Hello everyone and welcome to part 3!
Thank you to everyone who donated to the Buy Me A Coffee page in last week's video. I have now received enough to purchase mulch for the garden beds for this lady. You are all greatly appreciated. The mulch will be purchased and spread at the very end of this clean up so be sure not to miss it!

For those of you who have been watching my channel for a while you will know that there isn't a lot that upsets/bothers me. The one thing I don't like however, is when people are being taken advantage of and I hope I am wrong but that may be the case here.
This lady has had a man come and mow her lawns on a regular basis for over 10 years but as I make my way through this garden I have to question what exactly he is doing with the exception of pushing the lawn mower. He came to mow at some stage between my first and second visit and he clearly didn't catch the clippings as there was grass everywhere and it looked an absolute mess. The path has been hidden for years and most areas under trees and shrubs aren't being whipper snipped.
So the question is...do I talk to her about it or let it be? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I think I would have a talk with her about the so called gardener, he is taking advantage of her for sure, especially if she doesn’t understand what his responsibilities are in the yard. Maybe you could give her a rough idea, and she could write down what she feels she wants done when he comes, and a proper clean up afterward. If he doesn’t agree, she should try to find someone else. 😢

You might approach the lady with the question “does your “gardener(?)” usually pick up sticks and limbs?” That may open the door to more conversation. Trust me, once she sees the end result of all your work, she may step up and have a talk with this gardener. It will be so beautiful. The progress is absolutely amazing. I’m always sad when a video is over, I enjoy all of them so much. But, there is always the next one. I want to urge everyone to subscribe. Best channel ever. ❤😊

I agree! Getting more info from the client abt what the gardener is doing for the price will allow her to ask him some questions or adjust their agreement. I kinda thought maybe he wasn’t doing as much since all of Ryan’s work is ongoing but if he seems to be “pretending” to mow that’s not cool!

Yes Ryan, I agree with everyone else here, this lady is not getting her money’s worth with that gardener. She needs a new guy. So glad she has you there now to reclaim her pathways, etc. and prune back the overgrowth. You have made an amazing difference already in 3 episodes! ❤️

I would talk to her respectfully about her current lawn guy, maybe some suggestions for expressing to him what she expects. But if she is OK with the arrangement, let it go. I agree with the others. I wouldn't tell her that she is being taken advantage of because she may just get defensive. Instead, I would tell her that now the garden is cleaned up, it can be properly maintained like most professionals would do. It gives her the opportunity to decide with the correct knowledge but without the judgemental words.

I would talk to the lawn guy. After you edge, trim and dispose of waste, I would tell him "I got it in tip top shape for you. I expect you to maintain it to this superior level and if you don't I will help this lady to find a reputable lawn care company."

I am absolutely enjoying the heck out of this series, Ryan ... paths, paths, and more paths ... and WAY overgrown shrubbery! This lady hit the jackpot when you showed up to help her out. As for the lawn guy, I'd venture to say that it would depend on what he's charging her. It could be very little ... you know, all that she can afford. At least the grass gets mowed if nothing else. He could be doing her a favor just doing that on a regular basis ... and charging accordingly. Of course, it's a different story if he's charging her what other lawn guys would charge, but doing a fraction of what he should be doing. As for bringing this subject up in casual conversation ... well, I have a feeling that you have the tact and diplomacy to handle this well.

What a professional and very detailed cleanup. You are truly making this yard a very nice place to be. That path clearing looked very challenging. Once all of the large bushes and trees are removed, it will look great. All of those unused pots, wood pallets, broken fence pieces, awning, fabric and small items need to be removed forever. She needs you for her permanent gardener. You truly care about making it easier to maintain from this point on. You will make it a lovely GARDEN and it will no longer be an unkempt, trashy, neglected YARD.. I thoroughly enjoy your skills and your strong work ethic. You have truly blessed this woman with your landscaping talents. It’s wonderful to see how you help those that are physically challenged or overwhelmed with such huge tasks.

This lady doesn't need a lawn guy, she needs a gardner that does lawns as part of his duties, sounds like you! Yes it is a touchy situation to decide if you should speak up, I think you need to go with your gut on how she would respond if you brought up the subject.

I would say something to your customer. I really enjoy your videos. I'm in the USA and it's really different the way y'all go about yard work. My Gardner would faint if I mentioned hand weeding.

So true! I keep trying to get mine to edge correctly, but he just scalps it. However, I keep him because I have a very difficult backyard that most do not want to touch, so we understand each other 😀

Speaking from the perspective of someone who has had seriously debilitating illness, there is a good likelihood that she is aware of the lawn guy’s deficiencies, but has just chosen not to deal with the situation. It takes a lot more energy than you would think to have that kind of conversation. Add in the follow up, whether monitoring him or trying to find and evaluate a replacement, and less than acceptable performance suddenly starts to look good. You have to choose where to spend your limited energy in her situation, and there are better and more rewarding places than substandard lawn care. For her to make a change could mean that you need to present an acceptable alternative to her that requires no effort on her part. I am loving this series, by the way, and I am no longer ill, just a lot older. Sigh…. 💕🇨🇦

Who would have thought there was a “patio”under the washline, what a beautiful garden this once was and soon will be again, thanks to you. Yeah about the lawnmower guy, I guess he’s grown on her like a regular person in her life, just having someone cut the lawn, though done very rudimentary, was nice. And by paying him for this job gave him some income too. Perhaps he’ll enjoy doing more once the trees and bushes are cut back, making his work easier. And if he gets advise on how to do it like a pro, he’ll just might do that too. Oh that stump by the bbq 🫣 Keep up the good work Ryan, just hearing her marvel over the light in her kitchen is just heartwarming 😘

I'm 67. My lawn man doesn't pick up trash in the yard that has blown in it. I will be taking care of my own lawn soon.

Get one of those grabber sticks with pincers. Makes it so much easier to grab rubbish off the ground and into a bucket. Ive been doing some local streets near me recently with it, and makes a huge difference in the area to folks ive noticed.

You do such a thorough job. As far as the guy that does her lawn, the thoroughness and detail that you guys in Australia do is so much higher than those here in the states that you would have to make the decision as to whether you think she is getting her money’s worth or not. If he doesn’t do as thorough a job as you do then I would question the amount she is paying. You are amazing in your work. God bless you.

I’d talk to her to find out what their agreement is. Not every lawn guy is as thorough as you or others I watch, I’d imagine that the payment reflects the difference in his work in comparison.

What a wonderful transformation so far! Agree that the homeowner should re-examine the work she is getting from her current lawn guy, and then make a change. There was obviously some thought put into the landscaping, and your work to reveal it is, indeed, very rewarding!

I would have never thought any maintenance was done on that yard. With all the items lying around there’s no way to mow it all and definitely no way to edge. I’m guessing he went around anything and didn’t bother moving things to do a proper job.

She didn't hire a gardener, she hired a fellow to cut the grass! Big difference in skill set and money charged.

After completion of this massive cleanup (which will look amazing) speak to the lady about your rate for mowing. Or refer another lawn service. Someone spent a lot of time and money on the lawn in years past. You are bringing it back to life. Beautiful again. Love the video. Thank you.

Let her know that you believe your work speaks for itself. If you would like to do the work on a steady basis let her know this, too. It won't take a lot of care once you have taken care of all the big stuff. Great job!

Part A may be a discussion of what types of care the yard would now need, seasonally, etc. and then about how much it would cost and she could present her chosen requests to her current lawn guy and get bids from someone else who is working locally, close by, and thereby willing to show up. It is nice to see the space, accessibility and brightness in the recovered yard areas now. Dropping by every few months would also be another solution to helping keep it in order. Bare minimum help actually means a guarantee of falling behind. Thank you for fixing the backlog. The walkway today looks to have been lost a long while. Enjoying the renewal. 35:15, that is a huge view and space renewal in the lawn area.

It is always fun how you cut some branches, then do something else, and then come back to the first plant and cut some branches, and then even come back a third time! I guess sometimes one need to create access first. Wonderful job, hopefully it will encourage the lawn guy to do a bit more.

Wow a lot of hard work, but so worth the results. I would talk to the client, just so she is an informed customer. It’s always good to check around, know what services are out there and the range of prices.

There are always unscrupulous people who will take any advantage they can. Whether it's doing the bare minimum or, in some cases, nothing at all. You're correct to be concerned and if I were her, I'd want to know.- After all, if he's been cutting her grass for that long - how the hell did it get so bad? You do such meticulous, thorough work and this was no exception! Now I've gotta wait for Part 4!

Yes, you should say something. You come from multiple positions of strength here - 1. you ARE a professional, 2. you are repatriating a garden for her that her present lawn person has been remiss (for whatever reason and with unknown agreements and/or expectations, of course - which would be explored upon speaking with her), 3. the lack of diligence on the part of the present lawn person is disturbing the work you are performing on this property. Of course, approached with delicate diplomacy - 15 years is a long relationship and it wouldn't matter if it were only 1 year or 1 visit.

I would definitely talk to her about the so called lawn maintenance. I would suggest that she gets some quotes from other lawn care providers before talking to her current one. Keep up the amazing work! 🍀💜🌞

Yes, it is a wonderful feeling when we are able to make a difference in someone’s life! You need to approach her about her current lawn care. This individual is clearly not a professional and is only doing the bare minimum. He is taking advantage of her. YES for sure. There are industry/professional standards to recognise when it comes to paid work. The existing "mower man" is taking the piss in my view and needs to be replaced. Love your work Ryan.

For many years there has been a guy who rode to town on his bicycle pulling a push mower. He was slightly mentally challenged and appeared frail. But he was there to mow whenever he was scheduled. All he could do was mow. But he charged a super low rate per yard. Most people tipped him extra. For the first time in years he stopped showing up . Found out he had passed away. Felt like we lost a family member. Our yards look better not but we pay 3 times the amount to get it done. So make sure he is not just doing the best he can and she thinks of him as a friend.

What a marvelous job you've done so far. Just love to see the paver stones revealed. As far as the lawn work, it depends on what she's paying. If you think she's being overcharged for the work that's being done, or rather not being done, perhaps you could recommend someone more reliable that will give her better service.

As the garden is now easier to maintain advise on keeping it good for the ladies mobility. We have recently had building work on our property and the work men had no idea about heath and safety. Until I demonstrated how I had to climb in and out of the trench they had dug to get out of my back door they didn’t see a problem. They then quickly filled in the trench!

Impressive result. Can’t wait to see more. My vote is for all those bushes and trees to be gone. She can’t manage keeping them neat and manicured so a pretty, open yard is the right choice for her. I think you get the medal for discovering every square tile walkway and patio in Australia …or do they find you? It’s always fun to see them uncovered.

Excellent cleanup as always. Yes I would speak with her about your concerns. But maybe have a replacement yard person you can suggest to her. She is clearly overwhelmed by the yard and any guidance you can give her I feel will be appreciated.

I would say it depends what money she is paying the gardener and what agreements she has made about the work. But he could have for sure done some egging once a year. I would for sure talk with her! Nice work you’re doing looks great.

We had the same problem with our mum’s cleaner. She spent an hour cleaning, then just sat & chatted all the while being paid. She came to my mother’s funeral on Mon and was very defensive! I wonder how her lawn guy mowed it with the bit of rubbish there was there? He’s going to love you because you’ve made so much extra work for him. Good on you!! 👏👏

A lot of work on this one. After watching the paver path reveal the scope of work the "lawn mower man" should be reexamined. Really looks good! Having said that, I'm taking some Tylenol and going to laying down to ease my sympathetic sore muscles....😊

First of all, we enjoy your channel and look forward to each new episode. Your approach with a balance of hand-work and power tools is satisfying and provides ideas for improving our lawn and garden care techniques. Thank you! Secondly, the client may have an arrangement with her long-term provider that is based on a motivation other than efficiency or outcome, such as charity or friendship. She likely has her own reason and story for tolerating a less-than-expected outcome. Also, your exceptional work will certainly serve as a solid example for what's possible when the long-term provider next pays a visit.

Maybe her current lawn man is doing what's affordable to her on a regular basis. I'd probably mention that he "should" be doing more and hear her response. I'd make sure she doesn't think you're trying to take over his job, though. LoL

In uk gardening circles that chap would be referred to as a mow, hoe and blow (maybe even missing a few bits of that). They are after the easiest job for the maximum money. They really grate on those of us who do all inclusive, sensitive gardening as you do. I would suggest that once all the lawn edges etc are up together "it should be much easier for him now the mow and keep the edges tidy" and maybe offer that if she has any other problems or needs your help she can contact you any time. With unclear boundaries its probably hard for her to monitor his work. Alternatively could you possibly throw in a free lawn mow at the end for her to see what it should look like (i know its hard as time is money)

That’s a tough job but you are killing it! Definitely talk to her if you feel she is being taken advantage of. Perhaps you know someone you can recommend to her that would be affordable and do a good job and you do detail management quarterly.

I agree with the others, too. It’s possible that over the years, her lawn guy has gradually done less and less and she didn’t notice how bad it was until it was way more than what a regular lawn guy does. I’d talk to her about him. I do hope that it will be kept up. You can tell someone spent a lot of money creating the space and that it was beautiful.
