The eastern indigo snake (Drymarchon couperi) is North America's king cobra. These snakes are giant, beautiful, intelligent, super snakes. An absolute legend. And yet in most ways, they make a far more reasonable pet than do king cobras. I guess that isn't saying much. So is the eastern indigo a good pet? And is it the best pet snake for you?

@@ClintsReptiles I think you need to address the differences between what you reported in your video, vs the many owners here that believe you overstated the "poop" issue and as a result were a bit miserly on the "handling" score". Otherwise; love your videos and am a fan.

@@Jerry9s Have to agree, to be honest. Especially considering Clint has a False Water Cobra, which are arguably just as well-known for their feces and just their overall messy nature... Maybe bias as well as the high cost and limited availability of the Eastern Indigo was influencing his opinion without him realising? Either way, it was still a great video and showcase of this awesome animal. So much so that this is the first result you get when typing, "indigo snake," or any other similar wording or phrasing in the KZfaq search bar. That says a lot.

It's quite difficult to handle my Aunt and Uncle's Florida King Snake. When ever I do with them around, he just kind of slithers on me while desperately trying to inch himself to his owners, preferably my aunt. Some say snakes can't bond with their owners, but I think otherwise.

Someone once told me the best thing about radiators is they don't catch things on fire. I later learned that's not true but at the time I thought it was so funny, like how bad does something have to be that the best thing about it is that it doesn't catch random things on fire? Unrelated but made me think of it.

My great grandma had one of these snakes living behind her house for many, many years (she lived in the middle of no where until moving in with my family a couple years ago). She would see him every couple days usually, and whenever we visited she would tell us all about him. At first she seemed very scared of it given the size, but eventually she saw him as a neighbor of sorts! I don't know if he's still living there, but I like to think he's still around.

As a person who had a deep fear of snakes as a child, this channel has really gotten me to understand and appreciate these beautiful animals more. Clint’s infectious enthusiasm and compassion for them really helped bridge the gap for me. You’re lucky to have them at all. They are extremely endangered. Hardly any left in Alabama. They were once thought completely extirpated from the state. Personally I don’t really like that people are breeding these in captivity for profit when wild populations are at risk and struggling so badly. Just my opinion though, not trying to go on a screed or anything
@mattslev
@mattslev 3 жыл бұрын
@@Glassandcandy The captive-breeding of eastern indigo snakes by private keepers has no impact whatsoever--neither negative nor positive--on the wild population. Those snakes are from animals that were in private collections before the species was listed as threatened in 1979, and for a variety of reasons the offspring should never be released into the wild. Unfortunately for the captive population, the gene pool is growing shallow because no new blood has been introduced for decades, at least not legally. However, scientifically managed breeding programs are reintroducing eastern indigos into areas where they've been extirpated in the wild, so far in southeast Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Eastern indigos are vanishing in the wild are entirely because of human impacts related to habitat destruction from development, road mortality, pesticides and herbicides, and wanton killings. A few may get poached occasionally for the pet trade by unscrupulous individuals, but that number is negligible in comparison.

There was a breeding pair on the property where I grew up. One about seven foot the other about 9. I handled them throughout my life from about 8 till 18 when I left. Just relaxed snakes would just hang out and warm up on me during cool early spring mornings. They were almost always around the same area on the property. Just touching them after a few years and they just relaxed and were happy to be handled. Being on the river they kept the moccasin population down and we never saw a rattle snake. Lots of mutual respect. That and crows I raised one that fell from the nest it came around with his family for something like 15 years would yell at my window for me to come out. Hop on my shoulder and clean my hair. Eventually he got his mate to do the same. I miss country life.

Wow it sounds like WE were very fortunate! We had these guys living on our property for years (until we sold the residence in fact they may STILL be there). We had at least a dozen of them maybe more. Plenty of food around for them obviously (they are NOT particular!). nope no cages for us. they'd come up on our porch (especially in the winter) to get warmed up and eventually learned to crawl up on our laps and would not move. What awesome snakes they are. oh.. they never pooped on us or made ANY attempt to bite us. Remember that these snakes will only bite in defense so as long as you handle them gently and are not aggressive they absolutely would never bite because of course YOU are not food to them. Always handle them as these keepers are doing... with open hands.

I once went to this thing called Zoo school when I was in 4th grade, it was hosted by a animal rescue that got funds as a traveling zoo, they had everything from armadillo, to Bob cat's, to a eastern indigo snake, and come the end of the year each of us took two animals, reaserched them, and showed them to preschoolers live, handling them as we taught them what we had learned. I almost did the indigo snake but since it was in shed I opted for the combo of three toed box turtle and ball python. The turtle pooped Every time I put it down as I'd lead when picking it up and the ball python had a unhealthy obsession with my armpit, and I will NEVER forget that day, heck that year. Mainly thought to say this due to the indigo snake but yeah. If anyone out there has a similar situation and a kid who loves animals I highly advise letting them take it, it really is amazing to have that kind of hands on learning and even better to share it with others..... They get to live like wild snakes but with a safe home and free food

i watched this whole video in agonizing suspense waiting for "the poop". ...what a dissapointment. But still - such an awesome snake! One thing i'd like to see Clint touch on a little more for the audience is what he brings up at 8:54 - Some ppl who may be more inclined to buy exotic pets might think that permits & regulations are just tedious & unecessary bureaucracy. But educating viewers about these regulations help them realize that not only are these practices good for the species, but also human health/safety & the environment. Keep up the great work Clint!

Hi Clint! I just wanted to let you know that I am a soon to be high school art teacher, and that your channel has inspired me so much! I plan to house a few reptiles in the classroom to show the students how beautiful these creatures are and hopefully they'll get some artistic inspiration from them as well! I am already planning out a giant day gecko enclosure😊 Positive vibes from illinois!!❤

Nothing takes my breath away like a healthy adult indigo. Just incredible. This snake is the reason that false water cobras and cribos are at the top of my list; if it wasn't for me living in Florida and the cost, this would be my number one.

Beautiful snake. When I was a kid, we had a huge Eastern indigo living under a portable at my school and a trapper came out and removed it. It would run around the school grounds at times and we would watch and were just amazed. The coolest looking North American snake for sure.

Clint, this is your best video yet(imho). I'm in awe of the beautiful gentle giants. Just as you introduced Apeb he turned around to face the camera! That's priceless. "I'm ready for my closeup Mr. Laidlaw". Looking at his intelligent gaze, it would be impossible to not form a bond with this amazing creature. It appears Eastern Indigo snakes actually enjoy being handled.

When I was around 5, I had an encounter with a wild one of these. It apparently lived beneath our porch, and one day as I was about to take my first step onto that porch, it rose up between the boards around 3 feet in front of me to a height of around 2.5 feet, nearly straight up. We both spotted each other and froze for several seconds, before it retreated. I was very cautious climbing those steps after that. I was scared of snakes for a long time after that, until I got to hold a very gentle snake at a school field trip.

I have lived in South Florida and I have only seen in the wild and that was in the wood behind my home around 1970. That area is now all built up. That is why they are now super protected in Florida but the real issue is habitat destruction. I hope I get to see one of them again in the wild.

Hey Clint! I absolutely LOVE watching your videos. I soak up everything you say, and it's great when you can learn and laugh at the same time. 😊 I was wondering if you could do a video on Viper Boas? I absolutely love them, and like the Eastern Indigo, it's a snake that resembles another snake, kinda, that I dare not own, lol. I deploy in April, but when I return, I have a friend who is breeding them. I don't want an import. I think it'd be amazing if you could do a video on them - I'll be one of THE first to watch!
