A lot of you might not realize that not all chemistry/physics classes in the world are as experiment based as your own might have been. I rarely if ever did experiments in my classes, we learned the stuff theoretically in numbers and formulas and had to imagine how it would work. So it's pretty neat to actually see sth like that. Stop shaming him for his lack off education if the education system might be the fault.

This trick doesn't work how people believe it does. Oxygen depletes during the burning of the candle but at the same time, the bottle fills up with CO2, so the vacuum effect does not come from fewer gas molecules since that number stays the same. However, as the candle goes out, the heated up air above the candle retracts while cooling down which sucks up water into the bottle. On the one with the alcohol: alcohol burns up with the candle really really fast which generates a lot of heat. That heat expands the gas inside the bottle so rapidly that it actually pushes water away from the bottle head to release itself out of the bottle (that's why it's spewing everywhere). Now there is less gas molecules in the bottle than before so in oder to equalize the pressure difference bottle/outside world water and air flow into the bottle

Explenation: When the alcohol is burned, the H2O and CO2 which are formed have a smaller volume then the oxygen and the alcohol. This creates a lower pressure in the bottle which causes the water to be sucked in.
