Easiest FLAP sander ever? Hot glue.

This simple to make flap-sander is just some pieces of sandpaper hot-glued to a metal rod. It works surprisingly well, so I made a video about it!
If you don't like the Mr. Rogers jazz, or if you only understand Metric, my level of concern for your difficulty with this video is zero. Try to appreciate the focus here: it's the struggle of sanding, man versus wood. You and I are on the same side.

Hi Pocket.. I'm along time fan of your chanel... Thanks a lot... You just saved my arse.... I live in Mexico and for some strange reason commercial flap sander attachments aren't so popular or easy to get and sometimes online purchases aren't an option due to duty fees and taxes... Awesome idea... Thanks for all the great work and help... Cheers

The thing I like about it is the length of the rod cause the ones you buy are short. And thank you for the tip on the glue for the glue gun going to start using it with mine. Keep up the great videos

I didn't think about it until the end, but considering that in use each flap will overlap the others and limit the usable surface area for each pedal, when it gets really worn out you can just snip them all back a 1/4 inch or two and there should be fresh unused sandpaper underneath. In practice does it end up working that way? If so, then the longer you make each pedal the longer the life of the whole thing? As long as you can just keep trimming it back little by little and there's enough to still make a full circle it should work out, right?

Nice. I would never have thought hot glue would hold up to that.

Maybe it'd be easier to make if you put all the pieces into a round jig? Like a small PVC pipe you just align all the flaps inside overlapping eachother, then pour in some hot glue and stick the rod in all at once? IDK if that would work, though.

This might work with a larger diameter rod an longer pieces of sand paper so it would be like a flex_a- sandi

If it's available to you I think 3d printing a head to hold the sand paper and fit onto the rod might make this easier. Mostly just easier and maybe a bit faster to make, considering only the hand time.

I have made these for years. I just use the cheapest paper available because I have no money to spend, it all works the same, the cheap stuff does not last long though. I have used bamboo skewers and Dollar Tree sandpaper since at least 2015-16. Your methodology is better than mine. I had never thought to jig something up. I personally just cut strips and either A.) lay the entire stack of sandpaper in a row, sand facing down and just glue the entire row before rolling the center spindle down the length of the row, or B.) for smaller diameter spindles I use one longer strip.

Have u thought in making a sponge tipe sander? it would be less agressive than the standar ones and it would be very practical. cheers from Argentina keep the amazing content!

An easier way of gluing would be to get the circumference of the rod, lay out a small strip of tape the length of the circumference and glue a bunch of petals at an angle to the tape so it's linear stacked like /////// and stick the tape to the rod and it will splay out

You recommend hot glue over say, epoxy? I could see that for ease of replacing missing "petals" as you say. Very cool project.

It's just a red incandescent. The older ones are better, since they started using a cheap paint/film for color in the 2000's. LEDs have all but displaced them now, but the old bulbs still cast a nice mood.

That grain pattern is the swirl you get from a side branch. It's that knotty part that's impossible to split. As a spoon, it's quite nice.

Or for the U.S., once the unregulated oligopoly disallows competition to the point where all consumer products become unreasonably priced junk. Maybe we'll just invade you and take your resources to fuel our capital. Then we can sell you some 'affordable' flap sanders, eh comrade?
