This reply is a year late, I know, but I think the whole point of Michelle's first scenes was that they were supposed to leave you guessing who she might be until the moment Sharon calls her by her name. Since the face wasn't recognisable, there had to be a scene "introducing" the character by having someone mention their name. It only made sense to have some ambiguous build-up because it makes the surprise of finding out that it's a character with a history coming back to the show all the better.

It’s a shame it just couldn’t work. Not the actress’s fault just that Sue Tully was Michelle and no one else could play her. Shame she’s moved on

If they have a reason to bring them back then they should go for it. Recasting always works best in soap. Though it only works for some characters.

@@franciscondon1902 preach! Michelle hasn't been in the show for 20 years, why should it matter if they recast her or not, especially as the original actress retired from acting. The character still had (and HAS) a lot of mileage left in this soap, so recasting was a necessity. I think people would have better accepted the recast if she was involved in a more juicy storyline (e.g. discussing her son's paternity with Grant!).

There is definitely something going on. The dead voice of a person murdered from the show who was obsessed with George Michael was playing, then less than 12 hours later George Michael died. Considering it takes 6 weeks for an EastEnders script to go into production. The BBC has to okay the copyright and pay royalties before they can play "Last Christmas" from Wham. It shows how BBC government have used predictive programming to cement the hoax death of a popstar into the minds of the British public. So I would say CERN affected.
