Easy DIY Tilt Vice For The Milling Machine

G'day everyone,
In this video I will be making a simple tilt vise. I originally needed it as a part of the toolmakers vice project. I had to hold the part at a 45 degree angle, and simply holding it in the big vise was not an option. I could have made a custom fixture for the job, or made a sine plate, but I had an old vise lying about and I thought that I could use it to make a DIY tilt vice.
This tilt vice is intended for light work and drilling, and it won't be replacing the need for a proper sine vice in those instances where it is absolutely necessary. But for those small projects where an angle needs to be cut, it will be perfect, especially for us home machinists on a tight budget.

Clamping on the 1-2-3 block is actually really clever. I tend to overcomplicated things unnecessarily, then end up getting stuck there until I see how different minds approach problems. Thanks for the idea and nice job repurposing the old vise. Curious to see what you'll need this for!

You're right Brandon and I'm like you. I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself to achieve tight tolerances which sometimes takes us on a long journey of multiple side projects. Watching other's approaches opens my eyes to doing things differently. ;) Gilles

Sine plates are nice to have but the vise you created should work just fine as you said for light work. Well done.

This is a great project. Agree with IM great idea using the 123 Block. I can't wait to get a Mill to expand the projects I am able to work on.

Good idea to get the job that you need to do done. It can also be used on other projects in the future.

Great idea! Doesn't ruin the donor vise! I have smaller vise mounted on an angle base. I use it all the time with the base so this is one less piece of equipment that I have to come up with, and store! Thanks for your time and sharing! 👍😎✌️

That's a great budget build. Drill vices cost pennies and it gives you a nice little project to turn them into something better. P.S. don't get rid of the hacksaw, it'll cost you loads to replace it with something to do the same job and it keeps you fit!

You did a good job. But you should fly cut the tilt vices base in the same perpendicular setup that you did to correct the front face milling. You will find that the base is not co-planar to the jaws or perpendicular to the jaws either. Mark

should use a machinist jack or a bolt in a 123 block to support the pokey part of the vise.

I really enjoy watching your content! Nice reuse of the old vice. One question: When will you replace your hacksaw with a proper cutoff saw (either circular or band?) :P Also I would love to see a shop tour of your shop. even if it's tiny and won't take many minutes or seconds to show, it could be part of another video :)

I rather enjoy him hacking off 4 inch long chunks off of some massive bar. Gives the popcorn time to finish and get it in a bowl, and the ice to have chilled the drink while I kick back and watch what ever he's going to make next... Maybe a gofundme for the hemingway powered hacksaw kit? :)

Hey mate what sizes of end mills do you use most often? I’m looking at buying a few end mills to learn milling on a Sieg mill I just bought but not sure which sizes to get or the flutes to start off with. Thanks

I mostly stick to 8-12mm endmills. Most of the ones I use are 10, the roughers are 12

I do most work in steel so I buy most with 4 flutes and have one or two endmills with 2 flutes for when I need to rough out aluminium

@@artisanmakes well, you COULD film everything you do, but then it'd be hard to get anything done! (Also if you're machining things for other people, of course some of that might not be things you can share publicly).
