The tradition of guards stationed at the Neue Wache is a long standing German tradition that has spanned over 80 years, under multiple different regimes. From the Reichswehr, to the Wehrmacht, to the Volksarmee and finally today's Bundeswehr.

This goosestep looks more closely related to the Wehrmacht era because the late 1970’s (to 1989) East German Neue Wache drill march is much slower and the legs kick much higher.

early era? the hand doesnt move as high as late era. I personally take this drill the best verion, the hand tidened but doesnt wave as high as in soviet drills, and of course the goose step is absolutely amazing.

and, the nva parade formation uses soviet style (a tight square line without people carrying swords in the far right row) with a prussian goose step(the feet are lifted first before walking, unlike the soviets where the feet have to take a step as far as possible) even though the hands are soviet style (first row formation when nva carries daggers(?) when they haven't done a salute (I don't know what's the name) to the honecker f:goose step nva is getting lower every year

I'm not sure I recalled this correctly but there was speak of abolishing the Prussian style marching and going full Soviet but the German military leaders said that the German march music was too fast for Soviet/Russian style marches.

@@MaximusandHistory awww I wish there had been the military band. We got to the Neu Wache just prior to the guard changing. We went inside to take a look. Then outside they marched along from inside a big old building, and conducted the guard change. Their build & the smartness of their uniforms were what really impressed me. The precision of their drill was impeccable. And I distinctly remember thinking(as just a wee lad) are these the type of men we will have to fight 🤣 It wasn’t a confident thought

I remember in September 1989,then DDR leader Eric Honnecker flew to Peking seeking for help from communist China. At that time then Chinese communist Supreme leader "Deng Xiaopong" greeted Honnecker and promised to provide financial help to East Germany, China was very difficult at that time but Deng still attempted to help a remote communist brother. But soon after a few days after that trip when Honnecker was fired by the party and Krenz taken over, DDR fallen suddenly in October and the rest of the history we all known.... If Honnecker seek help from China two months earlier, the DDR could be saved. It was that Gorbachev, the traitor leaded to all the tragedies in Eastern Europe and Russia, he betrayed DDR !
