Final Fantasy IX - "Terra" - Folk Arrangement with Lyrics

This folky vocal arrangement is part of my contributions featured originally on ‪@PixelMixers‬ Final Fantasy IX album, Beyond the Mist, released in 2019. It was also posted by ‪@ocremix‬ under the title of "Homecoming."
"Terra" has always resonated with me -- from the prominent harp to the rearranged "Home" theme that features in the game. Since FFIX is my favorite game, I gave this remix my all and wanted to do my best to capture the same nostalgic, mysterious wonder I felt arriving in Terra for the first time.
The lyrics I wrote are in two characters' perspectives. The verses are inspired by Garland's point of view, while the choruses are in Zidane's. I performed all the vocals, harp, soprano and tenor recorders, hammered dulcimer, Irish bouzouki, piano, and percussion elements (tambourine, egg shakers, rainstick). I love the way the "Terra" melody sounds on the recorders, so I decided to do a sort of "call and response" in the verses as well as featuring the soprano recorder later on in an instrumental section. The densely layered vocal harmonies in the final chorus may have had an accidental influence from Appalachian folk music (particularly the Carter Family), as well.
I had to be extra nerdy and use red and blue as prominent colors in the video to represent the two worlds of the game, Terra and Gaia, of course. I'm still pretty proud of this arrangement even 2.5 years after finishing it. I notice something new and endearing about FFIX and its soundtrack every time I play it during different stages of my life. It's truly timeless. I hope my deep love for this game and its music comes through here!

This is so criminally underrated, I can't express how beautiful and serene these lyrics are. For me who played this game as a kid and spent 5 years playing it [reason being that I wasn't a frequent gamer, lol] this game formed so much of my mind, it's hard to express in one single KZfaq comment how much it means to me to hear this

This theme always feeled so otherwordly. Most FF9 music was so epic and so different from other Final Fantasies in PSX. Loved the them and story more related to the main characters people and towns, than themselves, always made me think in the whole of the world and lives, is very unique, like you don't fight as Vivi for Vivi,but for all black mages, even Steiner and Amaranth who were mostly thinking in himselves learned that everyone matter more than our ambitions or worries, even in the end with Kuja.

"Ho~om, I lost~ my way, on ro~o~oads e~ver wea~ving. Ho~om, were dark~ness fades, and hearts, are e~ver be~le~eving." Etruan(sp?)/Katethegreat19 did a vocal of this song something like 15 years ago. I've never heard it the same way again. But her chorus has always resonated with me. The part about "where darkness fades and hearts are ever believing" is just such a nice description of "home" to me. I do like yours, too, but I'm not sure anything (questioning why you travel or the reason for your existence) can ever be as...cozy?...to me as the thought of home being where darkness fades and where hearts believe. Though I REALLY love this arrangement. The music is fantastic and I love your voice and vocals, too. Not trying to downplay that at all.

As a longtime fan of Erutan myself, I love her arrangement of The Place I'll Return to Someday! While the motif is the same, my version is of Terra, to be precise. It's a different take on the "home" theme of the game, meant to capture the initial confusion and disappointment that Zidane felt upon arriving in his birthplace of Terra. So, the lyrics aren't really meant to feel "cozy." Like I mentioned in the description, the verses are in Garland's point of view, and the choruses are in Zidane's. Garland describes the setting and attempts to convince Zidane to join his cause. Zidane is pondering this and reflecting back on the meaning of his life, as he questions one of the goals he's been working towards all this time: finding his home and where he came from. In the game, he even goes so far as to call it a "dump" in Bran Bal. This song was meant to evoke the mixed feelings he has upon returning home, and it not being what he expected (a feeling I'm sure many can relate to). And yet, he's still yearning for a place to belong, and at the end of the song, resolves to make his own destiny, whatever that may be. I hope that helps explain the premise of my lyrics for the song. I'm glad you liked my take on it. Thanks for listening and commenting! 😊
