Throughout February, EQD's "Show Us Your Junk" video series is showcasing the "Rock Block." It's an actual city block in Los Angeles' Silver Lake neighborhood that houses the studios of veteran producers, mixers, and musicians Aaron Espinoza (The Ship), Rob Schnapf (Mant Sound Studios), and Dave Trumfio (King Size Sound Labs). Also included is the Rock Block "OG" Manny Nieto, whose Suplex Audio has since moved to a new location.
Like his Rock Block buddies, Rob Schnapf has a vast amount of audio junk in his Mant Studio. More than two decades in, Rob and his former production partner Tom Rothrock have their names in the credits of records of all kinds. From beloved artists including the late singer-songwriter Elliot Smith to Guided By Voices, desert rock legends Kyuss, soul goddess Mavis Staples and R&B organ icon Booker T. Jones with whom Rob won two Grammys. Rob and Tom also helped unleash Beck's "Loser" onto an unsuspecting world through their label Bong Load Custom Records and worked with Beck on Mellow Gold and Odelay.
Though Rob says he's an "anti-gear fetishist," he sure has a lot of it at Mant. His stash includes unique guitars, classic mics, newer boutique-made mics and outboard gear, and a Pickle Steel (see, it's kind of a steel guitar thingamajam with a...well, just watch it), making its world recording debut in this episode.
Once you've absorbed Rob's gear, head on over to the EQD Blog for Rob's Talk About Your Junk. Get more details about his days interning at the famed Record Plant's tiny studio, the Micro Plant, how he adapts his recording style and process to each artist and how his "one song at a time" recording method helps keep everyone focused in the studio. www.earthquakerdevices.com/bl...

I love the fact that these videos demonstrate that studios are what people make them not all the things you're 'meant' to have. It's shitting on the idea that you need all of the top end stuff (I mean a lot of them obviously do) to make a record.

@@EarthQuakerDevices absolutely. I was going to say something similar. Same with producers. You don't need a big name to make an amazing record. As a huge Elliott Smith fan I have become a huge Rob fan over the years naturally. The amp for LA he mentions.. I always thought the guitar tone on that track was so hot and searing, in a good way. So great getting info about Elliott's 330 obsession. Elliott was _so_ good... in every aspect. The most complete songwriter of all time. I love any insider Elliott info, thanks for talking about him Rob! FABOTH is my favourite album of all time, so good work... You tried to ride things in and out cos Elliott liked that... This was so nice to hear wow. Suicide Machine is a great song, but good call! and thank God you figured the King;s Crossin mix out, maybe my favourite song ever.

B&W 801's! And ProAc's too! Nice to see a rock and roll type studio that isn't just using JBL's. I worked for a Hifi shop that sold BMW speaker's, I sold a couple of pairs of 802's back in the 80's and I owned a couple different models of their less expensive bookshelf speakers. Ever heard BMW 808's? I heard those once at the CES show in Vegas, being driven by Threshold monoblock amplifiers. Much bigger than 801's, and huge dynamic range. I have a pair of ProAc Studio Ones at home that are in need of refoaming....
