The current method for dock starting takes time to learn, and I’m not very good at it. We want to fly longer and farther on a hydrofoil, but we also want an easier way to start it. We’ve tried a number of different starting techniques and contraptions and have arrived a foil launcher we like. In this video, we share our favorite dock start foil launcher, describe how to use it, and share the details of how to build it for less than $80. All of the items you need are listed below. Excellent stuff. I'm going to build this with a slight variation because it is currently too shallow at the end of my dock. I'm going to figure out a way to attach this to the front of a pontoon as well as to my dock so it can be moved back and forth. I have the bungee ready to setup but I can't use that yet this year because it's too shallow for the first time in several years. That's also why I'm messing around with all this because we can't get our wake boat in the lift. Thanks for all the tips.

Awesome project. I can’t wait to try this. I’ve always got my foil, but not always a friend with a boat. It looks so much easier than a normal dock start. Next time you are at the hardware store, just buy caps for the PVC so you don’t need the tape.

Great suggestion. The edges of the tee and caps are sharp enough to scratch so make sure they’re covered too. I have some minor scratches in my dwarfcraft … that board owes me nothing after 150+ hours of use! It’s still working great

@@WakeThief This seems like the perfect fit for the pool noodle hack. just cut to length and add a slit. slide the noodle onto the pipe. should be soft on the board, and able to get wet.

Great idea! I bought the materials today. Here is a photo of the one I already have. Mine has a 20 pound weight so the system is adjusted to be balanced. I use it off of my houseboat. I like your idea better, so will give it a try.

The run and jump method i saw on a “horque movie” video a few years ago. Thats the best way for sure. Great idea suspending board as the time i first saw it in the vid i mentioned, he had the tail of his board pinched under something just above the dock edge. This method y’all are doing is well thought out. I’m starting construction right away. Pate C

@@WakeThief I also don’t think it’s a bad idea to let it float a little lower like mid mast. I think that would give you a stronger faster running start for more glide and not the tendency for the foil to breach right away....just a thought and maybe I’m wrong on that

I thought the same James. We found it was easier to leap up to but needed more horizontal speed because you didn’t have as much vertical energy to steal and turn into horizontal energy because you weren’t as high in the air. That said, the sweet spot was not found so lower might actually be a bit better. With a bigger wing no doubt you could board lower because low speed lift will be higher.

I've heard one good idea for folks that can't drill into a dock from a friend on facebook who has a history of good ideas! “keep the pvc pipe going further in toward the dock and run two umbrella stands with short posts in them that you fill with water. Perhaps run 25mm pipe for the last part of the horizontal distance , 90 deg it and then run 32mm pipe vertical into the umbrella stands telescoping to make it slightly height adjustable. The idea is those sizes will fit inside each other.” I think this will work. Maybe attach entire setup to dock so you won’t sink it 😉

Running dock starts 1/5 with a proper wing (large enough for my weight), Bungee 100% with proper wing, and this new system probably 50% right now, but still getting used to it. I expect to get to 75%. It's really just easier (and more fun frankly) than setting up bungee. My neighbors probably also appreciate not hearing the winch run.

I am about to make a foil launcher for my floating swim platform. The one improvement would be to sand the sharp edges off the tops of the 2x4s, or attach rubber ladder guards on them.

Hey what’s up guys, well I made mine a little bit different. I used shorter pieces of 2x4 and mounted a sturdy L bracket on each one and then drilled 3, 1 5/8” holes on each one about 2 inches apart and inserted PVC couplings into them and that way I can take it to different docks and with just 4 screws I can mount them with the L brackets and then depending on the dock height I can use the different couplings to change the height of the rig making it pretty useful for most docks. Wow! That's so innovative! I really would like to try the "original" way of tossing the board into the water and starting from there. But if I don't find success in that, then i'll definitely check this out! Food for thought: What if there was a Foiling League? Where competitors would have to pump through a course, do freestyle competition, etc. So that we could see the brands and how they stack up to one another. Like a similar concept to NASCAR or F1 racing where the manufactures are trying to display their best products and pushing the edge of technology.

Great idea, Thomas! I'm trying to improve how I review foil products, and really rate their max pumping speed, glide distance from max pumping speed. I like the idea of a course, and a race. Very cool.

Thanks, Jonathan. So far it's been working great. Just went 8/8 yesterday afternoon, before missing one! I was only ever 1/5 dock starting. I highly recommend this. Make sure to put some tape on the PVC to avoid scratching the board though.

Super Cool! I just got a 7.0m Duotone Slick. My plan is to get the Axis 1150 or Moses 1100 after I get the basic non flight wing skills down. I plan to add a 80L ish wing board and a 20L ish foot foil soon. There are going to be plenty of no wind days this summer to get in some foot pump foiling. Cool thing is multiple lakes I go to have a public dock. I am thinking of adjusting your design so I can set up a portable launch. "maybe a clamp or weight 😊" It is going to be a fun summer! 🙂

Great system, yes this is a huge improvement ! On my side I will need to make three modifications: 1. I need the system to be able to modify the hight easily as the lake water level can change quite a bit where I am 2. Transportable so that I can take the system with me in a car. 3. Probably most difficult : I need to fix the system to a concrete dock (which is not mine) so I cannot drill holes in it... any suggestions on this is welcome.

Irwin! I think 1 and 2 are solvable. I heard an idea from a friend on facebook to incorporate the large umbrella stands (fill with water to give them weight once their in place. Incorporate two of them on either side of the PVC supports. I think it will work. Or bring a sandbag or two and make your 3/4" piece that goes into the wood much much longer (6ft) and place sandbag at the end to hold it down well.

For #3 I'm working on something too. If the dock is made of slabs, there's a small gap between each of them and you could wedge the ramp in if it features a thin sheet of metal. Then hammer a wooden wedge do secure it.

A floating raft will slip and slide around so please anchor. I’d say you need 8 ft of runway with a front wing like the 1150. Less for larger area wings and more for smaller area wings.

You need to ride one back or have a foil you can pump a long time. My current favorite foil can be pumped for about 600m so I can’t go further away than that or I need to borrow a neighbors dock to launch off of … or swim home :(

Beach starting a foil . thigh deep water. So, thinking the ladder version.... Cheap aluminium scaffold type lock-ladder. Couple of PVC woodtek planks. some sand bags. Good to go. Planks extended towards the “beach side” (run-up) of the ladder, with your concept mounted to the “sea side” of the ladder. Early learning stage for wing foiling,! Problem is...how to grab the wing on the way through! Or just luff hold thru the run up?

@@WakeThief I see he now starting with the wing-kite in 1 hand, so yeah... If the ladder run-up (in a strong wind) goes well, probably just luff the wing overhead. I’m specifically targeting new students, and a beach side method to finding a balance point for various foil sizes on various boards.

Made my own one of these last year, we've now fitted it onto a ladder platform so can be moved as we're on a very tidal harbour. I rotated the arms 90 degrees so they point up now, but it seems quite high. How high above the dock does the board sit on yours as I feel I have to jump up at the moment to land on the board which then results in a downward force. Cheers

It all depends on the height of the water relative to your dock. Ideally it would be great to have a dock about 2ft off the water and the board would be level with the dock!

I'm wondering about DIY spring clamps (easier to carry than an umbrella base). Also, I'm surprised how springy your PVC pipe is, I would have thought it would break. Cheers!

I’ve seen pieces of wood that extend back onto the dock with a rock on them as a means to non permanently attach it.

When your board is on the holder resting in the water is the tail end of the fuselage touching the dock for four and aft balance or is it completely free floating in the water on the holder?

Great question. It depends on the foil. Yesterday I was on a new foil that did touch. It's not a big deal provided there something soft between the rear wing and the dock.

Great idea! I made something similar thank to your inspiration, unfortunately, my big board is not only a pain to pump but also too heavy : the pvc broke and lost a piece on the port :'(. I need to make a small pumping board now ;) Do you have any recommendation for cheap and fast construction?

I am not a knowledgeable board maker, but I would say 3ft, 10L or less and stiff is key. I'm still loving this. Like it a lot more than regular dock starting. It's like training wheels for dock starting.

Thanks for the video....on a side note I notice you have the mast set forward quite a bit. Your opinion on how far to set the mast forward..perhaps on a previous video? I've been foiling for a season but can't seem to get rid of the rope. We just simply foil behind the pontoon using a 60ft wakeboard rope. I purchased the Infinity 99 this Spring and anxious to try it out weighing 205lb. Thanks!

The mast position really depends on a lot of things (fuse length, rear wing / front wing type, etc). My best advice is try it back, try it forward and see which one you prefer. I like even leg weight, and my back foot right where the board pivots during the pump, so this guides me towards the front of the track to get those two constraints right.

That's a pretty long rope - I'd try foiling closer to the boat on the first or second wake to start

How much distance is there between your rear foil and the dock when set up? I have a 5ft board so I’m thinking it will be a few inches closer to the dock then your smaller board. Thanks!

Michael! That's a super good point. My tiny board seems to be balanced with the rear wing right at the dock. If I had a bigger board, you'll need to have more distance of PVC from the dock. Great catch!

How deep does it need to be to dock start? At the end of my pier the depth is about 6 inches deeper than my mast is tall. I want to learn to do it, but not at the price of scratching my foil up a bunch of the bottom

I totally hear you. I suspect mine in front of my dock so it doesn't touch / scratch. I've now started the foil with the wing 10" under the water and 1" under the water (with rear wing in the air).

2 feet, but not a big deal as you can just make the PVC connections that are pointing inward a bit longer.

I could not resist to work on a slightly different build, however, the weight of the board + foil seems quick significant for small pipes to carry when I test outside of water. When the foil is in the water, is there a significant gain of weight ? My garage is not close to the lake and my bathtub not big enough to test... thanks

Hi Irwin. I think it will be a bit less because the front wing, fuselage and rear will all be displacing water and thus there will be buoyant force. I’d assume the board and foil is 12-17lb (depending on board and foil) considering this buoyant force.

@@WakeThief no, I am trying with what I have left from other projects. So I mix bigger pipes than 3/4' with smaller ones...yeah a bit messy. I will work eventually. Thank you for taking the time to answer. (3/4" does not exist in France/ Europe, it is slightly bigger, 3.2cm vs 3/4" = 1,18inch =2,99cm)

A size close should work provided pipe wall thickness is similar. It shouldn’t flex much at all. Maybe try bigger pipe?

My friend Wayne on Facebook said “keep the pvc pipe going further in toward the dock and run two umbrella stands with short posts in them that you fill with water. Perhaps run 25mm pipe for the last part of the horizontal distance , 90 deg it and then run 32mm pipe vertical into the umbrella stands telescoping to make it slightly height adjustable. The idea is those sizes will fit inside each other.” I think this will work. Maybe attach entire setup to dock so you won’t sink it 😉

Yes, but it depends on the wing. For a large area wing it will lift at low speeds. A couple of steps will be plenty. What’s your weight and front wing area?

Thanks! Just checked it out. With that foil and your weight you should be able to do this with no steps at all. Just swinging the foil out and leaping forward, landing onto it.

From safety point of view, I would 100% slip/ mis-jump and collect a 2x4... can the fuselage and rear wing sit back directly under the dock with the mast all most touching? 2 T's made from foam Pool Noodle fastened directly on the end of the dock would be much safer. I'm sure 3/4 pvc would be just about right to insert into a pool noodle for extra rigidity

Eric. Good points. I think all of this will work. I actually think I should've cut pool noodles in half and used those to support the board. Pool noodle between foil and dock makes sense, and yes, the rear wing and part of the fuse could go under my dock but my dock is too high off the water to permit that, but again, don't see why that won't work.

Please don’t run near front of track to avoid breaking board. I’d recommend somewhere in the middle. Location doesn’t matter too much. Just changes how much room you want in front of your front foot … and board angle a bit (because of the tray shape). It’s all about rider preference. Find it for yourself.
