This is the easiest and most reliable way to get ethernet in your house across multiple floors! NO RUNNING WIRES NECESSARY! I needed to get ethernet from my basement to my main level, and this was basically the only viable solution because I needed SPEED and RELIABILITY. These bonded MoCA adapters by actiontec can support up to 1Gbps speeds and use your existing coax in your house! I have had ZERO issues and i have IP cameras recording over it 24/7.
If you have any questions let me know.

This is a great DIY video and a good solution when others aren't an option. I did want to point out that putting ethernet over COAX is essentially how networks were designed 25 years ago. It was called thin/thicknet and was essentially a physical bus, i.e. every device in the network tapped into the coax cable at various points creating one large broadcast network. Essentially what this means is that every device that is tapping into the COAX is sharing the available bandwidth and the more devices you have the less efficient the network becomes. So you will never get the 1 Gig of bandwidth to each device simultaneously the way you would home running ethernet cables back to a router and/or a switch. If you have multiple TV's and PC's streaming and gaming simultaneously you will all be sharing the bandwidth. My intent is not to criticize but just to help someone make an informed decision based on his/her bandwidth consumption. Thanks and good luck!

I appreciate you showing this setup with the cable modem from your service provider. This is what I felt I was missing from the MoCA Alliance and Actiontec videos I watched. I needed to know that I could use adapter's TV/STB to go from adapter to cable modem within the same room without replacing my cable modem provided by Spectrum/TWC (who allow MoCA, but don't support MoCA-enabled devices).

Great video. I was about to cut my walls open to run patch cables upstairs from the home router on the ground floor(Virgin Media, UK). I also have three coax wall jacks on all three floors of the house. This will save me a tonne of money. Thanks a lot for the video. I just got my adapters in the other day and will be setting them up today. I got a small form factor Dell Optiplex 7010 with an Intel quad port nic to run PfSense and a Unifi AP Pro for WiFi. I will be setting that up as well and can’t wait to experiment with all the features and plugins. Up until this point we’ve always had the all in one modem/router/ap from Comcast which is lousy and you can’t even do so much as set a custom DNS on it. Never had any Ethernet cabling run in our house but coax out the wazoo so these adapters are ideal although expensive. With all this and my first home server just built it’s like going 0 to 1million with my home networking game. And I got an absolute kick out of the guy saying someone was going to come and run cable from your cable box to their house. The thought of that is hysterical and the odds of someone trying something so obvious is incredibly small.

Yeah almost all houses in North America are wired for coax but they're barely used since some people don't watch cable TV or use cable internet while people who do don't have a TV in every room. When I move to a two story house with little to no CAT jacks, I'll definitely use a MoCA setup for downstairs connections until I learn which walls line up on both floors and run CAT downstairs in those walls.

@@user-hh4hc2lt6e Those are MoCA adapters. And no, you can't expect every coax jack to have internet, especially if you don't have cable internet/TV. You need to check the TV panel and make sure the coax cables in your rooms are all connected via splitter or amplifier. Some technicians connect only one cable so only one room has cable signal. Even if you have cable internet, it doesn't hurt to check the TV panel outside and/or inside your house.

MoCa is a game changer. Quick NOTE: If the modem you're using supports MoCa, you can enable it in the Modem Browser Settings (192.168.0.1 for most, check online for yours) Once enabled, all you need is the Actiontec MoCa Adapter and you can plug that to the Coax Cable, then you can plug an ethernet to the Moca Adapter and plug a Router or computer or whatever you want to the MoCa Adapter using ethernet. 👍😁 gotta love MoCa

you can run IP Cameras over wifi I've been doing it for years with my Hikvision system 7 cameras. You don't need moca for that, it's certainly better but not a requirement. Great job overall though explaining how these work and how to hook them up in laymens terms. I am looking to turn my family room TV, which is where we stream video currently over wifi, into a ethernet connected TV (Via roku)-modem and tv are on opposite ends of a very large house. This was helpful to know whether or not I need one of these. RE: IP cameras you should secure your NVR it's vulnerable in your garage. At least put it in a vandal proof lock box so it's hard to disable it, thats the heart and soul of your security system. I hid mine in my attic behind a locked door and it's hooked directly to a Eero wifi and I haven't had any major issues, small amount of buffer/latency (maybe 1-2 seconds) and thats it. Maybe i should remove the eero and put in a third one of these MOCAs since there is Coax up there.

I know it's not a requirement but an issue with Wi-Fi is where are you going to get the power from? For that reason is why I run the physical cables. It provides my power and data and is more reliable than wifi. Wifi cameras do have their time and place though, but for me if I can run a wire I'm doing it every time!

Then from that place, I put in a PoE switch, which is where I ran the cable for all my cameras and they plugged into the switch. The switch provides the power and data in the Ethernet cable to my device (the camera). The backbone was plugged into the uplink port so that was simply carrying the data to and from

Going through a splitter/amplifier could definitely cause issues, as they're attenuated to focus on a good signal for your TV box. MoCA utilizes the unused freq spectrum that a satellite hookup would, meaning the splitters may not be compatible. There's also the issue of PoE filters. I think you typically want one at the first point the coax enters your home, as well as on any TV cable boxes. Before blaming the splitter/filters, I'd try a direct hookup from the modem to the adapter, over coax.

On the first main adapter. Isn't it slowing down the speed since it's sending speed to the modem while the other end sending it back to the same coxial cable line.
@TheKMZ1
@TheKMZ1 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not fully following you but no there is no speed slowing. How do cable companies send TV/Phone/Internet all through the same coax cable? It's called frequency division multiplexing because they all travel down the coax at different infrequence so they are unaffected by one another. The same might apply to these...they could be operating on a frequency different than everything else.

Would love to see network speed tests with this setup. You're using the coax cable to get internet from the ONTs and then using the same coax cable to share it with the other MoCA adapter. I'm curious if you're hitting the bandwidth limit of the coax.... I know some MoCA adapters claim 2.5GbE, so maybe bandwidth isn't an issues for 1GbE networks.

I moved into a different house so am not using them but in the 3 years I had them, they were amazing. Never had to reset them, they were just one of those things you set once and forget. Gigabit through coax is not an issue, I have not seen any of the newer ones claiming 2.5 GbE through it but that does not surprise me.

One cable goes to modem, other goes to TV box. TV receiver doesn't need a MoCA signal anyways and can be blocked with a POE filter. Easiest way should be to hook up the modem to a splitter where the coax enters your place.

So I have a modem/router box in one from spectrum. It has a coaxial going into it already. Wouldn’t I just need 1 of these boxes and just hook that one downstairs, hook the coaxial into that and then an Ethernet from that into my PC in the basement or do I need 1 upstairs for the modem/router too?? I’m just confused why I need 1 upstairs, is it because the modem is what’s giving me internet so I need to basically send that back into the coaxial? Meaning I would need 2 or is the coaxial originally just giving internet so therefore I only need 1 of these downstairs? Sorry if this is jumbled, this is totally new and I’m tryna understand it better lol
@TheKMZ1

You still need 2, you have one acting as the "source" which think of that as injecting internet onto the coax, and then you need a receiver (or many receivers if you want more) which get the internet. These devices are not modems so yes you still need your modem to decode the internet coming from the cable company. Hope that makes sense

You do need at least 2 to extend the ethernet elsewhere, but if you need to add one more jack elsewhere in the house, you only need 1 more adapter. So if you have internet coming into your basement and want to extend to 2 other rooms in your house, you need a total of 3 MOCA adapters.

To make sure I'm understanding correctly, everything is hooked up to your modem in your basement, which is connected by the first cable being split, and then you're running an ethernet from that modem to a router back to the same splitter (Moca adapter)? Also, sorry if this was mentioned, but that adapter obviously amps the line too right? You seem very picky about reliability and speed, as am I but I just want to double check because my coaxial cables in my house need an amp to get all my upstream channels after being split.
@TheKMZ1
@TheKMZ1 6 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Lee I think you described everything correctly. The modem's Ethernet (WAN) goes into the router and then out of the router it plugs into the moca adapter. As far as the adapter amplifying the line, I've never heard or read of it doing that, so I assume it doesn't amplify it but then again I don't know what all happens inside the black box to make it work.

Interesting question. Maybe this will help. The MoCA adapter just acts as a bridge. Basically it converts Ethernet data into a high frequency signal that coexists with the signals on the same coaxial line (such as television and/or the cable modem down/up streams). It does this back and forth on both ends of any cable segment, which is why you need at least two. At one end, you would connect the coax line to the MoCA adapter, and use its built in coaxial splitter to connect to your cable modem, via a short coax cable. Just like in this video. Now what you want to do next, is use the router/switch portion of your cable "modem" all-in-one to connect to the same MoCA adapter via an Ethernet cable. I see why you find this confusing. It's because you're thinking of the physical cable (the coax cable) as being "reused" in a loop, and perhaps causing a network loop issue. However, I don't see why it wouldn't work, since the MoCA "network". although using the same physical cable, is separate logically due to its different frequency band. Think of it as using a separate wire instead, even though it isn't. However, I wouldn't do this if I didn't need to use the built in switch of a modem/router/switch unit, especially if the extra devices aren't in the same room where the cable modem already is. If they are, then I _would._ In my case, I may actually do this, sort of. Although my cable modem is separate from my router/switch, I will probably connect the MoCA adapter's Ethernet port to a switch port directly on my router, or at least the next switch over. But honestly it really doesn't matter. As I said, it just operates as a bridge.

No, the first adapter gets internet from the router. You don't have to have a cable internet provider at all for these to work, it uses the coax to transmit the signal to your remote rooms in your house. So your modem and router work the same way they always do, these get the signal from the router, transmits it over coax and then your other moca adapters can decode/get the ethernet off the coax line
