I so appreciate how detailed you are in the instructions. Forgive my post-COVID inability to figure out simple things, but if I am using a grosgrain ribbon with a patterned side and a plain side, when I overcast stitch it, should the patterned side be facing the outward-facing part of the cardigan, so when I fold it back, it will show on the inside - if that makes sense?

Thank you for watching. So, you always want right sides together. So, pattern side of ribbon to outside of sweater. 🎀

Hi Anastasia! I just bought a really interesting fuzzy sweater, its got a fringed turtleneck (no seam and crazy flares of fabric coming out of the neck) so it's a really cool sweater. It's a NEVstudio design sweater with a totally random pattern and even a big paracord type laced "Stitch" running down the right side just for looks. I'm really tempted to do this with it, but it was pretty expensive. It just doesn't go with many of my clothes but if it was a cardigan, I think I could match it with a white or grey T-shirt and skinny jeans and it would look really cool. Thoughts?

This sweater sounds amazing! I would totally give this a go. Maybe practice on a thrifted sweater first before you cut into that fantastic piece.

Why are the buttons on the right side for a women's sweater?

That is a great question. It goes back to women being dresses by helpers. During historical periods like the Renaissance and the Victorian Era, women’s clothing was often much more complicated and elaborate than men’s - think petticoats, corsets and bustles. But while rich men often dressed themselves, their female family members most likely had servants to help them put on their clothes, both out of luxury and necessity. To make it easier for servants to button up their employer’s dresses right, clothiers might have started sewing buttons on the opposite side. Eventually, as clothing became more and more mass-produced, women’s clothes kept being made with the buttons of the left, and the design became standard, Benjamin Radford wrote for Live Science in 2010.

I'd love to know if you can hand sew this. If so, what stitch would be recommended? This would be for stretchy polyester. Also, can you fold the ribbon in half over the raw edge like bias tape?

I would use a whip stitch & yes you can fold the ribbon like a bias tape.
