My mom was born in 1925, she is still strong in her age. The film was made in 1937 or 82 years ago, so I think some of the children in the footage may still be alive. Love from Thailand.

Brings tears. It's a meeting of two oceans vastly different East and west. Yet the human condition persists. This is what I love about India. There is a timelessness in whatever we do which connects us to the beggining of time. It continues till today.

Shocked to see some Ill informed comments below. And absolutely amused to see a comment stating progress was changing from dhothi to pants LOL. All the poverty being shown was the result of 150 years of British rule. The region of India produced more than 20% of world GDP around 1700s around the time the European looters landed

+Shadegat3 They gave us a global interconnection and the english language, good education system, roads, railways and most importantly, it is from them we learnt of democracy. What is the point of having so much money if it lies in the gold chairs of emperors, when the roads from their castles suck cock. I'd rather we lose most of India's wealth and we have something useful in return, than have a lot of gold piles sitting around in the possession of a greedy king.

80sROCKKKKK Damn good reply!! Have you heard of the "Peacock Throne" ? I totally hear you. India has been but raped by it's own leaders and today, people like Tata are still doing it to the poor. Fook them! I will be in India again early next month and i will help the poor with money, help with education in rural areas and they in turn will give me emotion, kindness and love. I have always loved India for as long as i can remember. I have an Affinity with it. The best we can do is try to offset the damage the rich are doing to the poor. I hope to one day live there and contribute greater. Until then, i give nothing to the West except to my close friends only. Peace to you. I wish great power to be with you, too.

I think this same guy also narrated all the WW2 propaganda films. Interesting when he said, "In this war-torn world, there are few happy places like this left.". This was filmed in 1937, before the outbreak of WW2. He then goes on to say how 300 years ago, the Dutch 'owned' Ceylon. Really? How the Hell can someone step into a long occupied nation and simply claim it as their own, yet call these 'happy people' the uncivilized ones?

I see a lot of comments running down the British, under this video. Some people have been bragging about how rich and prosperous India used to be before the British arrived and drained of its wealth. A few questions for these ranters: 1 Did any of us Indians of that time ever make such informative films or documentaries. Yes we produced films on mythology and romance and so on. But what about travel films, news documentaries, cultural and educational productions - anything to match this video we have just seen. Has an Indian prior to the 1940s produced the like? 2 Have we any histories other than epics and panegyrics and the like dating from the earliest times? Do we have any objective records and chronicles relating the events and happenings of bygone kings and bygone eras in Indian history other than records of achievements inscribed on monuments and temples and the like? In fact the first people who took our history seriously were the British themselves and pioneering historians like James Grant Duff, Henry Beveridge, James Tod to name a few authored books on different aspects of our history many of which continue to be authoritative reference guides today. 3 Yes - India used to be rich and prosperous but how much of this wealth was shared by the common man? Most of it was concentrated in the hands of kings and rulers. The life of the peasant was always wretched and poverty stricken during the Middle ages (insufficient data available before that time) prior to the arrival of the British; it improved slightly after the British arrived because they systematized revenue collections in the lands they ruled directly. Let's face it. The British conquered us because we deserved to be conquered - in fact we invited conquest with open arms not just by the British but by a succession of races before them - the Turks, the Pathans, the Mongols and so on. Mahmud of Ghazni looted so much treasure from the temples of India that the total value has never been computed but would probably rival what the British sucked out over 2 centuries. After Mahmud came Taimur Lang and Nadir Shah but wheras these invaders only stole the British took but gave something back - they left a strong administration, a healthy infrastructure, law and order, suppressed customs like Sati and Thuggee and so on and above all they left behind a conception of India as a political unity which was never there before. So please don't rant and rave against the British without taking consideration of their achievements and legacies.

It is what it is... We neither have to appreciate nor blame the English.. Let us relish and appreciate our identity through this video. We’ve been called Losers, poor, illiterate and many more, but we should realise that this is how we have been brainwashed to self-shame our own past.. Looking at my fore runners, I only see that whether poor or rich, ignorant or smart, they all are happy. Remember, happy faces come from self content, self content comes from self-respect, self respect comes from self-appreciation. It’s unfortunate that we don’t acknowledge their self-appreciation, but rather pay attention to what the English narrator had to say about our nation/home. Let us look back to relive our past in free India. Life is not for the rich nor you need to be rich to live the life of our elder generations 👍🏼 வாழ்க பாரதம் (Jai Hind)!

@@sunandan0 Correct, but blaming the past doesn't help either. All people responsible for the past crimes are dead. Hundreds of years ago.. dead! All the things happened. It cannot be changed. What can be achieved by looking for justice from dead people? Live now. Forget the past. It is useless to blame dead generations. Maybe karma will give justice. Personally, I believe bad people prosper. Never any justice in this world. Sir.

@@neilwoodward7336 It helps to learn from history because we dont want a repeat of what happened. Preserving the good & bad of British raj history will help future gen avoid the mistakes which led to a weak India

@@sunandan0 I hear you and agree with you. But all things will repeat. Nobody in power will ever stop their pursuit of money. Normal people can complain until the world explodes. But powerful people always win. 😭 It is a sad fact my friend.
