I always take a kitchen paper without the heavy pattern. Many times it transfers to the watercolorpaper

That's a good idea! I must have got lucky (enough weight to smash it all out!). But un-pattered paper is definitely ideal 💪🏼🩷

A week? If you forget about it, you’re just asking for a molded/musty painting when you come back! A faster process is to iron the back of it really quickly on very low with an iron with the steam setting shut off, but with lightly spraying the painting just as you did here on the back. The reasoning for spraying over using the built in steam setting is to be working in a more controlled environment. I have a designated iron I bought specifically for this purpose that has never had water in it and never used on anything else as to not ruin it from anything else that my clothes iron has been exposed to.

I think it depends on the climate 🥰 I've not had an issue, but I do live somewhere that's drier so definitely has something to do with that. (Humid environments may struggle with this technique too). Thanks for your comment and suggestion.

Yes, pressure applied as you visually shown. Also ironing is a way to flatten after misting the back of the artwork. The best way to avoid buckling altogether is to stretch your paper (especially thinner paper) in the first place.

Oh ironing! That's a great tip! I've tried stretching but I'm sure I'm doing it wrong, I've never had much success 😅 Preventing warping altogether is always a good idea!

Yes, you mist the back of the art as you did then lay a cloth, I use an old pillow case and set the iron on cotton (high) and then iron the art. I also lay a piece of scrap paper on the table just in case which has happened rarely, the watercolor "bleeds". It also sets the colors to the cotton paper. Thank you for responding. But as I stated, stretching the paper first is best. Sorry, you have had difficulty doing this. But as I am sure you are aware, there are several tutorials on the internet.@@JenRaeArt

Great tip. Thanks. I’m wondering if, instead of a paper towel on the painted side of the paper, maybe use, parchment or wax paper or a piece of cartridge paper between the painted surface and the paper towel. Your example came our great but I’d be afraid that some paint might activate and be absorbed into the towel, or worse: the texture of the towel imprint on the painting. I’m kind of paranoid!
@JenRaeArt
@JenRaeArt 5 ай бұрын
@@ImeldaFagin That's definitely a valid suggestion! Another idea would be to seal paintings before doing this! Using some kind of spray sealant which I know some artists do! 💕 I've had no issues so far with the towel texture or activating paint (yet!). But I get the concern completely! I think cartridge paper is probably the best choice of your two suggestions. (My fear with wax paper is because it's non-absorbent, it might lead to water trickling down between any gaps between the painting and the paper if that makes sense?) Whereas at least cartridge paper would absorb a little. Definitely worth trying every different method to find what works, and experimenting with various techniques on test paintings! 🥰 Thank you so much for your comment!

Oh! Heat sets colour too? That's really helpful to know! I think I will keep trying to stretch the paper! The attempts I have made using online tutorials before have been okay, but I've often had to flatten paintings out at the end anyway so I'm wondering where I go wrong! Practice makes improvement! 💜@@mikelkirby2791

I love the painting. We had two Parson's JRTs, which never really kept still enough to photograph well, so I really wish I had had the talent and skill to capture them while they were alive. 😊. It’s good advice to stretch the paper before you work on it. You have to leave it taped to your board though and it’s fine for pre planned projects, but not always possible to do when working spontaneously. I've done a few paintings where the paper was stretched on a board, but it can be restrictive when wanting to turn the paper as you work. 😊

Thank you so much! That's really great advice! I think I need to practice my stretching technique. (Sometimes it still warps and I have to smooth it anyway) so I reckon I've got room to improve there! Thank you for your insight!

@@JenRaeArthi Jen, could it be that it only works with cotton paper? I tried it with cellulose 24 hours and first it was plain and after 5 minutes it warped again :-(
@JenRaeArt
@JenRaeArt 4 ай бұрын
@@emilyerdbeere9210 Oh that's strange! I've used this method on cellulose no problem. My gut instinct is that it wasn't quite dry yet. Sometimes it might take a few days to dry fully, depending on the climate.

I wonder if you can speed up the process by putting it in the oven?
@JenRaeArt
@JenRaeArt 4 ай бұрын
That is a very good question! I imagine at very low temperature, you might be able to! As long as everything is oven safe, it might be worth a try. (I.e. metal baking trays instead of chopping boards, stones or something similar instead of books). Definitely best to do on a tester painting. Someone else said that heating is good for fixing some paints, so that might be a good side effect! Otherwise, I'm not sure what might happen to the painting. Sometimes patience is good, but then again if you're in a hurry it might be an option!
