In today's video I share some health-related things where there seem to be differences in thinking between the Far East and the West! Most of this is generally from my own experience and shouldn't be taken as 100% factual!
How do we think differently about: the relationship between temperature and good health; hot and cold drinks; Chinese medicine; food; vitamins and face-mask wearing? And how are these beliefs changing? Let me know in the comments!

I am a Taiwanese living in the United States. I started a vegetable and herb garden when the pandemic started. Since then, I found that the West actually has a rich heritage of herbs that are rather different from the Chinese ones. I have sage, lovage, summer savory, yarrow, American dittany, Yaupon holly in my garden. I never knew about any of these when I was in Taiwan. I think it is a shame that the West are forgetting its own herbal traditions.

Very nicely done. Appreciate the thorough walk-thru on stuff I’ve been going around and around with my mom for years, especially the food and temperature. This helps me understand the Chinese perspective quite a bit even though I can’t completely wrap my mind around it. Side bar. I have a friend from Worthing and you sound just like him. Now I know why….. And you should do a video on the different accents in England at some point. That would be a fun one.

As a medical student both majoring in modern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine in Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, there are truly many differences between the concept of staying healthy in Chinese medicine and western one. Our goal is to learn and realize how to combine their similarities between them with their distinctives maintained. Maybe there are still many stuff in TCM cannot be verified, we are trying hard to research the mechanisms of them and use them to give patients more choices if needed. Thanks for your introduction

FYI - acupuncture has been very popular in many cities in the US since the insurance companies started accepting acupuncture treatments in their policies in 1996. Although not yet scientifically proven, acupuncture is believed to be an effective alternative to conventional medicine in treating certain health conditions such as digestive problems, migraines, chronic back pain, etc. Good to know that acupuncture has been getting more acceptance in the UK. I am curious if it is also the case for the rest of Europe.

Hi Susie, you look great in the video! Actually I believe there's a scientific reason to keep warm to avoid catching a cold. Our immune system gets weaker when temperature gets lower. That's why we catch cold easier in winter. Also, it's an immune response when you have fever, your body needs to raise temperature to improve your immune system to fight virus/bacteria or any other harmful conditions.

Okay, for the temperature part, I think I can provide a different perspective. The biggest difference between East and West isn't much in the culture, there are some, but mostly it is in the geolocation and weather pattern itself. Why? The temperature gap (highest vs lowest) temperature in US is much larger than in country like Taiwan, a tropical island. Human body adapts to the environment takes time, after I came from Taiwan to US like 4-5 years, EVERY TIME I went back to Taiwan during the winter time, between December -January, I don't wear as much clothes as Taiwanese people on the street. Heck, I even sweat a lot when I walked from my parents home to Metro station while others wearing jackets on the street and I can just wear a T-shirt because my body generates so much heat because and I believe my body is already accustomed to the dry and large temperature gap environment. It's same shock when I first came to US and see people wearing shorts running outside when there were lots of snow everywhere. 😅 BTW, that "bright orange" color you mentioned is mostly coming from the Vitamin C that your body don't need or can't absorb therefore being naturally ejected by your body. 😅

Hi Susie. We say congee instead of porridge for 粥. I've seen the Chinese medical professional for many years. In Chinese health concepts, we say the digestive system is the main factor of keeping yourself healthy. If I'ven't mistaken, hot food and drinks can keep your digestive system in good condition because our body temperature has to be kept in 37 degree Celsius. When you eat some cold food and take cold drinks, it can be a burden to your digestive system because it takes more energy to digest them. The body will become weak with not enough energy so people will feel tired very easily. Having sunshine is good for health not just because it makes you feel happy but also get your blood circulation functioning well in higher temperature. With good blood circulation you have more energy. That's why keeping warm is a very important concept to Chinese. This is the concept of 'damp濕' as well as yin'dark陰' and yang'bright陽' in Chinese health theory and you can figure it out in detail. Also, it's so important to have blood circulation especially to women having periods because women lose a lot of blood and it makes the blood circulation not in good condition. And '當歸Angelica' is a common Chinese herb used to heal the women in periods because it faculitates the blood circulation. But not all people can stand it and some may faint after taking it so it depends on their body condition that needs to be examined by the Chinese medicine professionals. Ginger is commonly used because it can heal the cold in many cases as it moistens your throat. For example, so many Chinese add ginger with honey in hot water(薑蜜) when they feel their throats are dry because they know they can catch cold easily with dry throats. Sometimes Chinese eat congee when they are not feeling well with their stomach because it's usually hot with lots of carbohydrates and not irritative to your digestive system. When Chinese have problems with your digestive system, we lose a lot of carbohydrates so congee is a good source of energy and patients usually eat congee in the morning in the hospitals in Hong Kong but of course the nutritionists will calculate the intake of nutrition according to their health conditions.

@HRWU
@HRWU Жыл бұрын

I think "vegan", or "vegetarian" is also a good topic between East and West. By the way, I guess the Westerns' red blood cells, in average, are higher than Easterns. That's part of the resons and moreover, “陰陽”的概念也在養生,飲食當中,my Chinese medical teacher told me in winter time it's fine to take some Ice cream while in summer ice cream is not ok for our bodies.

I didn’t really trust Chinese medicine along with me growing up. But one thing changed my thought, I used to have very bad stomach (has pain, vomit at least once a week), my mom took me to a Chinese medicine clinic which was famous at my city. Their service was not good but after I drank that dark thick stuff from boiling at least 15 different herbs, my stomach just recovered magically…even I don’t trust it totally but I have respect for it as it saved me at that time from dark uncomfortable days

It is not the same for everyone, but I know cold water is not good for my body. When I am on my period, cold water either makes my stomach hurt, or results in uncomfortable heavy flow. Warm water soothes pretty much everything. I used to take supplements, but now I just eat healthy and try to get the different kinds of nutrients from natural food. I don't know why I think taking vitamins/medicine long term is going to just diminish their effects.

An issue associated with temperature is female clothing, especially towards how much a woman reveals herself. Some Asian grandmas & aunts think shoulders (tank top, non V neck type) & / or stomach (crop top, not standalone sports bra) are too much for day to day clothes. On the alternative medicine, dry needling (乾針) & cupping (拔罐) have made its way to the west in lieu of acupuncture. The former 2 are less known to target pain. It rests between regular massages & traditional western medicine / acupuncture.

western old herbal medicine shares the similar principle with Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese at a much higher level. except many people don't know. good things have been forgotten. that's all. what you know about western medicine is very limited, only about now. most people do. but when you look at the past of western medicine(herbal part), you won't feel Chinese medicine is not scientific.

I've been living in UK for over 30 years, and after so many years of comparing Chinese and British people life styles, habits and opinions towards these things, and especially after I watched some BBC documentaries about Chinese medicine, alternative medicines and experiments on a lot of topics, theories in programs such "Trust me I am a doctor", etc these 10, 15 years, I have totally changed my mind from a deep believer of Chinese medicine to a total non-believer. A lot of our opinions or habits are actually quite harmful, such as keeping warm when you have a fever (老人家在小孩发烧时怕摄风把他们包得严严实实的); and some are unnecessary such as 坐月子, I've seen my daughter's school friend's mum walking and sitting in her own garden lawn with her new born who is only a few day old. Forbidding a woman from taking a showing for a month after giving a baby's birth is just bull shit; and lying down and not doing exercises in a month is bad for their health too. A lot of Chinese people believe many Western women have arthritis, swollen feet or other women illnesses in their old ages because they did not 坐月子 or they did not keep their legs warm when they were young. I heard this kind of opinion 30 years ago and used to believe it, but I have to say I was wrong as people with a bit of Science or Statistics concepts will know it cannot be true, and you can easily find out the truth by searching the internet nowadays; however there are still loads of people believe in this false statement. Sorry I have written so long about these differences between Chinese and Western people, probably it's because I can't find places to express my views on these things😊; and these kind of topics sometimes cause a lot of arguments in friends or family circles, so we often avoid discussing I have seen some comments here already arguing that Western and Eastern people got different qualities and adaptations, bla bla bla, so I probably should stop here. Thanks again for this good video which expresses your opinions on these kind of things.

Totally agree, Chinese medicines didn't go through clinical trials at all, full of bs to be honest. 坐月子 also, quite well received by Chinese without any scientific evidence.

little house on the prairie you don't need to be a doctor to know a lot. when reading books, you can find some hints easily. or talk to old people.
