The video describes how to make, use, and care for a simple hummingbird feeder. We have been using a soy sauce dispenser turned upside-down for years now with great success. Included here are a few variations on feeder construction, as well as how-to safely feed hummingbirds. Please enjoy, and feel free to ask any questions.
A few cool things about this feeder:
●The printed label on the bottle can easily be removed! This only takes soaking it in apple cider vinegar. I used a pickle jar. Fill the soy sauce bottle with hot water just to keep the label submerged in the vinegar. Next, remove and scrub the print with some synthetic steel wool. It will seem as though it didn't work! Don't worry; soak it again for another two hours. When you remove it this time, the print will rub right off under tap water.
●Baltimore orioles will feed from this! They prefer to have a perch, but they're skillful enough climbers to make use of these feeders as they are. You can also attract these birds with halved oranges or grape jelly. Seems they have a sweet tooth- I mean, beak.
Here's the video about making copper chain:

Thank you for sharing the elaboration of the water trough for the hummingbirds, we have a garden with sabilas (80) and bees, bumble bees and a hummingbird visit us every day, yesterday my wife discovered a tiny nest where a hummingbird is brooding, that makes us very happy , we are going to give a warm welcome to our new tenants, hopefully they will be with us for a long time. Nice idea! My wife is a little miffed though. This homemade design attracts more birds than her store-bought contraption. And hers wont even fit in the dishwasher. I am a little shocked at how violently these little birds fight over the feeder though. You're right... it's best to make several!

Sometimes the homemade items are the most successful. It is surprising how expensive the commercially manufactured feeders cost. I once made a seed feeder for the other birds. I used an empty 2 liter soda bottle upended over a plastic gelatin mold, and connected the two with some wire. The birds really liked it. Later on, I bought a feeder that cost close to $10. I hung it in the same location where the homemade one had been. The visitor census dropped by about 50%.

Going out, RIGHT NOW, and buying 3 bottles of Kikkoman Soy Sauce. That bottle is iconic and I am gutted that I don't already have one in the house. It was designed more than 60 years ago by Kenji Ekuan and hasn't changed one bit since it began production in 1961. THANK YOU for the great hummingbird feeder design. We get few around here (Tampa, FL) and I've planted flowers to encourage more. This will seriously help bolster our hummingbird activity.

I lived in a home in the west suburban village of Westmont Illinois. We bought our house with a large garden. We never knew we had hummingbirds in our area, until I decide to plant about 6, 4 o'clock plants. They have lovely trumpet style flowers that close during the heat of the day but will open when the sun is going down OR in the early morning before the sun gets hot. They release a sweet fragrant aroma that we enjoyed thru our open windows. It was also the invitation that brought us humming birds! Every evening, my husband and I would make a stroll of our ESTATE and we'd see these lovely little creatures all over our plants. It also helped that about 5 yards away, we had a stand of white and lavender Phlox, also an aroma plant they loved. So if you can plant these plants near your feeders, they will attract any hummer that is around. I wish I had known about feeders for them too, I would have gladly attached them to a local tree I had to make them happy. I'm still in the area but in an apartment building for Seniors. I'm getting ready to set out 2 small feeders to see if I can attract hummers. But plants are all important too. So when I get my plants n place, I hope to catch my hummers.

@@Sammy-mp9xn Hi Leah! - Yes, I got 2 adult hummers that were taking turns coming. And then one day, i had a much smaller, slender hummer. It seemed it might be a young adult OR a female. I have my computer within sight of my feeder so on one day, I had 6 visits from the first one that came. Then one day, while I was sitting in my lawn chair on my little patio, reading a book, I spotted SOMETHING out of my right side. When I turned slight to look, it was a HUMMER. I stood perfectly still and it flew right up to my face, about 6 inches away!!! It must have been trying to figure out if I was a giant type of flower .... ha, ha, ha. But then on Sept. 1, the temperature dropped at night to 56, too cold for them. That starts their migration to Mexico and further south in to Honduras and Columbia. I read they can cross the Gulf of Mexico in 20 hours, non stop! They are amazing little birds. I'll take down the feeder in mid September, just in case any of them are still around. Next year, I'm planning to put a second one on a shepherd's hook since I don't have trees. I have enjoyed watching them. One curious fact, they never approached any of my flowers, and I had Bee Balm, petunias, snapdragons and geraniums. But I did see a TON of little bumble bee style bugs that would crawl right in to the flowers. But no hummers. - Thanks for asking. Stay safe.

Please don’t use feeders for hummingbird. Hummingbird is natural. It is nature. Let it be. Please don’t change it’s nature. Please don’t feed them unnatural things. Also please don’t change its natural way of finding its food. Please don’t do anything that changes anything that is naturally going around (also that are natural within you). Don’t encourage petting. Infact discourage petting any animal or bird. Let them be. Don’t feed any natural being with unnatural stuff or even natural stuffs (most of them are genetically modified these days which is causing too many problems to the natural beings’ various systems ranging from digestive system to their cognitive system) which in turn leads to threatening their existence. Let them be. Let’s plant trees everywhere possible. That’s the best thing that we humans can do to animals and birds. 1. Plant trees 2. Reduce plastic garbage. Reuse the plastic bags. 3. Reduce human footprint in forests or natural reserves. Don’t try exploring those places in the name of recreation. Many people throw garbage during these activities which causes harm to their ecosystem. 4. Don’t cut down trees 5. Nurture nature by reducing artificial technologies 6. Save environment 7. Save humans 8. Save the planet 🌏

I made a dozen in February 2022 with 12 gauge copper wire for just under $2.10 each and 10 gauge wire for $2.66 . I put a couple out in my yard and within 2 days I had several little hummers visiting. Now it is June and we have many more birds and sometimes have to change out the feeders daily. Frequently they become impatient and buzz me when I am changing out the feeders. I have gifted many of these to friends and family as well and they have been well received. The feeders are sturdy, aesthetically pleasing, so inexpensive, and hummingbirds really love them! Thank you again.

Super interesting! I've been feeding hummingbirds for over 20 years. This is a great idea. Commercial feeders have become expensive, especially for folks like me on a fixed income. I use the same 4:1 ratio as you. Last year I went through 55 lbs. of sugar. I try to keep 4 feeders out at all times. I used to keep 6 but two deteriorated to the point they were no longer usable. The most hummers I've ever had was approximately 60. I say approximately because they move so fast they're hard to count. I finally stood really still on the porch with my camera to my eye until they settled down and took a photo and counted them that way. Still not accurate. If memory serves correct, that year I used around 65 or 70 lbs of sugar. Keep those good projects coming! I really enjoy both your channels.

There's nothing here in this video that's misleading. The method shown is tested and safe; it's just sugar, water, and glass. *** take a moment to consider what you trust from this ASSHOLE!!! if he gives two shits about weather or not the hummingbirds die then he gives two shits about anything and does not deserve the following!!! weather or not his idea is successful means nothing his response to something that relies on our honesty to keep it alive does!

Just a quick thank you for sharing this. So weird that after we added two of these to the two commercial ones at the back of my house we tripled the amount of hummers we have. Adding two more to the front today. I love these little feeders, thank you so much. UPDATED I can't get over how much the hummers love these feeders. It took mine a while to find them but now when I step out to refill they hover at my elbow (I can feel the breeze from their tiny wings) and jump right at in as soon as I hang it back up. I am never buying a commercial feeder again.

Beautyfull recording of the name giving "humming" sound at the end. Awesome. Here in germany we know them only from books or documentations. I'm a little bit jealous. EDIT: I must correct myself. We have a similar little bird here. Here he is called "Eisvogel" which literally means "Ice bird". The scientific name is "Alcedo atthis" and in English it is known as "common kingfisher".

Robbe902 We also have kingfishers in northern Michigan in the USA. The ‘hummers’ as we nicknamed them, are quite a bit smaller than the kingfisher. They are amazing to watch. They say they come back to the same place every summer. Ours will come and hover by/in our patio doors and ‘look ’ for us, hovering there. That’s when we know it’s time to get the feeders up!😄

Yes! If you're in the U.S. put out a feeder! They are more likely 'rare' in the central portion of the country, but they'll be glad to spot your feeder. Put one out this summer - fall, and then spring for the migration periods. If they spot it they'll be back the next year.

WOW what a perfect project for the Hummers. My contribution to keeping ants out of my feeders is using a dab of Tanglefoot on the hook of my regular feeders. For those not familiar with this product it is basically Pine Tar ( super gooey and thick) which I spread in about a 2" ring around the base of my fruit trees to keep crawling bugs out the trees. Thanks for sharing this awesome re-use of bottles, I do have a couple in my stash that now have a worthy new purpose. I'm a new sub today, Cheers : ))

You Rock!!! No more cheesy expensive feeders !. I live in the high desert in southern Colorado and from late April through early October they wage a territorial war on my feeders. The size is perfect with these smaller bottles too. The larger feeders tend to ferment when they aren't maintained and we don't want a flock of drunkin hummers pokin around after hours. This is the perfect size because when I see one empty I cook up a new batch. No waste, they finish it before it turns into vodka. Just tuggin on your leg ha. Great Idea, Thanks, really thanks. James

I don't think I've ever seen a humming bird in my area. I know there are some varieties that live in Florida, but I think my location might be a bit too urban for them. Now, if you come up with a wild iguana feeder, or a loud neighbor silencing device that won't get the cops involved, that'd be useful here.

I have all the supply’s to make the original one that you posted, I’ve just never been able to drill the glass bottles, definitely going to give this a try tomorrow! Edit: gave it a try and end up making 3 of them, I also really hated the label and found that if you soak a paper towel in apple cider vinegar and wrap it around the bottle and let it sit for a day or two, you are able to wipe the label off, if some is still stuck on wet the bottle and scrape the label with a razor blade
