Excel Waterfall Chart from Scratch - This video shows you an easy and flexible method to create the waterfall chart in ANY Excel version.
The reason I call this the most flexible waterfall chart is because you have control over a lot of features that you don’t have control over if you use the new Excel 2016 waterfall chart. For example, you can change the color of the delta bars to whichever color you like, independent of the color scheme. - You can decide where you want to have the data labels, you can include new data series to add your own customization. It also has no problem to show values that go below the horizontal axis, i.e. if you have negative cumulative values.
The data preparation table is also quite simple. This technique does not use the general stacked column chart with invisible base approach, instead it uses error bars and up/down bars to get a very flexible, yet simple waterfall graph.

I just can't thank you enough for this lecture. This is my first time been introduce to the waterfall chart and love them so much. I have on problem with it. I have the start and the end with big number but the bars in between are with a small number. when I made the chart, the bars were too small. I tried to put the lines as a secondary axis but it through off all my chart. Thank you so much.

Hi Leila, love your work! I use the chart to show changes in sales forecast compared to last months forecast. As the month sales become actual there is no change in historical data so I would like to hide those months. Normally you can deselect the months in the select data horizontal axis labels but there are no check boxes? I can hide the rows in the data source which works but the data label values go haywire. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks Leila, in fact it's the Easiest and most flexible waterfall chart that can be built in Excel. Waterfall charts are very usefull because they tell a visual story (Begin, middle,end). One funny thing is that for Cumulative and Datalabel position we choose a "Scatter" chart, after all the formatting they turn out to a "Scatter with straight lines" chart! Why is like that?! You're very welcome. Yes, scatter charts are very flexible because they can be used in so many ways. If you end up getting a scatter chart with straight lines, you can remove the line from the series options...

Could you take this a step further for stacked waterfall charting that includes some negative items? For example, I'd like to bridge net income to adjusted net income (where positive adjustments are partially offset with a negative adjustment for the tax effect), but with each quarter shown individually stacked in the bars of the chart.

Hi Leila, I have tried this and it worked. Thank you! What if in one of the criteria there is a positive & negative contributor and I want to show them both. How does it work? Eg. After the start bar, the "criteria" consists of -50 and +100, so it should go down by 50 and then go up by 100.

But waterfall does not allow for combo chart. I tried with your way of doing waterfall, but again I cannot add a target line as I used the up and down bars. Any advices? Kind regards

Thank you Mark. If you insert a row before the End value, type in the number and drag your formulas down, then it will show in your chart. If you want it all done automatically so that you just add more deltas and everything is updated, you will need to create a data preparation table and use the OFFSET or the INDEX function together with name manger and give each series a name in name manager - then you need to use these names for the chart series. I'm not sure if you're part of my waterfall chart online course, if yes, I'll be adding in a lecture that shows this in the next months....It's more complex to setup but the advantage is that it updates and contracts depending on how many deltas you have.

with this method, you can have two colors - one color for the positive bars and the other for the negative. If you want to color each one separately, it would be best to use stacked charts. If you don't have negative cumulative values it's easy to setup. If you do have negative cumulative values, it takes a bit more data preparation (I cover these in my course).... basically you will need two sets of stacks - one set is to define how the stacks behave if they are on the positive side of the axis and the other set, is to define how they behave if they are on the negative side of the axis - plus you need an invisible base....

Hi Rafael - yes there is. It only really makes sense though if the splits are in the same direction, otherwise it's really difficult for the reader to figure out what's happening. So if you have two positive changes in the same bar or two negative changes in another one - it's easy to read but not one positive and other negative. I have created a template for this which I'm planning to include in my waterfall chart course together with a video on Udemy in June.

Hi, my down bars are calculating correctly and moves the chart according to the value, but the fill on the down bar stays white, doesn't matter if I change the fill color. Can it be because Im working with 2013 excel?

Hi Heinrich - it works the same in Excel 2013. What if you select the Down bars from the chart element drop-down in the chart properties window on the right hand side? - and once you select it from the drop down, go to the format properties and update the fill or directly update fill from the home tab. It should color according to your selection. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work....

Hi Leila, I'm currently taking your Fast Track to Power BI course - is there a way to reproduce this same technique above within a **Power BI** visual? I'm on the April 2024 release of PBI Desktop. I'm trying to represent change within a data set using two different amount fields - the "Start" and "End" columns in your chart in the video would come from my "original amount" column - but to match up with your "Delta" columns between start and end I have a completely different amount field in my data set that would (for each delta #) either add to or subtract from the Start column amount, going left to right. Just wondering if there is a way to do this within PBI; thanks. I love the course by the way - it has really been worth the investment!
