you put miner in attic? Perhaps lessen your cable length / signal drop by having miner closer to antenna. Or is the router closer to garage?
@CesarCinema

No problem. We are ok with the length of the pole. I think it’s better to have an outdoor antenna vs an antenna in the attic and the cable loss is not a big deal. The router is 20 ft or so from the garage door.

Hi Caesar, I’m a new subscriber. I am currently syncing a new bobcat at my sister in law’s house. She has a one story but I would love to install a rak 8 dBi antenna on her roof. At the moment it’s connected to Ethernet but when I install the antenna does it need to be connected to Ethernet to do well in earnings? Only reason I ask is because her router is in the guest room and I’m not sure she wants me to drill a hole through her wall to feed the LMR through. Would def appreciate your input!

@1teamboy
@1teamboy 2 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the arrestor is to be underneath the Antenna to protect from static elctricity and positively and negatively charge clouds and storms, left over electricity from the earth, etc. it can travel. As for close to your miner, I’m not sure what that even means….
@tylerharpster929

You want your lighting arrestor outside. The arrestor is used to shunt the lightning away from the cable and into a ground rod.
@1teamboy
@1teamboy 2 жыл бұрын
@@tylerharpster929 it’s not really for lightning. You can’t “shunt lightning away”. If you have on installed, and lightning strikes it, or your house/building you are toast my friend. LA area has terrible/poor transmit scale.. wanted to know if theres a way to fix that and turn it into green scale

Hey ceasar. Been watching your videos over and over. Running into issues. Perfectly fine rak miner for 2 months. Port forward open. Bought new antenna and cables and lightning arrestor. After mounting antenna and plugging everything back - like your videos, my inbound and outbound has no connection. Port shows closed on portchecker. Router advance settings still has port forward to 44158. Ive tested ethernet cable with laptop - laptop works and runs fine.. Disk in diagnostic reads ok. NAT type unknown... Ive rebooted both router and unplugged miner multiple times now in between everything. From what I read I think it's got no internet going to the system? Or is this due to bad 400lmr coaxial and 5.8dbi antenna?

Why does everyone keep calling these lighting arresters, they are NOT. these are nothing more than atmospheric static discharge lines. These just keep simple static in the air or from wind from zapping your minor. If the antenna was actually struck by lighting the minor and just about everything downstream would be fried. A 10ga copper line is not a lighting arrester. Lighting rod grounding wires are around a 2ga to 0ga.

PLEASE do not run your ground wire to a copper pipe in your house. Run it to a proper ground connection. PLEASE use a proper crimp tool to crimp your ground wire to the lug. DO NOT do it like Caesar did. You should be able to pull on the ground wire and it will not pull out because it is mechanically crimped in place. (not just on the plastic) Do NOT run your ground wire parallel to your coax cable. Your lightning arrestor is designed to give the electricity a place to go other than your cable. If your cable is zip tied to your ground wire, the current flow in your ground wire due to the lightning strike will induce a very similar LARGE current in your cable, nullifying what you're trying to do. You should add drip loops before you go into your house to keep water from running down the cable and into your house.
