This is my kinda build project. No money, cheap as possible, but functional. Instead of sticker shock all at once price, build a carport first, sheath it over time and pour interior concrete slab later - spread out the cost over time.

Use a hi-lift jack or a cable/rope around the base of them strung over an old tire on a rim or just the rim and pull slowly with tractor or vehicle. The trick is to pull them straight up. Engine hoist works too. Pulley on a tripod too.

I love doing doing diy projects, and I've been building a custom carport for a bit now, had it done, was gonna do so little things to improve it, but had a crazy storm the other night and one of the 2 sections collapsed, do you have any tips or knowledge that may help out?
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I would use pressure treated wood, exterior lag structural screws, and galvanized hurricane straps. All these can be found at Home Depot or Lowe’s. If you don’t use exterior structural screws, it might hold for a while but will eventually rust and snap. Same with non treated wood, it will weather and become weak. The biggest tip might be the hurricane straps. This should reduce twisting. Also, what I don’t have on my carport are angle brackets. This might also reduce twisting. Hope this helps. Subscribe for more diy videos.

Thanks brotha! That helps tremendously and I looked at the damage from the storm, it actually snapped a single 2x4 in 3 different sections and hence why one part of the carport failed

Urgent! Hi and how are you doing today? Urgent! I need to make something like that for my big 5th wheel camper and am wondering how I make it like yours except twice as wide and three times as long and twice as tall cause my camper is 36 feet long and has two slide outs and is probably at most 13.5 feet tall but I have not measured the height yet. Any advice on what materials to buy and where to buy? I'm waiting for your reply. Thank you!
@CottoDIY
@CottoDIY Жыл бұрын
Something that tall you would need to hire a contractor or buy a 5th wheel camper metal carport. You would want 6x6x20 or 8x8x20 vertical timbers for starters. Honestly, I don’t think that’s a feasible diy project. All that weight, plus the roofing, I wouldn’t attempt that project without an engineer or contractor.

@@CottoDIY Yeah a metal RV or Pole Barn would be best but where do I buy or who sells 6x6x20 or 8x8x20 vertical timber? Also I have 3 big huge pine trees on my land that is straight in a row about at least 60 feet length so I could use them as one side and probably tie a 40 x 40 tarp and let it hang over/downward. @@kitt28 I don’t mind. The structure is solid. If you pull from the top of the post, there is some slight wiggle, but if you added a front and back brace, as the sides are braced, there would be even less wiggle. Or you could add some corner braces-also, having a roof installed would sure up the structure slot more but I haven’t gotten around to that.

You an insert them right into the ground except you would need to set them in concrete or that expanding post foam. Otherwise, I fear it wouldn’t be stable.

Still Iraise I perceive this to be doable only if the ground is relatively level and solid (or concrete/asphalt). I can picture some all terrain tires if you were to move this across dirt; however, if there was mud, I’d imagine the sheer weight would have the tire (or all the tires), sink. If I had a concrete slab I’d definitely at least attempt this. Maybe another you tuber could. Best of luck. Subscribe for more diy videos!

Hey, the load on these lag bolts indicate they should be able to withstand the weight; however, we don’t get snow here in North Carolina very much if at all so I could not say for sure. Definitely not with a tarp roof, that much I do know. My tarp roof gave way through the last hurricane so now I’m looking into a metal roof.
