I loved this version but I think the problem people had with it was that it didn't fit in with the working class eastend London that the show was trying to represent. Pity really, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks have never been afraid to update it's theme over the years.

luvhart To most people, myself included, this was an abomination. You're right, I'm not sure why some themes are okay to alter, whilst Eastenders isn't. But it isn't, and that's that. It was horrifying.

I don't think it's dislike was generally down to the working class weekend, it was a modern take on the EastEnders theme tune for the 1990s. It fit with many pop songs of the time and there was a song called "I'll always believe in you" which like many 1990s songs made no sense and was just a load of words and sayings to fit the tune. The dislike would be due to people not liking change. EastEnders at the time got viewers in the tens of millions, the original theme tune was much loved and the areal view of the Thames with light blue water was iconic but changing it to green and altering the theme tune of a much loved soap opening and closing credits caused dislike of it. I would assume there was a new producer appointed and they wanted to change things. In the TV industry it can be bitchy and many times when there are people who want to express their ideas they are set up to fail either by given the right to make changes with a much loved programme such as EastEnders but also programmes like The Bill and Gladiators and losing them viewers or by blowing the budget and making the programme too expensive. It is then held against them if they choose to say they could improve other programmes.

I can appreciate it now but the first time our family saw and heard the new credits/theme, it really left us scratching our heads, as though the BBC had put the wrong music on. It just felt like too much change too fast.

This kinda reminds me when Americans in my country got mad when Days of our Lives updated their famous hour glass tune in 2004. And I really liked it because that old theme hadn’t changed but only twice in it’s 55 year history. 1993 is the same year as here that people wanted the 2004 theme switched back. They switched it back bc fan uproar.

The Thames is a more natural colour in these titles. The current ones have it far too blue.

Did every episode that used this jazzy theme include the middle segment (0:59)? Same goes for the original 1985 theme/titles too. Cuz since the 1994 theme, episodes have mostly played the short version over the credits with some occasionally playing the full version. Presumably this was either cuz of the episode runtime or the number of cast members featured in the episode.
