I wouldn't call it a hardman rivalry or "the most iconic rivalry in EastEnders". Granted Phil Mitchell is no stranger to having the best feuds yet. Dirty Den + Steve Owen + Dan Sullivan + Johnny Allen + Dennis Rickman are all particularly perfect for hardman/gangland rivalries. Phil's rivalry with Max Branning is more of a "business territorial conflict", yet an interesting one because both are bald bad boys to the core. It's a business conflict/rivalry that gradually develops into an all-out feud between the two rivals ever since Phil found out about Max's tryst with Lucy Beale and the death of Max's police lover Emma in which he wrongly blamed Phil for despite the fact that Nick Cotton was responsible for her death. Either way, what started out as a potential acquaintanceship and mutual kind of friendship between them from 2007 onwards despite the pair falling out over a few problems had steadily developed into a hostile feud between them. Max Branning is one of the greatest personal enemies that Phil Mitchell has made over the years. Both are bold as brass and portray themselves as legitimate businessmen despite the fact that both tend to resort to illicit standards to satisfy their own lifestyle prospects. Phil Mitchell is the top dog of Albert Square, and Max Branning is just another list of his most intense competitors to date.
