Amongst the impending national lockdown, we have some positive news to share... say hello to handsome eastern bongo, Ali.
The male six-year old bongo joined us last Friday (29th October) from Knowsley Safari. He was introduced to resident female bongo Azizi on Monday (2nd November) and the initial meeting went really well. His move to the zoo is part of the EEP conservation breeding programme for this Critically Endangered species, so we have our fingers crossed for the pitter-patter of tiny bongo hooves in the future!
Bongos are characterised by a striking reddish-brown coat, black and white markings, white-yellow stripes and long slightly spiralled horns. Bongos are the only tragelaphid in which both sexes have horns. They have a complex social interaction and are found in African dense forest mosaics.
