By the time the enemy got to the phalanx, a good chunk of their forces would be dead and would be forced to retreat if not attack with a reduced army. Even if the enemy knew of the trenches, its still a no man's land and the defenders can pick at them wile comfortable to rest or even wait for reinforcements. Siege warfare is amazing.

Britain has never fought alone. We kept the local tribes leaders in power almost as a puppet. We policed and made sure tribes kept from attacking each other and causing unrest and generally kept everyone inline. India wasn’t a country like it is now with just one government power.
