This video features an easy mod for the East German Assault Pack. By adding LC1 straps from an ALICE pack, it greatly improves the carrying of this bag for day hikes, overnighters and more. I cover the East German camo and do a gear layout to show what can be carried in the pack.

I’ve used the pack for many years. I also have the grenade pouch. I use the pouch on my belt. I like the Strichtarn. It is distinct but more subtle compared to other camo patterns

Right on. I really enjoyed the video. I've got an East German pack and grenade pouch and the Ak47 4 cell ammo pouch. I use the Ak47 mag pouch for my Ruger 1022 25rd mags. It holds 5 like it was made for them. I've been working on a daytrip/ scouting rucksack. I like it because it's small and hard to over pack. I think it weighs around 15-18lbs. I riveted the original straps on. I have everything I need for a nice day hike or a unplanned overnight in the woods. I highly recommend getting one if you don't have one. Multi purposes and very inexpensive. Keep it up. Your doing stuff most people don't even think about doing. Rock on brother!

SuperIain13 thanks brother. Appreciate it. I haven’t checked out the Ak pouch yet. The gas mask bag is cool. They are killer little bags for a good price. Cheers

For woodscraft and all around camping I really prefer the European military surplus. Well made. Very inexpensive and multi function. And the mess kits actually work for cooking in the woods.

Nice mod to the pack! That's one advantage to inexpensive surplus gear is it lends itself to modification and even mix n match with other gear.

I'm starting to use this equipment with packs, clothes, etc. Because, in a woodland environment it is excellent. Runs parallel to trees of all sizes ie. Vertical growth. Thanks for making the video. Good idea with Alice pack straps it would certainly help reduce weight.

You get a lot of miles out of that pack. It looks like what I wish the bread bags were.....a little bigger. I'm gonna look into one.

Tramontane They are great little bags. Starting to prefer the idea of a light pack to a haversack
@tramontane3239
@tramontane3239 4 жыл бұрын
Haversack are ok for level ground, but once it gets to two feet two handed hiking-climbing then those haversack bags get in the way. They fall forward and obstruct the knees from full range of motion, on 45 degree inclines, mountain transversing they drag the ground because hiking position is very close to being on all fours.

I see a lot of Outdoor adventurers videos with all their expensive gear. Military surplus is the cheapest and easiest way to go. All the experimenting has been done for you. It's especially great if you mix surplus gear from different countries. I have a Swiss LK35, the polish poncho, German cook kit. I also have the old tried and true Alice pack, Dutch stainless cook kit, us army pup tent halves, German ground cover. I have some gear from Swiss, German, U.S., Dutch, Polish, Austrian, all surplus. My wife hates to go out into the garage. This stuff will last for YEARS. My grandkids will get it when Im gone.

Surplus is awesome. There is a store in my home town that has incredible deals on old school surplus. For the first couple years of having this channel, all my gear was old surplus and DIY stuff that I made. I have been fortunate enough to get to review some newer surplus, after building my channel up on the older gear. Its been pretty cool seeing the evolution of the gear. I definitely have come to appreciate both the old and the new.

Yeah, this pack is so cool. I got one after seeing your video and it's probably one of my better gear for art of woods now. I attached it on a Alice frame and there is enough place under the bag to place a bedroll like wool blanket+ plash palatka (or a sleeping bag in a dry bag for very cold raiding). Inside it it's ok to put some tools, a correct Cook kit, an insulate mat and a Space blanket, and some food. and for the moment I haven't even used the attachment systems on the outside and I haven't attached any pouches either, which means that with a sufficiently ergonomic carrying system like the frame you can leave for several days!

Nice! Been thinking of picking up one of these for awhile. Does yours have a PVC waterproof lining in it or some kind of treatment to the fabric? And the camo is Strichtarn AKA raindrop. Flecktarn is the mottled dot one thats still used by the current Bundeswehr. Also those are LC-2 straps. The single webbing on the top of the strap that connects towards the frame is a dead giveaway as the LC-1s had two webbing straps in a V fashion on it and LC-1s only had 1 quick release which was on the left side. The padding on them extended under the webbing that held on the buckle/quick release section and also they were less padded than LC-2s. They're getting hard to find along with the LC-1 kidney pad because Ghost Buster fans of all people are buying them up and paying collector prices for them.

This came right up when I searched for ideas on the East German pack I recently obtained. Never even thought about Alice straps. BTW, isn't this camo termed Strichtarn?
@EnduranceRoom
@EnduranceRoom 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, indeed, strichtarn. The ALICE straps are nice on it, but the stock straps do work really well with a belt. I have an older overnight video using the pack with the stock straps and did a horseshoe carry, shelter and blankets on outside of pack. Carries exceptionally well like that.
