Active Regions 3712, 3713, and 3716 Keep an Elevated Solar Flare Risk for the Weekend. These three sunspot clusters are magnetically complex and have elevated solar flare potential - but have been surprisingly lackluster since midday June 19th.
Still, the two southern regions are classified as Beta-Gamma-Delta configurations; that means they have mixed magnetic polarities throughout the sunspot group. Even the northern region has some magnetic mixing. Magnetic complexity is a great indicator of solar flare potential and is something NOAA forecasters look at closely when creating flare forecasts.
Flare Forecast: M-class flare activity with a slight chance of X-class events is likely through the weekend due primarily to three noteworthy sunspot groups over the western visible solar disk.
