In this video, Jason goes over the step-by-step process for creating a bonsai from a 1 gallon Juniper (Juniper procumbens nana) nursery stock. Jason goes over the techniques such as cleaning, branch selection, and pruning. He discusses the thought process on designing the tree at each step and how to approach nursery stock.

Just came across this video. This is a great example of how to break it down and explain to us newbies what we're looking at. Most of the videos out there teaching bonsai show the artist cutting and clipping but not really telling us why s/he is doing so. They use lingo like "first branch" and "second directional branch" but they don't really explain what all that means and how they come to make those decisions. Here, you start by showing us the simple but very necessary step of cleaning up the undersides of these branches before we even make any cutting decisions... it's that level of show and tell that helps someone like me who's only been doing this for a few months. Kudos, and thank you! I have 5 nanas in pots (three 5" and two 6") and this takes away some of the intimidation that keeps me from really diving into them. Thanks again! And well done :-)

Your work is amazing. What's are things we need to keep in mind for the first pruning and potting of Nana? Can we do pruning and potting at the same time for a first time styling of a Nana? Do we need to prune roots also when we prune the top? When is the best time to work on a Nana?

I like what you did with the tree. I think it looks great. But one question. The branch that you jinned… if you were taking a longer term view of the outcome of the tree, would you have left the branch as it was as a sacrifice branch for 2-3 years to thicken the base of the tree more, then jin it? Just curious. Thanks for a very informative video!
@easternleaf
@easternleaf 4 жыл бұрын
Good point Bob! That would be a good option if you planned on holding onto this one for a while or putting it in a bigger. However, I'd probably go hunting for material that has a bigger base already to save some time. I'm probably going to pot this little guy some time in February. Thanks for watching!

This is amazing. I would have been afraid to take so much away, for the plant's health, and not only is the end result beautiful, but you seem very confident with what you're doing. I've really wanted to start, for years now, but there's just so much information and terminology. I've kept gardens and have grown plants in a very detail-oriented way, but I feel like if I make a mistake in bonsai I'll have to live with it for quite a long time, when compared to other plants. Do you have any advice for this? Any resources, things that are important to focus on as a beginner, or things not to worry about too much? Thank you!

@@Dybs_ Second this, bonsai is a slow process so more trees will give you something to work on more frequently and not put you in a situation were you end up overworking you tree.

I know you were wanting to produce a "finished" looking tree in one go, but I would have probably left that bottom branch on as a sacrificial branch to fatten the base of the trunk and taken it off in a couple years after a little more trunk taper was established.
