Canon recently released a new software called the EOS Webcam Utility Beta. The software allows you to hold video calls/conferences with your Canon DSLR/mirrorless camera via just a simple USB connection. Simple Plug and Play. In the past, the mere thought of setting up a livestream with a DSLR camera was quite overwhelming. You needed to have a camera with a clean HDMI video output. You also had to consider getting an HDMI video capture card. Now, not anymore.
All you need to get this done is a supported Canon DSLR camera, a USB cable (micro USB or Type C or mini USB; depending on your camera) and a Windows PC (Canon is currently working on the Mac Version, so stay tuned Mac users). So far, from my tests, it works quite well with Zoom and Google Hangouts. Research also shows that it works with OBS and the Skype app when downloaded from browser.
In this video, I used the Canon M50 and a Surface Pro 4 laptop to carry out the test and show the results.

YES. THANK YOU. You are just about the only source that's told me the main EOS Utility interferes with the Webcam. I've tried over and over re-installing, and that single small two-click turn off fixed everything.

It's me again! I just tested this further using 2 separate computers. One computer in my office "hosted" the Zoom call and the recording. The second computer (a Mac) is in my studio with the Canon camera and I brought my voiceover microphone to the Studio/Mac to get a good sound. After starting the Zoom call & recording on the PC in the office, I went to the studio and got the Zoom "call" pulled up on the Mac with the Canon connected. The tricky part with the Mac is that, unlike a PC, it doesn't have the partially-hidden tools that you show between 4:20 and 4:26. Or if the Mac does have that, I don't know where it is. So I kept opening the EOS Utility pop-up window and clicking "Quit" in the lower right corner of the pop-up window until it all finally cooperated and used the Canon as the webcam as I expected.

Hello. About 5 minutes before you sent this message, what you said regarding the canon eos utility app last time came to mind and I was just reflecting on it and then boom, this new message of yours came in. What a coincidence. Anyways, I see you’re doing a lot of experimenting and all, trying to see how you can get the most out of the software, exploring to see if the software has more to offer and figuring out solutions to problems you encounter along the way. @@ShotByChuka Yes, and thinking about how bad it would be if I hadn't been testing the set-up and had been on a live call with that EOS screen showing. I don't know what I did to get it to finally appear properly. I'm going to need to switch out the computers and ensure the PC does it correctly right off the bat.

Yes I can. And the cool thing is that for some Sony cameras such as the Sony ZV-E10, you don’t need to download any software to be able to use the camera for video calling. It’s literally plug and play. And you can also use the Sony camera for FaceTime video calls. This is so helpful! It's been 2 years or so since I've tested this. The non-intuitive steps that I forget are what you covered from 4:12 to 4:36. If I didn't do that, the Zoom screen showed the Canon EOS Webcam Utility gray screen. I finally turned the camera off & on again so that I could get the EOS Utility pop-up screen on the computer and then close the pop-up. The other tricky part is the microphone. The external mic I use for the camera for filming wouldn't work as audio for the Zoom call. I had to plug in a different external mic I use on a different computer when I do voiceovers. And I was using a Mac. Fortunately, I have two Mac USB adapters - one to connect the Canon camera and the second to connect the external microphone. I also recorded the test Zoom call to ensure I was getting a good quality video and good quality audio. I'm certain I'll come back to your video a few times - every time I forget how to set this up. Thx for your help!

Canon is pretty smart. I am buying an M50 just for this very reason. If Nikon and other manufacturers had this kind of software I would be looking at their cameras too. But as far as I know, only Canon has created software this easy to use. It will be interesting to see what comments I get about my video quality at my next Zoom meeting.

I can't say for certain because I havent used it for live streaming for that long before. The maximum amount of time I've used it in the past should be about 2 hours and it didn't overheat.

Thankyou for the video. It was helpful. I have M50 too. Can you help me understand how long can the camera last on video calls on a full battery? I had to take an hour long session. Was wondering if M50 can shoot that long. Thanks

Yes the M50 can shoot for that long. As long as its fully charged before the video call. I've used it for an hour 30mins session before and it worked fine.

Hi, I downloaded the last version of EOS Webcam Utility for mac. I tried to setup my canon M50 as webcam with OBS, when I add the Canon as "video capture device", OBS gaves me the maximum preset 1280x720. I think there is a limit the Webcam Utility. And if I would like to record with obs and my canon a video in 4k I need an external capture video divices? Thank you

I liked your video because it was concise and actually showed me how to use my canon m50 as a webcam on zoom. Your's is the first I've viewed that helped me do it. Thanks so much. I do have a question however. What about audio, it seems that the audio won't work through the camera, so do i need a microphone connected to my computer. I'm using a desktop computer not a laptop that usually has a built in microphone. Any clarification on this would be appreciated.

You're welcome. Glad my video was able to help you. Yes, audio won't work through the camera. If you're going to use an external microphone, you're going to have to connect it to your desktop computer, not the camera. In my case, I use a Boya By-m1 lavalier microphone which I insert into the headphone Jack of my laptop.

hey mate, does the camera battery keep charging at the same time as it is connected to laptop? I am worried about camea abttery for conferences of 2 hrs

No it won't be charging. Camera battery should last up to 2 hours if fully charged just before you start the conference. I've used it for a 90minutes meeting before without it dying. Have a spare battery lying around just incase so that you can quickly switch if need be.

Unfortunately, your camera is not among the cameras that can make use of the Canon webcam software.

I am using Canon SX540HS. There are no available utilities. I bought HDMI Video capture device, but still not working. All I see on zoom/obs is a blank/rainbow screen, however I am able to access any media saved on the camera and display on zoom/obs, but without the actual live camera. How can I solve this? Are there alternate or universal utilities for this camera?

Question. I have the 5D Mark IV I got it working with Zoom finally but my problem is, the auto focus won't work. I am using the camera to broadcast my daughter's 1st bday to our family back east. So I'll be moving it around and wont be stationary. (I have various lenses but will using the 24-105) So I'll be moving, zooming but when it Zoom, it won't focus unless I do it manually. Any tips?

Are use the new Web utility by Cannon and got that working fine opens of you find her I’m shooting in live mode it just won’t do the auto focus when you move the camera around and it looks at things close or far away. Played around with the focus settings like AI servo things like that and again it worked fine when you’re not in zoom but when you’re in Zoom it just doesn’t read that function.

@@ShotByChuka Just found the issue (trick?) I was letting Zoom put the camera into live Mode/Movie mode (hearing the mirror click into the up position) without turning the selector switch on the camera. That's why the auto focus wasn't working !!! All you have to do is just turn the live mode/movie mode selector switch on camera either before you start a meeting or even after starting the meeting. So Zoom can still active the live mode/movie mode on the camera, but to get auto focus you have to turn the selector switch on the camera to live mode/movie mode. Then you also see the output on the back camera display and auto focus works !! Hope I explained that clearly. :) Feel free to pass this on if anyone else has this problem.

@@ShotByChuka Canon EOS M50 I think its same as yours. The there download software for EOS Webcam Utility 1.1 Windows 11/11/20 4.36 MB. I will download this one and try because now its changed the site not like before. I think this is the latest update. I also have windowns 10 PRO I managed to download it all its diferent than yours because its not asking to restart there is a sound that it got detected by its not showing down thats its been recognized but now the webcam lcd it shows like laptop sign not sure :( but hey when i opened zoom its connected :) maybe the new update or my pc auto detected. finally my dream came true thanks Chuka I am now gonna get chroma key background cuz i dont like when I use background still not 100% proper background cutting :S I would like to invite you in my sharer in business talk if ur free :) I will be sharing my success story in phililippines through zoom. its all perfect but I am not sure why the mic of the camera which i put as vlogger its not picking and only mic condenser is working. Its not recording. I just put the camera on video mode without hitting the record button. So the 30 minutes record time limit doesn't count.

My M50 works with Zoom but how did you get the menu working for manual adjustments while the camera is connected to the PC? I have a PC icon on the camera screen and am locked out of the menu.. Thanks in advance!

You're welcome. Lets solve this problem together okay. What shooting mode do you put your camera on when its connected to your camera. Manual exposure? Video mode? Aperture priority?

It is on the list. Canon 1300D is known as the Canon T6 in North America. Select the Canon T6 option and see if it works out

Hello. Ensure you close the EOS utility app as it will interfere with the EOS webcam utility software if you don't and prevent you from being able to use you camera as a webcam. I spoke about how to properly close the EOS utility app in this video.
