YOU’RE GREAT SINCE THE OTHER DAY IVE BEEN WATCHING AND I AM NOT THE TYPE TO GIVE IN AND UP. I asked if I should consider a DO/PhD or MD/PhD with b/w 2.8-3.2 GPA and high MCAT score and the amount of discouragement I received. When yet professionals told me to focus on my MCAT. I started reconsidering again and then I realized my God is greater than I am and THIS IS MY DREAM AND IT FEELS LIKE THE RIGHT CYCLE AND THATS MORE OF A FEELING from GOD. Just my faith and here I’ve found your video again more directly on my low GPA issue. 🤷🏽‍♂️ LOVE YOUR PAGE MAN. YOU’LL BE A GREAT PHYSICIAN. I’ve been trying to find a KZfaq video on this, but no one addresses it whatsoever. If you have a horrible community college GPA, but excelled at University, would medical school only focus on the University institution where you got your bachelors? I’m in the same situation.

@@Glodwra What I heard is some schools will look at the last 40 units, while some others will review the last 20 units. Of course, they also take a look at the whole situation include both community college and university performance. Good luck Steven!

@@jeann3860 Yup, you are right. I talked to the school I want to transfer to (USF) and they look at the last four semesters. If we get As, we will be fine. If you have money to splurge and apply to 40 medical schools, and five of them use that method, that's potentially 5 interviews. There is definitely a path forward. :)

KYCOM student here! those stats are right on par with my acceptance lol. I had a 3.38 GPA (AACOMAS bumped it up to a 3.43) and a 506 MCAT. During my interview, they were impressed with my MCAT score and the fact that I kept up with my classes at an SMP. Speaking of SMPs, I have a video about it on my channel. Hopefully, once/if I become more consistent with my youtube channel, I would LOVE to collaborate with you one day.

Thank you for this! I am in my gap year and scheduled to take my MCAT this month. I have over 3,000 clinical hours, 100+ volunteer hours, various leadership roles in college, and have worked part-time since Freshman year. My GPA dropped to about a 3.56 by the time I graduated due to my significant burn-out with all my activities during college. But, I know for a fact I will have strong LOR's from the roles I have been in. I think the admission requirements for medical schools are of course reasonable but, on the other hand, I feel there are many students out there who are considerably strong candidates but their grades/scores hold them back. I will apply to most of these schools!

Mcat and gpa are everything to medical schools unfortunately. The extracurricular stuff becomes important once you prove to schools that your gpa will make them look good.

No you don’t need a 3.8. The average gpa is around 3.6 but many people get in with lower than that

I don't know what to do; my undergraduate school offers medical programs - but none for DO, and the only actual school of osteopathic medicine I can find for my state is over 3 hours away - which is unrealistic for me right now. In your personal and professional opinion, do you think I should invest in a physician's assistant program and later transfer to a DO school? Or is it best to try to go straight through in one go?

That rate is very common for med schools. As a current member of a medical school admissions committee and previous med student OU is not close to being one of the "top" schools in the country. That being said, I tell everyone the best medical school is the one you get into. School rankings are overrated.

I got a direct admit for UIW DO school as long as I keep a 3.5 GPA undergrad and no MCAT required. Should I do this or go to a more prestigious undergraduate school like Baylor (with no direct admit) and take my chances with the MCAT and perhaps keep my options open to MD schools?

Guys, just FYI, if you have a lower sGPA, then you probably got a C- or even a D+ in courses. If you have anything below a C in prerequisite courses, you will automatically get rejected from most of these schools. Only a few schools have no minimum such as NYITCOM and ACOM. If you do have a C- or D+ in gen chem or something, make sure to retake it while you are in undergrad. You premed advisor may tell you to tank the C- in gen chem and get As in organic/upper level sciences to make yourself more impressive or to more effectively improve sGPA. DO NOT follow that advice. You are capping yourself from applying broadly because you just cut yourself off from most DO schools. Additionally, your premed advisor is probably a PhD professor who is not an expert. Find an upperclassman who has been where you are if you are struggling getting into med school for advice. Also, it is in your schools best interest stats wise to get you through their program ASAP, not your actual success outside of college. This can play a factor if they tell you to not retake coursework. Finally, if you do have a C- or struggling through prereq scince courses, you need to fix your studying/mental approach to the topics. If you do not, your gonna get a poor MCAT score too. I suggest taking a break while in school and spend that year self studying for the MCAT. Like just focus on the MCAT casually. This low stress mindset will help you fall in love with the MCAT content to do extremely well and prep you perfectly for remaining coursework when you come back to college!

If I can make an educational comment……..applicants who have a 3.5-3.6 GPA and 507-509 on your MCAT, look at the lower 1/3 tier of MD schools. Their “numbers” are very similar or lower than DO schools. When I was looking at the allopathic (MD) schools’ average GPA’s and MCAT scores of accepted applicants, I was surprised at the “numbers” of their accepted applicants. Look at states that are poorer and more rural……good chances of getting accepted into Kentucky, Alabama, Puerto Rico, West Virginia, Arkansas, some Florida, Michigan and Ohio allopathic medical schools with “numbers” very similar or a bit lower than DO schools. Check them out for yourselves.

Listen to me carefully: do not pay attention to minimums. Pay attention to averages, which rival that of MD schools. DO schools are just as interested in their reputations as they are your money. They look at metrics such as graduation rates, pass rates of COMLEX I, II, III, residency placements in both allopathic and osteopathic programs and so on. Medical schools are more competitive than ever. Don't waste your money thinking that this will be easy. At any school. Unless you are a saint, have committed your entire lives to the practice of medicine. Worked as a volunteer at hospitals, missionary work in third-world countries, worked as an EMT in college when everyone else was getting banged by their girlfriends, then don't even bother. As a DO in practice since 1997, I'm here to tell you...think about PA school. Although, those are competitive as hell, too. Um...maybe just live in your parents' basement until they die? That makes the most business sense. Have I been drinking? Maybe just a little.
