It really turned out lovely. I have an entry railing upon two short walls that go up to the ceiling...I have to do something like this on them. You have inspired me to go dark stain on the wood base and top and light paint on the post pegs. Nothing yuckier than that old 70's golden wood stain!!! Thank you!

I just did this to my stairs and it took me a few days, one day to get all the rugs nails and staples, one day wood filling and sanding and sanding and more sanding, 3 days or taping and staining and waiting 24 in between. All in all, I will never do it again but I love the results.

Beautifully done Jenni. I have my banister painted and am moving on to my stairs now. Can you recommend the brand of varnish you used to finish the steps please? That is the only item i'm currently missing and i'm don't think the paint would hold up without a varnish finish. I'm in Ireland if that will help eliminate any USA specific brands. Thank you.

I would recommend painting any woodwork or walls before staining the stairs. Perhaps it’s the brushes I use but I would be afraid of getting speckles of white paint on the newly stained steps; but you did a great job!
@patriciamckenzie6790
@patriciamckenzie6790 3 жыл бұрын
Then you'll have to tape off woodwork to stain and the go back and tape off stairs to paint. Its actually easier to paint over any 'accidental' stained woodwork. If concerned about getting paint on the stained stairs, just have to tape off and protect the stained stair treads before painting. Hope that makes sense 😉

Jenni, that staircase is beautiful. You’ve inspired me to try something similar on mine. I’m so excited. One question, I bought the staple gun but I do not have an air compressor, any suggestions?
@RootsWingsHome
@RootsWingsHome 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! You'll need an air compressor. BUT, you could also just use a manual staple gun - you aren't using that many staples, so just a simple hand powered one would work fine. If you are going to do other upholstery work, I would recommend getting an air compressor, if not it may be something to return. I can't wait to hear how your project goes!!

I have carpet in the hallway at the top of the stairs, so I tucked the carpet around the very top step and stapled it down, then just met the runner to it. Be sure to have long staples for this so it keeps your carpet secure. Hope that makes sense!

This is a great looking job! I am getting ready to do my stairs and was stressing over the cost of runners so this might work perfectly for me. Did you only use staples under the nose of the step or did you still need them in the back of the riser/where the step meets crease? Can you see the staple if its there? I am worried about the carpet being loose/wrinkled enough for me to trip as I have fallen down my super steep stairs several times so I want to make sure of everything first.
@RootsWingsHome
@RootsWingsHome 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Carla! I did have to put a few staples along the treads and risers as well, most of them just disappear into the carpet and you really don't notice them at all. I think these keep the runner nice and tight to the stairs and makes it NOT be a tripping hazard! I think the runner is even safer ON than OFF, I thought the steps were a bit slippery before I added the runner. I hope this helps! Good luck on your project!!

I watched this video and decides to do my stairs..let me tell you..it is a job..she let out some important information.. 1. The staple removal alone can take up to 2 -3 hours..depending o How many staples you have on your steps..it is a daunting task. Painfurl to the hands from holding the plyers. 2. The amount of dust will differ, if you can get away with just sand paper yay you..However the wear and tear on your steps may cause for an electric hand sander..and that will produce an abundance of dust. 3. Not sure why she title this 50.00 stair makeover...yeah NOPE..only if you have to buy the runner..but the materials only can run about 50.0p then comes the runner..which I decided not to do. All in a) it does make the home look differ and the sweat equity is very rewared.. Keep in mind start early in the day..Take kids and pets to family or friends house so you have no distraction. Lastly, be prepared for body pain... Good luck .

Why would you leave an unstained portion in the middle of the stair tread? It would have been just a little more work to finish them completely. You're making a LOT more work for yourself or somebody else down the road for no reason.

What a bummer! You may be able to use an opaque stain - like a gel stain - to stain them so you really wouldn't be able to tell what they are made of, but they would still have the "wood" look!
@patriciamckenzie6790
@patriciamckenzie6790 3 жыл бұрын
Only critique I foresee is that the entire tread should have been stained even if a runner or removable carpet treads are laid down. Long term, it will be difficult for a new owner to match up the existing stain therefore having to remove the old stain and redo the entire stairway if they choose not to carpet. 🤔😟

Why in the world would you not stain and finish the entire treads? If you needed access, you could have done every other step on one day, and then finish up the remaining steps the next day. Otherwise, very nice project, looks great.
