A lot of concertina players I meet don't know how to fix a not working note on their concertinas. They shouldn't worry because it is easy! In this tutorial I show how I was taught to do it many years ago and still use the technique today. If you enjoyed this content please consider supporting my Patreon account / simonthoumire

Very helpful. Being a recent owner of a Lachenal duet concertina and very motivated to learn, I stumbled upon this problem. Many thanks, K

If anyone is wondering: the final tune is called the Poppy Leaf hornpipe :) Great tutorial and great playing, thanks for sharing!

This is exactly what I need! I just got a concertina and while learning it I realized one of the keys lingered when I pressed it so it didn't have the crisp sound I needed. Playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with a lingering B key is pretty pesky. Yeah, not the most unbelievably complicated song in the world but ya gotta learn somewhere!

Good instructions on getting a balky reed to sound. But what I want to know is: How did you do the black smoke scene change? Is there software that does that for you, or did you film a coil of black smoke and then just edit it in?

Hello Simon, great video, sadly not quite applicable to my situation. I recently bought an old German Concertina from the GDR (it was cheap and in good shape, and I’m just beginning) and one of the notes that played well originally has started to produce a ‘wobbly’ sound, as though the G its supposed to be is intermixed with some other note I’m too bad at music theory to identify. Now, the German concertina is a simple instrument and more similar to a harmonica than to that engineering marvel of your’s, but I can’t figure it out. Thanks to this video I managed to take mine apart and put it back together, but I have no idea what to do except clean the reeds, which I did. Where could the wobbly noise come from?

When removing the end screws I don't take them out fully - i.e. just loosen them and leave them in the ends. I think they're less likely to get muddled up this way. When you take the end off just be careful not to turn it over!

I don’t usually take them out either but I did when I started. Probably good to start this way and gain the confidence to leave them in.

Hi, could you help?- there’s a continuous note playing. I can see that the pad has turned around slightly. Could it be that the wire has bent that holds it?

Thank you that was illuminating, but still it takes a good bit bravery to open one of these things up if you're new to it..

Thanks. I don't know about the Dutch courage though....... Whether I should imbibe before or after hahaha. It is actually the breathing valve or whatever the thing is called, it is stuck open, going to look into it during the week. Thank you again sir.

I’ve got an issue with my new Anglo concertina, one of the buttons sticks slightly when I push it. If I fidget it for a moment it goes back into place. I haven’t opened my concertina yet because it seems intimidating seeing that I just bought it. Any ideas before I build up the courage to open it?

Sorry for delay. It's hard to know. I think you have to open it. It could be the spring. Go for it!

Open up one of the ends, find the leak in the bellows and glue a thin bit of leather over the leak.

@@simonthoumire1 That centralised button layout sure is in favor of the action mechanics, anglo becomes a challenge trying to accommodate more buttons. Nice playing.
