In blender, go to edit mode, hit 'A' to select every vert, go to mesh > clean up > merge by distance. or F3 and search merge by distance to merge all of the separate shells. That and Booleans can cut out MeshMixer from the equation totally. less steps is good!

Before I bought Bill's Fusion 360 course, I thought Fusion 360 was an Xbox console that had red ringed and didn't work anymore, lol... Not really. Bad jokes aside, I bought the course and immediately understood everything that Bill was teaching me. I have gone from not being able to get my views right to building all kinds of projects that I am now putting up on places like Thingiverse and Cults, and people are downloading what I designed! Honestly Bill, I can't thank you enough for giving the ability to learn this awesome new skill. I really hope that in the future you do more tutorials like this and pop them on your site. I would love to see a course on how to build helmets or even how to build swords and things like that. If you want to learn, grab the course over at punished props and learn from the master himself.

This is awesome!!! I only know how to use Blender to navigate through 3D sets for animation reference, but I will definitely look into your course to learn how to model things in Fusion! I have a question though: so you mentioned this could be used to scan torsos and other body parts. I guess this could be used to scan a person's body and make a dress form out of the scan? I don't know if there's a way to print such a large scan, or on what material (for dress forms it would have to be foam or a soft material that could take pins and needles going through it). I have a makers space with 3d printers and laser cutters for hire, so I guess I could ask there what they could do? So tl;dr: how would you go about 3D printing a big piece like a lifesize human torso or bust?
@punishedprops
@punishedprops Жыл бұрын
You could totally print a torso double for fitting costumes. You could also print your head for fitting helmets or sculpting prosthetics. Larger pieces, like a torso, could be cut into smaller chunks to print out and be assembled into a full sized torso.

Since iphone 12 pro / max and corresponding versions of ipads they introduced lidar on devices. There are multiple apps in istore that let you scan objects using lidar. Resolution is somewhat questionable but for basic forms / shapes is more than useful and you dont have to upload tons of photos you can directly upload file to desired file extension. For cleanup of models same tools can be used as mentioned here. However in Bill's example in blender after setting up scale / dimensions of the model in Blender you can use something called UW Unwrap thatbis used for texturing and with bit of modification you can get flattened out faces of model that can be used for patterns. Have in mind those will be for current model so if you want to accommodate material thickness increase size of the model x material thickness to get proper dimensions.

Great video, thanks! Your scanned mesh was off by a factor of 1000 because your Blender units and scaling incorrect. 3D Printing Professor has a good video on fixing this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ftd0oa-YmNWdh3k.html You calculated a factor of 1016 due to inaccurate measurement. Also, decimating in Meshmixer works well for me. Makers Muse has a good explanation of how to do it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pOCaZMplv9vagKc.html

Oh nooo! There are several other 3D scanning phone apps out there. Perhaps another will work for you.

So tools needed... a smartphone that costs more than an actual 3D Scanner. (None of the cheap smartphones that I know of can run that)

Polycam is an absolute scam! I was so excited to try scanning a unobtainable car part because of this video. Well 7 'failed' captures 7 lost 'credits' and no 3D object. To take any more photos I have to PAY & subscribe. You also have to PAY & subscribe if you want to export your files. So no, its not Free and it doesn't work. tried soft lighting and neutral background, all failed. Garbage!

Technically, photogrammetry isn't 3D scanning because there's no scanning. :) If you had an iPhone, you could have done this much quicker with actual 3D scanning, and it would be at 100% scale automatically. Uncle Jessy and Kamuii Cosplay both did videos demonstrating that method with an iPhone.

Right! The lidar scanning on my iPhone with PolyCam ends up rendering a much lower polycount model than the photo method, especially for smaller things. The lidar scanning is super fun for larger things like a whole room, but for detailed scans of smaller things I prefer the photo method.

@@punishedprops yes, the Lidar is low resolution, but apps that use the TrueDepth sensor like EM3D are higher resolution.
