I knew Earnie Shavers from the gyms in the Akron Canton area and had an opportunity to spar with him once. He was just fooling around arm punching with an open glove but when he hit you you got that sinking feeling. Earnie was a great guy everyone liked him who knew him. RIP

Shavers power is in a different class. The killer puncher category. He had fatal/permanent injury inflicting puching power and it's fortunate nobody died in the ring getting hit like that.

Ellis was already wobbly from the Shavers right cross near the ropes, but his instinct was to try to keep attacking rather than fall back and protect himself...that didn't work out too well.

Yes, Ellis was really pasting him but when Shavers didn't go down it wasn't good for Ellis. That was some upper cut! There was a lot of action for such a short time.

Ellis ended up spending his last years in a care home suffering from Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Punches like that one from Shavers must have contributed to him ending up like that. Every boxer who steps through the ropes knows that is the possible risk they are taking with their health. I guess they justify it to themselves by saying "That is the type of thing that happens to other guys but not me."
