As a 40 year old now who's still drug free and "edge" (I did puff a Cohiba cigar in Havana so i guess i broke edge:) ) I am not sure what I think about this song anymore. I know it's not literal but it evokes a very shortsighted approach drugs and drug use. As someone who is still drug free it is now crystal clear that drugs must be completely decriminalized and legalized for the same reason Prohibition was thrown out. The "War on Drugs" that the EC generation grew up in ended up incarcerating millions of mostly black and brown people, and created the largest prison population in the world. Drugs legal and illegal affect the working class and poor the most and we must commit ourselves to eradicating the problems that capitalism creates, not becoming part and parcel of the authoritarian law enforcement mentality of kicking the drug dealers asses to save the day. I'm curious what people think. I love what the XXX and punk scene did for me as a kid. It kept me positive and drug free and introduced me to the world of radical politics. But as my worldview has changed I feel as if straight edge didn't evolve with the times.

You're completely right but man this song still goes so hard
@shawn88473 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. Drugs must be decriminalized yes, they must be socialized. Controlled by workers and communities, not giant corporations. Capitalism creates that empty shell that makes people want to do drugs but also it stops communities from providing amazing drug-free alternatives, such as tight communities, unions, and funded community activities on a big scale. The song mentions corrupt politicians and corrupt enforcement. I interpret the song as a rally cry for workers and people to organize and create a world of solutions, not authority. A "firestorm" can be anything you imagine to fight negativity, and defend your community. Hope you get this message. All power to the people.

I gotta disagree. Ex junky here. No drugs should not be decriminalized. I have a hard time seeing heroin, crack, or meth being legalized. Sure alcohol destroys peoples lives too, but not on the level that the above mentioned hard drugs do. And I’m not speaking with no background, this is from personal experience. I’ve lost at least 20 friends (and that’s not an exaggeration) to overdoses. I’ve never lost a friend to alcohol use. Sure people die in drunk driving accidents, but heroin takes way more lives. You never know what is in the batch your buying. Could be laced with some bad shit. I get what your saying about the incarceration of black and brown people, but in all honesty, I have a more simple solution than legalizing these drugs. Teach people not to deal. It’s pretty simple. And if you do deal and get caught, then man up, take responsibility, and take the consequences. It’s no one else’s fault you decided to deal. Again, I understand where your coming from, but as an ex junky who’s seen what this shit does firsthand, I respectfully must disagree with you. I do want some sort of outcome that is healthy for all involved, I just don’t see legalizing drugs the way they did alcohol in the prohibition era as the answer.

@@christopherkimber7679 decriminalizing is different the legalizing, I think a great solution would just make sure there are a lot of free accessible addiction clinics/hospitals
@jasonruggen15113 жыл бұрын
@@christopherkimber7679 I find ironic that all these know it all "edge" guys think they know better than a person who has actually been there and done that, not just "thought about it" and not just regurgitating other people's ideas that they think is "enlightened" or progressive. Brainwashed sell outs.

lyrics: "Street by street. Block by block. Taking it all back. The youth's immersed in poison - turn the tide counterattack. Violence against violence, let the roundups begin. A firestorm to purify the bane that society drowns in. No mercy, no exceptions, a declaration of total war. The innocents' defense is the reason it's waged for. Born addicted, beaten and neglected. Families torn apart, destroyed and abandoned. Children sell their bodies, from their high they fall to drown. Demons crazed by greed cut bystanders down. A chemically tainted welfare generation. Absolute complete moral degeneration. Born addicted, beaten and neglected. Families torn apart, destroyed and abandoned. Children sell their bodies, from their high they fall to drown. Demons crazed by greed cut bystanders down. Corrupt politicians, corrupt enforcement, drug lords and dealers; all must fall. The helpless are crying out. We have risen to their call. A firestorm to purify!"

While musically the song is a banger, the message is both productive and outdated. Nobody is disagreeing that drugs aren't good for you. They aren't. However, our approach as a society to drugs and declaring a war on drugs is the wrong approach. We spend so many billions and billions of dollars a year on eradication and punitive measures that do not work. That billions and billions could go to rehabilitation and treatment facilities as well as addressing the social issues that are most likely to produce drug addicts. It's no coincidence that impoverished areas have many more times the rate of drug addiction than wealthy areas. Instead of spending billions of dollars on locking people up after they begin using or dealing drugs only for them to emerge a few years later and continue their drug habits, spend that money on social programs like subsidized higher education to give impoverished people some hope of better future and make them less likely to turn to drugs to deal with life's hardships. This whole idea of staging a violent offensive against drug addicts and drug dealers is simplistic and ridiculous.

Personally I think if we just eliminated the population below a certain socioeconomic level, a "cut off" point so to say, a lot of those problems would take care of themselves. You'd be eliminating the top market for street drugs and also the main demographic for violent crime. On top of that our governments wouldn't have to spend nearly as much on social welfare programs. Schools, hospitals, and prisons wouldn't be nearly as crowded, demand for petroleum would decrease along with prices, and food security would increase. All as a result of a controlled population decrease. It would be amazingly more affordable than keeping those subjects around and spending the money for intensive programs which may or may not work, and even if they do work, you might not see a return on your investment in the end.

I’ve been vegan since 92 and I’m not “slim”. Age catches up with you, metabolism slows down, you have less time and energy to work out, a vegan donut shop opens up 5 minutes from your house 🤣. I’m 42 and play basketball with people in their 20s two to three days a week so I’m not that bad off but I’m not the skinny 20 year old I once was.
