That new variety sugarcane had two patches of red. That could be a type of mole that will sap your sugar canes sweetness. I planted a few not knowing then and end up with scurrany sugar cane not that sweet So to be on the safe side cut it off and plant it separately.

Yea that would work. But it seam like a lot of extra work. On the farm I have cane that been replanted 3 generations. Not the cane my family's generations. All we ever did was make rows lay the cane down cover it and it came up. North fl. Also you can get different verities here by going to uf agg. Center in quincy they have sugercane days in November. So check with local county agg. Agents to see if y'all have something like it.

you know what I've been doing a lot of research and ppl think that its best to start them out in water, then you can transfer them to the ground...it's better to do it your way ant the plant grows faster and they root quicker too. I was wrong sorry.

It has to do with how young that section is. If you look at a whole cane, the higher towards the top, the thinner the cane and the closer the nodes. The bottom is very thick and has long gaps between nodes. The upper bits are younger and usually not as sweet, thus they make for better propagating.

where did you get the cane you thought was so good at 7:00. I just moved down here and have a hard time finding ANY fresh fruit, farmer's stands, ANY thing! When I lived here 30 years ago I existed on farmer's stands, now I have to buy my groceries twice a week at stores that have their fruits and veggies shipped from other countries. Where did the farmer's stands and farmer's market's go?? I live in Bonita Springs

Ruth, I got the purple cane from a neighbor. the green/yellow varieties came from a farmer's market down on Pine Island, near the Cape Coral area of the gulf coast of Florida. I find that farmer's markets are a good source of cane starts. Local organic gardening clubs or permaculture groups could also be a good source, but they can be hard to contact unless you just show up at one of their events and ask questions.

Hi Sean. I have the purple/red variety that I got from a neighbor. It is very soft for chewing. I also have a green variety that I suspect originated in Hawaii or Mexico and I'm not sure what type it is. I have a couple of other varieties, purple and yellow, that I'm not too happy with. I've never heard of "giant home green." I'll have to look that up. There are some e-bay sellers for cane starts. Might want to check them out if you've not yet done so.

What if you submerge the entire cane coz only those joints under the water had developed roots so that every node can be planted individually the same time?
@floridabeachhunter
@floridabeachhunter 6 жыл бұрын
That works. I've seen people lay the canes down flat in a tray with water so all the joints sprout roots.

@floridabeachhunter
@floridabeachhunter 19 күн бұрын
Depends. If you are in the moist tropics with good soil, yes. If you are in Florida like I am with dry sandy soil, you'll have much better success by rooting it first to give it a head start.

In zone 9 or 10 you might be successful. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_the_United_Kingdom#/media/File:UK_zonemap.png Anywhere else you'd need some way to protect the cane from the cold.

I'm in Hampshire, UK (the south of England too) and have recently germinated some seeds of sugar cane. Plants racing away, about 10" tall now after only a fortnight or so. I don't suppose it's a frost hardy plant, but will bring them in before the cold weather starts and put them in a south facing window. They've got a few months before then, so will see how they do.

Dr. Stubbs, generally no. But you might have some luck in a sheltered location if you start it indoors early. I'm not sure if it would get big enough to yield a sweet cane.

My local grocery sell sugarcane but the eye buds have been removed by shaving but the joints still make roots. Will the cane form new buds to replace the ones removed by the grower or seller? If anyone knows the answer I’ll be happy to know.
@floridabeachhunter
@floridabeachhunter 6 жыл бұрын
I think as long as the cane will still grow roots it can generate a new bud. When I plant a cane, it usually has one or two buds, but once it forms plenty of roots, it often sends up five or six more buds that were not visible on the cane. Give it a try!

What's the best kind of soil for sugar cane and banana ? I live in Central Florida...
@cubaniton74
@cubaniton74 5 жыл бұрын
You can dig a hole in the ground, around 6 feet in diameter and about 1 to 1.5 foot deep (concave in shape), and plant banana trees around the circumference of the hole, two or three feet apart from each other, while at the same time, compost any and all organic waste you might have leftover casting it inside the hole, also water the hole once a week until water begins to pool a bit, for the banana tree roots to have a drink too. All that compost material will in time, be great fertilizer for the banana plants. Bananas like potassium, so put in the hole all the banana peels, and banana tree chunks left over after the main banana plant gives its bananas and then dies.
