Brian and Jason are no strangers to the Internet, but they've spent their entire lives floating on the surface web. Today, however, they glimpse the depths of the hidden deep web, and subsequently the dark web.
Hey don't do crimes. I guess we have to say that just about every episode these days, but for real.

There is some truly deplorable stuff out there in the shady corners of the dark web, not to mention plenty of scams and honeypots. That said, most of that kind of stuff exists out on the surface web as well, so its presence alone shouldn't inherently demonize the legal and practical use of deep web.
To be clear, we're not technology professionals here at modern rogue. We try our best to give accurate information, but something's bound to be a little off with technical topics. Grain of salt, all that.

I know this wasn't the point, but I really like how they brought up that this sort of thing can actually protect people. When you think deep web or dark web, you think "Oh that's all for criminal activity". I never even considered that this could be a way for someone in a bad situation (abuse, stalkers, really scary political environments) to do normal or necessary things without fear of being punished for it. Came here for funnsies, did not expect enlightenment.

Exactly! Everyone is so afraid of the Deep Web all because of the "ghost stories" of shady stuff. Despite the fact that there are plenty of sites on the surface web that are no different than the hidden ones.

It is often used by whistleblowers, journalists, and government agencies on a frequent basis. Plus in those sort of situations where you are being stalked it can be a huge help. Especially if you're being stalked/abused by someone more tech savy than you something like tails can give you that anonymity you need to get out and get help.

please note: its still dangerous! 5-6 years ago, when i was new with the deep web thing, i didnt have any idea how to keep privacy whatsoever on the deep web. resulting in an IP hack and burning down pc's. ofc taking off the power would fix that part and we used some modules to make a new pc after but still, rip 1500 euros/3 pc's. first of all: your location is not known but your area is, revealing too much info about your pc enables well informed hackers who you are, where you are, your house number, your names, even passwords and such. to prevent this you should not use your standard internet on full mb/s but cap it. dont set your screen to fullscreen while on the deep/dark web, dont watch any videos(if you rlly want to see a video, download it and play it while your internet is down, still risky tho, most virusses are brought with videos), dont open pictures as they sometimes set your screen to full screen and some tells the person on the other side what video card ur using which again is dangerous. ofc theres alot more but i dont feel like typing any more :3

One thing to note - when you read the IP address from that search result, it wasn't your IP. It was the IP address of the googlebot which indexed that link originally.

You provided a pretty basic primer, discussed the topic beyond the normal boundary of "BUY DRUGS LOL" and even touched on some of the first-timer issues (namely, speed) that people would inevitably not know going in. Downloaded from Firefox AND Torrent, however when trying to locate the tails iso, nothing matches for search (browse)......I am pretty much stuck where the 3 minute mark of video is. As far as I know, Deep Web is the unindexed internet; you private ftp, you cloud storage, private message boards, admin panels, etc. Stuff you can't access directly, hidden behind logins. Dark Web is the tor web, since it is dark to any one on a regular network. Also, I have run live linux distros off 2GB flash drives. They were originally designed to run off CDs, so you can still find some that are 700MB or less

It's not because of police or governments it's because of hackers, your loaction is hidden but the area isn't.. So they do have a brief understanding of where you could be, when you go fullscreen they can calculate shit and do some wizard stuff to find out your address and things.

For Windows 8 turn the computer off, plug in the usb and then turn it back on. Try to avoid plugging the live usb into a running system as it could corrupt the whole thing. Once the computer is up and running again you don't even have to log in. Just right click on the power button icon from the log in screen and hold shift while you click restart. A new screen will show up and you just need to find the option there to boot to the USB. Bonus feature is once you are booted into tails you can access and transfer files from the windows operating system :O Remember how you didn't even need credentials for the windows 8 system from before? This is why it's important to set a bios password if you are worried about people having physical access to your machine, if you regularly travel with a company laptop for example.

Wouldn't the activation of a Wifi signal to boot up applications on Tails totally negate trackable information if someone [like the FBI or any other government affiliate] tried to crack into your computer?

Strictly speaking, you don't want to set a computer in the BIOS to boot to the USB first, unless you have to. Most BIOSes will give you an option to CHOOSE a boot option at runtime, either by going through the BIOS and picking it for a one-time boot, or by holding some key combination before the OS loads to select a boot device. Doing this gives you plausible deniability versus having your first boot option set to a USB stick, which is inherently suspicious.

What if you have monitoring software on the parent computer? I don't. My friend and I are arguing about this because we both know someone who DOES have monitoring software on his computer. My friend is saying that the software installed on his computer would still track the goings-on because it's still using the parent computer. But I am arguing that it's only using the hardware of the parent computer. Our friend's software is on the hard drive, and more specifically, if the hard drive were partitioned and a second Windows installed on it, the software wouldn't be able to monitor the second install of Windows. The thumb drive acts as a second hard drive which means that it's even more insane to think his software could monitor what you're doing on this thumb drive. Neither of us are experts but I'm pretty sure I'm the correct one...right? EDIT: No, we aren't thinking about getting him a means of bypassing his monitoring. It was just a thought exercise. And no, I won't reveal why my friend is being monitored. It isn't relevant to the scenario.

Tracking software would not carry over to tails, because it only runs things off of the flash drive. Hardware trackers such as a USB keylogger that goes between the keyboard plug and the PC would still work.

One thing to mention about TOR is that when you use it, your computer can become the endpoint for ransom requests and traffic is routed through your machine. So that guy watching evil stuff may route through your computer to do it. Government agencies do track this information - while they haven't cracked tor yet (that we know) they do watch tor endpoints. So you may be involving yourself in some things you don't want to be involved in by using it. Yes, they may only track you back to your ip and not put your fingers on the keys.. But still, don't think that the government doesn't track the ips and physical locations I'm addresses using tor.

Well, getting anonymity on the internet is a lot harder than simply downloading and using an inkognito web browser or full OS. These are only tools that may help you gain privacy. But in order to gain privacy, you need to think differently and act differently. Pretty much don't make yourself stand out. That's what most people forget when you say internet privacy and anomymity. And that's how criminals are getting caught in networks like Tor.

Just a little extra information, onion links are still URLs since URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator and is a subset of URIs, and all conforms to this syntax: scheme:[//[user:password@]host[:port]][/]path[?query][#fragment] (source: wikipedia) The only real difference is the TLD (top level domain) which is ".onion" and you could make a DNS server let you know where a .onion page points to, they just don't do it by default.

you don't even need tor to bypass china's censorship, any vpn will work and so many people use them in china that it would be too hard to track down and stop every single person who does. Plus I don't think it's illegal to use a vpn or proxy anywhere in the world wince there are other uses besides bypassing firewalls
