You are going to learn how to identify the CALLS, SOUNDS, and HOOTS of an Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio).
Please make sure to "like" this ID video and SUBSCRIBE to ‪@BirdWatchingHQ‬. Check out the LIVE bird and animal cameras streaming from my backyard.
These are the TWO common sounds that Eastern Screech-Owls make:
00:17 SOUND #1:
Their most common noise is an eerie, even-pitched trill, which is often called a tremolo. The tremolo is used by mated pairs during the breeding season to stay in contact.
Males and females are often heard singing this call back and forth, both day and night. This purring trill typically lasts between 3-5 seconds and contains about 35 notes.
00:49 SOUND #2:
The second sound that Eastern Screech-owls make is a shrill, descending whinny. The whinny is used to defend territories. It normally lasts between .5 to 2 seconds long.
Many people think this call is similar to the sound of a miniature horse! While it’s possible to hear these owls during the day, The BEST time to hear them calling is at night.
01:23 Many times, you will hear the tremolo (sound #1), and the whinny (sound #2) sang one after the other.

I first learned what Screech Owls sound like when I was camping out in the horse pasture at age 6. Unbeknownst to me, there was a little fellow in the branches of the Apple tree over my sleeping bag. He decided to introduce himself with a loud whinny just as I was dozing off. I discovered how to levitate...

last night was woken up at 4am to a Great horned owl. Then the resident screech owls joined in. I didn't get back to sleep for another hour or so haha. Was very tired. I love sleeping with the windows open because the dry heat from hvac makes me feel awful sometimes, and owls can REALLY sing they're a hoot. and WILL keep you up.

This is so interesting Wesley !!! I'm over here in accomack. I've been here 6 yrs . Ive only one screech owl on my Virginia bird list and it was here couple yrs ago at most. Only had it on my Maryland list once and that was heard only. I just got the whinnying calls tonight here. Bout half hour after dark. Went out to plug the yard light in. Decided to leave it off in case it could distract the owl from more calling. I'm now sitting here hoping for more calls!

My son and I were just walking through a dark wooded area near our house and we heard a horse like animal sound. It was getting closer and we couldn't see anything on the ground with our flashlights. We now know that it was an Eastern screech owl flying above our heads. Thank you for making the video of the two types of sound these amazing creatures make. ❤️

Daughter and I were hiking in the dark without light on Camels Hump Mountain in Vermont. We sat on a log reflecting on our predicament when just above us a screech owl called with that twittering sound. It was amazing in the utter total darkness. A few moments later my family were YOOO - HOO-ing far off on the trail to let us know they were coming --- I'll never forget that owl telling us, " don't worry, they're coming."

In rural southwestern Virginia, the owls live in the wooded hollows surrounded by open pastures. Usually I'll hear a couple of them chatting back and forth on summer evenings, normally the "whinny" sound, which sounds like a soft, descending whistle in the distance. (This video was the first time I've heard a distinct close-up version of the calls!) Several years ago, a strange owl came through one night... No idea what kind, but it was raucous and LOUD (like a hoot owl on steroids: whoHOO-whoHOO-whoHOO-whoHOOHOOHOOHOOoooo...) That strange owl set off all the dogs in our area, as well as at least a dozen screech owls! I didn't know we had so many screech owls, since I'd normally just hear a couple at a time. But man!!!! They ALL went off! The strange owl passed through and didn't return (thank goodness -- who could possibly sleep through that racket??!), and we were left with just the soft calls of the hoot owls and whistling whinnies of the screech owls. 😺🦉

I have been hearing this the hour after sunset. We live in an urban neighborhood in SE Michigan that has huge old trees. Just like sound #2: The Whinny in the video. It really wasn't loud at all! I was surprised to see 3 tiny owls perched up in the tree right above me. This morning about 6:45 again went out and another or same one was perched on an iron chair not 10 feet away. He didn't move but just watched us. I backed into house not wanting to disturb him. What a thrill. It was dark and we were not aware he was so close. Some bird dogs I own......Standard Poodles.

I have heard odd low-pitched trilling sound from one of the trees in my back yard for the past 3 weeks from 2-3am. Many horror movies use eastern screech owl calls in the background sound. Glad to know this was a peaceful little bird & not some carnivorous beast. Thank you! lol

I just heard one while I was taking the trash out to the garage. We live way out in the "boonies" in SW Pennsylvania. He/she was making both sounds a very short distance away. I've also heard a Great Horned Owl, and saw one just after dark as it silently glided about 10 feet over my head. It was awesome!!

I was sitting in my sun room playing on my ipad and I heard a screech owl. First time I ever heard one in Tampa, Florida - I didn’t think they lived here. But I played him this recording and he would match it. So cool! I thought he may come over but he never did (could have been a she). Update: I played it the next day and the owl did come near. They are much smaller than I thought - maybe the size of a dove. And they are not very loud - when I first heard him I thought he was maybe 500 feet away, behind a neighbors house, but he was really maybe 50 feet away. Update 2: a year later. Saturday 27-Apr-2024 @ 6:00 AM (still dark outside) - heard the owl again first time this year. Maybe it’s the start of their mating season? I played the video again and it responded. Then I thought I better not or he’ll think there’s a potential mate around and won’t leave :)

I wanna play an owl sound to try to attract one, but I heard that it's not good to play calls because it confuses and interrupts birds. I also just don't want to scare them! Especially because I have house sparrows living with new chicks in my shed around 100 feet away. Any bird lovers know if it would be okay to play or not??

Here in Western North Carolina I hear these lovely birds early in the pre-dawn. Heard one just yesterday. So sweet. I would love to see one, but probably never will.

One leaves just outside our house on a dead tree I was about to cut down. Now I won’t , I enjoy the late evening miniature horse like sound. So peculiar and makes me feel we are doing something god on our naturalist like farm in Selma NC. Despite having 3 dogs 2 cats 6 peacocks and countless chickens. The kids running and making noises, yet we are fortunate to love nature!

Finally figured out what makes these noises at night!! Last night I was patrolling my chicken coops around midnight and a screech owl flew above my head and landed in a branch next to me. Thank you for posting the audio recordings.

Love the tremolo call. We have a few in the local conservation area but I have only seen, not heard them. Seems backwards as I'd expect to hear not see them more often! Thanks for sharing.

Love the Whinny sound. Have only heard not seen! Sure are cute though, must paint one! Believe one was nesting in neighbour's garage, mate calling too, outside Montreal, 🇨🇦! Just read about the various eye colours amongst 🦉, seems the lighter eyed as these tend to hunt in more light than darker eyed, nocturnal. Yet most of these comments are about Eastern Screech owls heard at night!

I'm in the northwest, right on the border of Idaho and Oregon, but we've had at least one of these little darlings just going off for the past few nights.

Thank you. I just finished reading "Alfie and Me" and though I have never seen an owl I have always been fascinated by them.

Awesome sound, I love to listen to them. The first time my wife went night fishing she was terrified of the screech owl sounds. Great video😁😁

Thank you! Came here to identify an animal noise I was hearing in the evening hours that was new to me. I appreciate that by simply wording I was brought here and the screech owl has been identified!

Finally the proper sounds I hear at night in summer in northern NJ. First time I heard them was super late night/early morn, like 2AM, and had just gotten home with the convertible, shut the car off and heard at least 3 of these in different parts of our neighborhood/woods. GOD was it scary, but awesome at the same time.

Wow...I got up at 3.30 AM...balcony faces woods ....I am pretty sure I heard a loud screech...then a warbling ghostly sound...but each with long spaces of silence between sounds ...I think this is it! I'm in central NJ

I heard this sound out side just now so I looked up this video and was playing it out loud to double check that it was a screech owl and the the screech owl irl flew right into the shop I'm in. Really cute little birds.
