I mean no disrespect but Larry had big wins against opponents who were past their prime. Larry could not have beaten prime Ali or prime shavers. Larry peaked after the golden era of boxing. When Larry was past his prime Tyson made minced meat of him. He could not give a good fight like his aged opponents gave him in his prime.

Great fighters the both of them. The Acorn was an absolutely murderous puncher. 68 ko's in his 74 wins. Just WOW!! But Larry is my favorite all time. Terrific all around boxer with a piston like jab, great right hand, great chin, determination and conditioning. Just a pity that he maybe didn't really get the respect and the type of acknowledgment that he should have. That's mostly due to the giant shadow cast by Ali.

@jeryd2003 1)That's true. Holmes said he always thought he could beat Ali because he sparred with him and later on got to where he could handle Ali in sparring. But that was in the early 70s when he started sparring with him and by the mid 70s when Holmes' own career was on the rise, no wonder he was hanging with Ali then. Buit you never hear the guys from the 70s that had tough fights with Ali acknowledge how incredible his speed and reflexes were when he was in his prime.

The 70's and 90's were very tough eras in heavyweight boxing but I tend to think that all things are relative. I think the K brothers would have been very good contenders in any era. All-time greats? Not sure but they are unusually skilled for their size and that would make them very difficult.

I agree with what Larry says about boxing today. Guys like Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Lyle, Holmes and Shavers fought with heart and they fought to win, always pressing the action, never giving up. No one fights like that today. Holmes here says what I've always thought: the fighters of years ago were far better than the present crowd. Go by approximate decades. Now: Wilder, Joshua, Hayes (ffs), Furey. Ten years ago: Klitsckos, Valuev (!). Mid ninties: Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, Tyson. Mid eighties: old Holmes, Michael Spinks, Tubbs, Witherspoon, Dokes, guy from Louisville whose name slips my mind, very young Tyson, even Frank Bruno. Mid seventies: well, you all know the names, some of the greatest in ring history. My point is, look at how the quality has diminished decade by decade. Alright, you can argue there may have been a reversal in trend from the 80s to the 90s, but overall it's been downward. This is unique in heavyweight history since the Queensbury rules, never has there been such a prolonged slump. Most sports fans take their game as a metaphor for life; why wouldn't they? That's why schools promote sports as a valuable learning, teamworking and character - building exercise. Others talk about the zeitgeist, the "spirit of the times", or how the overall dominant philosophy determines the direction taken by an era. Look at the drugs issue in sport, look at the media, reality TV, the current candidates for the presidency. We live in the Era of Shit.

The last epic meaningful battle in the heavyweight division in terms of 2 great heavyweights fighting one another was Holyfield - Tyson in 1996 and 1997. Lennox was a fine boxer/puncher. He could be hurt which made his fights more entertaining just like the great Tommy Hearns was. Lennox never captured the piublic's interest really, though.Last era heavyweight boxing was at the forefront of the sport was when Evander held the title and then around when Tyson came back. Holyfield fought wars with Bowe, Foreman, Tyson, Moorer, Mercer, etc. Since the mid to late 1990s (I cant believe it's already been 20 years) heavyweight boxing is no longer boxing's premiere division, at all. I love boxing, but at this time we really need another Joe Louis. Even one great heavyweight can do it. 1920s Dempsey 1930s and 1940s JoeLouis 1950s Rocky Marciano 1960s and 1970s Muhammad Ali 1980s Tyson (and Holmes to a degree; he's better than Tyson but Tyson more exciting) 1990s Evander Holyfield... 2020s We need Joe Louis back. LOL Greg Page is the top heavyweight from the 1980s from Louisville I still remember watching him live easily handle Coetzee. They televised one of Page's amateur fights with Cosell interviewing him afterwards a looooong time ago I remember watching that live, too. LOL.

Holmes should've been known as simply "Larry", like Walter Payton was "Walter", Barry Sanders was "Barry", etc. It would be interesting to see what would happen if either of these guys woulda been in their prime in 2000s. Hell, Larry beat Ray Mercer, and gave Holyfield all he could handle 10-15 years past his best. Holmes deserves to be right there with Ali, and the other all time great HWs. As for Earnie, if he landed his best shot on anyone who ever fought, they were going down, most for the count. He didn't land his best shot on Ali, or he woulda gone down, too. Probably not for the count, though, as Ali had a forged steel jaw.....

@Khalifornia Stallone never offered the role to Frazier. Matter of fact Stallone never got in the ring with Frazier. Frazier had already made a cameo in the 1st Rocky as himself. How much since would it make to have him come back in the same movie series as someone else? I don't see why people are so quick to bash Stallone. He's an actor for godsake.

@torchkit Amen to that! Why is it that sports videos have to have "music" (just a bunch of computerized noise) in the background? What makes it even more annoying is that this was a good interview. I wish that when they put these videos together they would can the techn-pop.

Holmes was damn great and had a chin of concrete. Don’t let the Tyson ko fool you. He was tough.

Shavers dint have Mike's finishing ability. When Mike kicked down Holmes, he came at him with quick short flurries; Shavers kept swinging long looping punches, those were easier to manage than the flurries Mike did. The legs were gone so it didn't take big swings after it.

The audio production seems pretty poor. When you can't hear them because maybe the microphone mix isn't up enough, it's not accounted for.

@jeryd2003 2)On top of that, Ali wasn't all that soft a puncher. More aggressive guys were able back him up and took away from his power. But in his early days he was dropping guys when he wanted to drop them. Watch him fighting Cleveland Williams. He dropped him with a one/two BACKING UP!!! Yeah, Williams was past his prime then, but still had a tough chin. But see, the guys that gave Ali tough fights in the 70s KNOWS he's the greatest, and they want people to think THAT'S the Ali they fought

+voltaspeeder17 I think he was referring to Wladimir with that comment, everyone knows Vitali has a solid chin, do you remember that monstrous uppercut he took from Lennox Lewis? That was, in my opinion the hardest punch I saw a guy land without ending a fight.

Does he? why who tested his jaw? Barr lennoks with one huge uppercut? Shavers hit harder than Lewis so did foreman , so did Lyle.

Had Shavers fought in the Cruiser Weight Division he would have Dominated it and been Champion. It sucks he never got to be Champion but he will be knowing as the best Heavy Weight to never win a title.

He more meant that he actually was forced to fight Earnie.. If he didn't fight him, he would be known as a ducker and most likely, as Holmes wasn't liked by anybody, would have gotten his title or titles stripped of off him.. He had to fight him because he was the number 1 contender...

Not fair to compare the washed up Parkinsons disease Ali of the late 70's to a prime Holmes. In Ali's prime his jab was just as good as Holmes. Ali also had that amazing speed, movement and reflexes.

@kitchin07 dont forget also that Shavers was mostly a right hand puncher. He didnt have much of anything else. George Foreman could punch with either hand. Thats why he had a higher ko ratio!

@ah93704 true . I believe Tyson was more effective as a puncher (sharper snapper punches as opposed to heaviness). Even Holmes said Tyson had a very good jab. Shavers was just a very heavy puncher. I will always pick effectiveness (snap, explosiveness, timing combination) over heaviness - why you think Tyson instilled fear like no one else. You can not deal with something you can not see.
