Guitarist and longtime EarthQuaker bud Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos, Bygones, Death Grips), along with his studio assistant Dot, graciously takes on a tour of his "rat's nest of insanity." Yep. Nick's got a gear collecting problem, and he knows it, which, as G.I. Joe told back in the day, is half the battle. "Collector's style. I got stuff. I like stuff. It's like an addiction sort of thing," Nick confesses in this look at his junk-packed back room and storage space full of 20 years of junk he began acquiring at the tender age of 14 with his first pedal, a DOD FX52 fuzz.
Nick's not just an inventive guitarist; he's a collector and connoisseur of Fender Supersonics and Jaguars. He's got guitars, plenty of them on an overloaded guitar rack, up on the walls and piled up in a corner of the room. Nick's also a sonic explorer, so he's got hundreds of pedals covering multiple large shelves organized by brand, color and intuition. But don't expect to see him whip out too many Reverb-ready, rare treasures. "I don't have cool expensive stuff," he says plainly, but the stuff he does have is plenty cool. Check out his collection of guitar synthesizers acquired from scouring Craiglist, eBay, pawn shops, and all the places people use to offload gear.
In addition to guitars and pedals, Nick's got a taste for "electronic doodads," including toy samplers, actual samplers, an old Radio Shack branded Moog synth, several drum machines, and pads, and the genuinely odd instrument known as Air Synth Eyes. We also see Nick's "fun shelf" full of toys, books, a rat-shaped Rat pedal, and other wacky things that make him happy. Then we peak into his storage space featuring five Roland Jazz chorus amps, his specially modded JCM 800 amp head, and even the studio of bassist Juan Alderete the pair used for their much missed Pedal & Effects blog and KZfaq show.
So, sit back, relax and ride along with Nick as he goes full "deep junk style" about his gear and collecting habits. "There's a ton of stuff in that backroom that absolutely I don't need, but it still brings me joy to have that stuff and have access to it...Figuring out what brings you joy when it comes to music is probably the most important thing above anything else," Nick says. Truth.

Ace, fantastic, brilliant. I’ve followed Nick and his gear journey for several years now and he never fails to be engaging, humorous, irreverent and yet incredibly serious about his craft at the same time. More like this please! Nels Cline is cut from similar cloth in terms of engagement and attitude.

I grew up going to see Tera Melos, Portugal The Man, and The Fall of Troy. Nick is definitely a guitar hero of mine-along the same lines of a Tom Morello, Thomas Erak, or Omar Rodriguez. But he’s technically proficient as well even tho he uses tons of effects. The way they navigate sound is so interesting.

The new jazz chorus amps have a modified distortion circuit if I’m not mistaken, the jc40 does at least. It sounds a bit like a rat, definitely better than the previous models famously had distortion unit. But I just use my twin reverb and will use the fender pro jr that’s coli my in when I want tube amp grit, and use various pedals to push them. Compressors sound beautiful through the jazz chorus amps.

37 pedals a shelf x 4 shelves per unit x 5 units = approx. 740 pedals. But of course, we all know that tone is stored in the pug. Nick's music with his various projects and his videos with Juan have certainly expanded my comfort zone, and oddly enough always brings me back to the aspects of music that excited me as a little kid before I knew the words to describe them or anything about the instruments or players that made it happen. Fun trick: if your JC-120 has casters on the bottom, it also doubles as an environmentally friendly vehicle (brakes not included).

I saw Nick and Juan do a demo/clinic in Portland in April of 2019. Watching those two jam together with just bass/guitar and pedalboards was one of the most genre shattering experiments in technology I had seen in years. There are a select few musicians out there truly pushing boundaries and trying to find new territory within the guitar rock genre. Nick Reinhart is absolutely bridging new paths between musical genres that hadn't previously existed. It might be a bit clumsy and chaotic, but that's what innovators do. It's a beautiful thing to witness... also, Aphex rules.
