The quote ( If you want something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.) so in order to achieve new or different results, one must be willing to step out of there comfort zone and take new actions. Change and growth often requires trying new approaches or taking risk. Great video and content.

This comment doesn't necessarily apply completely to your point of scaled business but it's similar advice you could give towards the hobbyist or new, small firewood business person. In past videos over the years you mentioned guys are beating each other to the bottom selling firewood, which is absolutely true. What they don't do is exactly what you're talking about: knowing money. If you aren't even making minimum wage per sale, or close to it, why bother selling? Yes, the local market comes into play, no doubt. But at what point does your market tell you NOT to sell? I'm a pickup truck, saw, and splitter guy as example. I process from the woodlot to rack, usually for myself, but I do sell at times. It takes me roughly 12 hours in total to do the whole process, but varies some. Say I sell 1/3 of a cord for $100; 100/12 hrs of work= $8.33 an hour. In Ohio, 12.90 is the current min wage... I would find something else before consistently selling 1/3 of a cord for $100, plus all the actual work put in and fuel/equipment costs. You would have to be retired and/or set financially for life to keep doing that. Sell for much less and its almost charity work. Gotta know your basic numbers!

I had ro learn to charge for my work. I was so worried about the customers who did not have the money to spend that I did not charge what I really needed to. Then one of my customers told me, that I could not provide quality service to a customer if I was not in business, so undercharging is not doing anybody a favor in the end. I started charging what I thought I am actually worth, and it changed my business.

I’ve been manufacturing and selling rifle slings professionally as a side business while also being in a cop for the last 26 years. I make my money from my business and do my job out of Love. The one thing I always tell people that start a business is that you’re not going to make money for the first five years Typically unless you have a product that no one can live without, but you have to work and be willing to work for free for the first decade plus until your business is self-sustaining and don’t give up. And over the past 26 years about a dozen people that I have given advice to on that Topic are no longer in business because they give up. They don’t see the instant profits that they were led to believe they would see so my advice is the same as Andrew’s but I will add you have to be willing to work for free to your business to point where it self sustaining, and willing to continue on even though you’re not making any money for a decade.

Very wise advice Andrew. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished.. I forget the statistics but it’s like only 7% of business make it.. I personally know one guy who tried 8 times to start a business and the one he did make it with he learned after the 7th one just exactly what you saying.. Lots of people told him. But he had to learn it himself.. hahahahah. It was his Pride that got in the way.. Thanks for sharing Cheers

Recently retired from the rehab, refit, repurpose field of building construction, both residential and commercial. I found my 4 years of formal business accounting an essential asset. Self discipline is key. Do ALL book work and billing first thing in the morning when you are fresh. Never do it when you are tired at the end of the day. Love your channel! Ing

Words of wisdom Andrew. Definitely a key element that you have. I was fortunate early in my working career to have mentors who always told me: I want you to better at this job/task than me. It could be as simple as taking the trash out. Positivity attracts positivity, take things to the next level, make things better, easier, and continuously improving with the mind set to allow it to happen if it makes sense and fits the long term goal. 👍🏻

I disagree with your comment stating that perhaps a sole proprietor might not need to be as aware of how the business is doing on a regular basis. I bet Joe at Ohio Woodburner is aware of on a regular basis how his business is doing. I think he employs a high school boy to stack, but NOT full time. He uses slave labor to do his videoing, so it is just him, a sole proprietor. A very good and helpful video. I enjoy your videos.

I agree. Joe is quite exceptional. I have just seen so many examples of guys that just bring a shoebox full of reciepts to a bookkeeper or accountant once a year and really have no clue about what's going on or how money flows in and out of there business. Really appreciate the comment.
