I just happened upon your channel. I watched your video on how to make the copper connections and then this video on how to Tin the connections. Watching this brought back memories of the years I worked in hot dip galvanizing. It's a similar process, we used Ammonium Chloride for our fluxing agent. Thanks for sharing this video, it and the other video showing how to make the copper connections was very informative. I'm a new subscriber. Stan

Check out electroplating with nickel and chrome...electro deposit of metals on cathode in solutions used to be wide scale bit produce hazardous chemicals.

Electroplating zinc is better for electrical contacts. Nickel's not a bad second choice. Chrome has good corrosion resistance but it has higher electrical resistance as well. Zinc plated onto copper becomes brass, which is what most of the prongs for electrical outlets are made of, for good reason.

Nicely done. Had a couple questions: 1) Can I use pure tin instead? 2) I have a specific need to coat just the outside of the copper lug and keep the interior (where the copper wire would go) untouched by tin. Is there anything you could think of to plug the hole and still withstand that temperature?

Congrats on the CNBC thing. I think I will order one of those solder pots. I have a bunch of low melting point metals (gallium, lead, bismuth, indium, etc) I hate taking a torch too. I also picked up 2 1lbs rolls of kester 62/36/2 silver bearing solder. EDIT: Ordered, Thanks for the coupon code.

What if you just used soldering techniques for copper pipe? I would probably lead to a less desirable, blobby look, but may be an option to those without a solder pot.

If you want to get your copper bright and shiny without scrubbing mix up a solution of 16oz water 2oz hydrogen peroxide and 1oz citric acid and just drop your pieces in there to soak and they will come out looking brand new

Hi Nick. I'm not sure, my friend owned a scrap metal business, he gave it to me. You can use a roll of 95/5 plumbing solder.

hey how about a method for nickel plating them instead of tinning? tin tends to tarnish and forme a kind of crust or something that looks like dirt mixed with grease or something. Also nickel remains shiny even after handling it bare handed. I know this can be done electrochemically but i dont see many videos on the topic

Nickel has a very high melting point, you would need a furnace. Electroplating is the best way. :-)

electronicsNmore yeah, it's even higher than steel's. Electroplating is the only way i know of, unless there's a way to plate it using nickel dust and a flame or something. Like how they do to "fill" grooves in steel pieces before rectifying/machining them.

I was wondering, if using this technique to solder lugs and 0 or double 0 cable, could you get away with not crimping, using the solder to hold the wire to the lug only? I think it would work. I'm trying to be a tight arse here 🤣

Maybe you should solder the wire in, its more reliable by bigger wires than crimping, thumbs up :)

I usually do that, but when the cable is a fine strand and tinned, crimping works well.

Seriously did you test yourself for heavy metals? since melting all those heavy metals can give you high amounts of lead and bismuth. So many do not take precautions and don't ask what is the dangerous o doing it but wonder only fi they can do it since many get loaded with heavy metals. I think you should test yourself which costs $60 to see. Take care

I'm fine. There are no lead vapors UNLESS you overheat the lead. The flux fumes are probably worse. The key is good ventilation and being upwind. I have done Cilantro and EDTA capsule detox treatments in the past. My blood work is fine. Thanks for your concern!

Can you make a video on safety and detox? I think your viewers will appreciate it. Also how long did you do the detox? And to make the cilantro more effective one has to take chlorella to absorb the heavy metal when the cilantro helps flush it out. I think chlorella first and then 30 min later cilantro. Besides all that keep up the good work. Thanks

While this may seem like a good idea, it really isn't. Solder is way more malleable than copper. The reason the bare lug grips so well onto the cable when crimped is because copper has just the right balance of malleability for it. When you cover the inside of the lug with solder you decrease the grip strength from the crimp due to the solder deforming inside. It's exactly the same reason you don't tin wire that you want to secure in a screw terminal, because they tend to slip out. This is another example of someone sharing bad advice on KZfaq because they don't have enough knowledge of a subject to know any better.
